i don't usually blog human fatalities, i don't even follow them closely but early on, it was clear this tragedy was playing out differently in the media. the day after this story broke, people began sending me links to the facebook page of Dax's father, JEFF BORCHARDT, who was publicly grieving the loss of his child and raging against pit bulls.
The biology, make up and history of pitbulls will looked at and analyzed in a different way from here to the future....I do not wish harm to any existing family members(pitbulls), but once your pitbull is dead like my son, you can be sure I will do everything in my power to make sure this breed is bred out of existence....these pitbulls was not abused, mistreated, or harmed in ANY way....they are naturally wired(my god almighty and nature) to bite down on flesh and not let go...I always thought my little chiuawawa would be MURDERED by a pitbull. I never thought it would be our baby boy....I will have that picture seared in my head forever
i was busy looking for the babysitter SUSAN L IWICKI and i gave only a quick glance at his comments and his friends' replies. i was not particularly impressed with the comment about the chihuahua bait. this blog is dedicated to overthrowing the lackadaisical attitude towards the pit bull's insanely aggressive nature towards other animals. for people to accept this level of danger as normal, and then expect the rest of us to the accept the risk, is intolerable. but it wasn't too hard for me to overlook his insensitive comment, the man was grieving the loss of his child after all. then people started to send me emails highlighting the nutter replies and it was clear that the pit nutters and i do emphasize NUTTERS, would not let his comments slide. the self righteous pit nutters would not allow this father to vent his anger towards pit bulls on his own facebook page. here is a sampling of the comments.

The jaw dropping thing to me was the brazenness and inhumanity of the commenter "friends" on his facebook page. Not that I'd be in this position because i don't know anyone who would be on facebook during a tragedy, but if someone I knew railed against GSDs after a GSD killed their child, I would not even think of defending dogs to them even though I really like GSDs. And if someone else did defend GSDs to the grieving parent, I would be the first person to tell them to shut the hell up even though I am fond of the breed.
I really cannot fathom the utter depraved lack of humanity of those people.
No matter how little a person knows about the pit bull issue, they must know pit bulls are "controversial." If you know that some people believe pit bulls are too dangerous, even if you don't feel certain one way or another, why would you put your child near them? I just don't get that.
That said, the pit bull nutter advocacy is fucking dangerous. If your only experience with dogs is owning two little 15 lb. mutts, and you know people who tell you all about how great pit bulls and you SEE friendly pit bulls and you hear all the crap about "its how you raise them" and "nanny dog," I can understand how some people get taken in. The parents were not nutters, they were nutters once removed.
And I read three different people a neighbor, Jeff the father, and a friend all said that the pits had been raised by iwicki from puppies and that they always seemed well behaved and friendly.

ADRIAN, Mich. — The owner of two pit bull dogs that got loose and attacked animals in a petting zoo last fall was handed down a 15-day jail term Monday in Lenawee County District Court. But he was allowed to keep 17 dogs and puppies he currently has in his Cambridge Township home.
Ian Hensen, 31, was given an option of serving the 15 days in the Lenawee Development Corp. residential center in Adrian, allowing him to come and go to work each day. The sentence is to begin within a week, ordered Judge James E. Sheridan.

Unfortunately, Dawn, the victim's parents didn't had any reason to doubt the “good intent” of the baby sitter or to question her personality, since she also loves dogs. Both the victim's parents and the babysitter love dogs and that fact is a universal “pass of trust” among them. It shows how dangerous this whole matter has become and how obscured it is. If you love dogs you must be a good and trustworthy person but moreover it means that you are responsible person, so responsible that you can be trusted with child care.
They simply followed the general consensus, the dog mantra.
i think these things happen because people do the wrong things and they may even know they are doing a stupid thing but they just dont care. they do what they do and they have what they want and they may pay a terrible price but its often someone else who pays the price. this father said he was concerned for his dog but his child was taken instead . i think that tells you something .

