Guns are regulated, why not pit bulls?

Well, October is pit bull awareness month - and I just stumbled across an article by Bob Confer of the Niagara Gazette, who has put into words some thoughts that have been swimming around in my head for awhile. What do you think - does he have a valid point, or not?

Great find Jake.

Confer makes an excellent argument. If a constitutional right can be regulated then a fetish for owning a dangerous animal demands regulation.

And I think Confer is dead on when he says the proportion of responsible/irresponsible gun owners and pit owners are inverses.

GREAT PIT BULL JUDICAL MOMENTS IN HISTORY:

Congratulations to Melissa Andrews who will be the first Forsyth County Dog Owner cited under the new County Dangerous Dog Law. Her two Pitties defeated her by escaping and killing her neighbor's 750lb horse:

Pit bulls attack, kill horse

Owner is the first cited under new rules

By Julie Arrington Staff Writerjuliearrington@forsythnews.com

POSTED:October 18, 2011 3:14 p.m.

A woman was cited last week after her pit bulls attacked and killed a horse in a northwestern Forsyth County pasture.

Melissa Andrews, age not provided, of 3620 Watson Road faces one count of failure to vaccinate and two counts of animal at large, authorities said.

And thanks to an ordinance the county commission passed last month, the dogs are now classified as dangerous animals, said Forsyth County Sheriff’s Lt. David Waters.

Among other conditions, Waters said the ordinance means Andrews will have to provide the county with proof of a $50,000 surety bond on each dog if she plans to keep them.

Confer has written about pit bulls in the past. He always makes an excellent argument.

Has any other type of dog ever killed a healthy, adult horse? I'm thinking no.

GREAT PIT BULL JUDICAL MOMENTS IN HISTORY:

2002 US District Court Judge William Alsup weighs in on PTSD "Stunt Pits" and landlords:

Issuing one of the first court verdicts to weigh a conflict between the right of a legally disabled person to keep a companion animal and the duty of landlords to protect tenants from dangerous dogs, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled on August 8, 2002 that the San Francisco landlord of Guy Lowe, 38, met the requirements of federal law and the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission by allowing legally disabled persons to keep small dogs, and that Lowe, whose claimed disability is severe depression, acted unreasonably in demanding to keep a pit bull terrier. "The potentially catastrophic consequences of a pit bull attack must be considered, even if the risk of that attack is remote," Judge Alsup wrote

Not to change the subject or hijack the thread, I agree pit bulls should be regulated. However, I just saw this clip in CA where a protester let his pit bull attack a reporter. http://www.breitbart.tv/occupyoakland-media-mayhem-continues-dog-bites-man-edition/

I've been watching clips of the protests all over the country, and have seen one in NY where there were several pit bulls with their owners in the mix. I was wondering when we'd be hearing about one of them attacking someone...

This is the quote that JS Johnson would like for us to see.

"Pitbulls are living things That the heavenly father put on this planet, like any other animal they are here to live not fight. they're not weapons you can use, or play things you can throw around and provoke, or tools you can use for your own advantage 'like money'. I think comparing a Pit bull to a gun is like comparing man to a crowbar, ( and about these supposably unprovoked attacks, we as humans do we run up and just punch someone out of the blue, NO)
AND the founder of dogsbite.org was the Pit bull really a pitbull' had the dog had a rabie shot she will never know and neither will we. For finals isn't man as equal as every breed of dog is"

JS, The Heavenly Father did not put pit bulls on the planet, the pit bull is the creation of man. This dog was created to participate in an activity that is so violent that it is a felony in all 50 states.

The gun does not do anything until someone loads it and pulls the trigger. The pit bull is a self starter. There is a quote about pit bulls, that they are like a hand grenade... and the dog has the pin.

It is difficult to take someone seriously when they drag out the "was the dog REALLY a pit bull?" nonsense.

Dogs that bite have a 10 day rabies confinement, so yes, we know if the dog had rabies.

It is unwise to deny the existance of unprovoked pit bull attacks, to the victims of unprovoked pit bull attacks. We just can't take you seriously.