I've said many times that when I started to study pit bull violence as a potential research topic in public health, I quickly became fascinated--and dismayed--by the phenomenon of pit nuttery. One aspect of this, which we see demonstrated in this article, is the shocking callousness displayed towards victims of pit bull violence. The victim-blaming and denial and dog-protecting is repulsive in the extreme and, as Snack wrote, utterly discourteous. The only comparable denial, shaming, and malice I've seen directed towards another group of people (as victims of pit bulls) is, perhaps, victims of rape and sexual assault.
...and I think that is very telling. Gives one a little insight into the personality and mindset of the nutters who do this.
Moving on: what a motley crew of degenerates we have here. The Pit Nutter Salute is a mystifying phenomenon. Anyone over the age of, say, 22 who would take and PUBLICLY POST photos of themselves flipping the bird needs to have their head examined (I'd give a pass to teens and young adults because I know how impulsive and reckless they can be). The pit nutter salute demonstrates idiocy ("It never occurred to me how this would look to my employer/potential significant other/grandma!"), childish unrefined defiance ("Fuck you, World!"), and vanity ("Look at me and this image I'm deliberately cultivating!"). Keeping out of legal trouble for five consecutive years may be very difficult for pitters.

dogs bred to be glorious gladiators in bloody life and death contests with other animals are perhaps going to be submissive with their owners , handlers , ect but why would they be safe around everyones children ? this is basic common sense that any dog might bite a child . a pitbull is bred to do more than bite.

Not to get distracted by Freya, but the point of dawns post is well taken...anyone can claim to be a "dog expert", and make totally fabricated claims about dogs that have an impact on public health and safety. In how many advanced industrialized countries besides the U.S. are children being regularly torn apart and killed by alleged domestic "pets", with no legislative reaction?
Look at BadRap...you have two artists with no previous experience with dogs, but who are talented self-promoters...they now make a handsome living from their non-profit group "advocating" for pit bulls. They are treated as national experts on the "breed", even though neither has any formal education in animal science, no actual credentials as dog trainers (have either Donna or Tim actually titled a dog in advanced obedience, herding, tracking, etc) ?
They make statements about the history of the breed that are total fabrications...that pit bulls were common family pets at the turn of the previous century, that they were "America's dog", that "children were entrusted to their care", that they were commonly used as "farm dogs". All lies.
They actively promote the dogs as great pets for children, and promote rescuing fight bust dogs and putting them in family homes with children. It's insane. Yet there is no authority to challenge them, and they are making money, so who cares how many little Daxtons end up dead?
I went to pick up some pet food today and the damn store was having a St. Pittie's Day party. There were no pits there yet, but I was really annoyed. I wanted to ask the rescue angels what they thought about the 6 deaths and many maulings so far this year, but they were MIA until noon. I was too early. I think I will go back to buying my food off the internet so I don't end up supporting pit grifters.
I'm always disgusted when I go to a news website to read all of the pit bull propaganda. Someone just lost their life, arms, pet, whatever, and the nutters are talking about their wonderful pets. They're afraid of losing the right to own a pit bull, but the rest of us are worried that we'll lose a loved one, a limb, a pet, or our lives. It takes a special kind of degenerate to go to a brutal story about a pit bull, and talk about how they're such great dogs.

Hi guys, totally unrelated to this post, but wanted to share my obedience trial brag from today.
The fearful Border Collie that I have many times spoken about here just finished his Utility obedience title (highest class), earning TWO qualifying scores in two trials today. The class is so difficult that it only has a 10% pass rate. So passing twice in the same day is a 1/100 chance...
He was 1st place both times, with scores in the 190's (out of 200). He'll be 11 years old in a couple of weeks, and was completely retired from competition for nearly 8 years, most of which I spent in Istanbul. Took him out of retirement a couple months ago, and look at him go!
My Papillon (AKA "pittie bait") got a 3rd place in Novice and finished his CD title. I had only entered him once today. He also got a score in the 190's.
No pits in sight...

Miss Margo, I forgot my camera, so don't have any video. Since Utility A only has a 10% qualifying rate, I figured we'd likely not pass either trial yesterday, and didn't want to be reminded of our mistakes! Having both qualified and gotten first at both trials, I'm now regretting this! Luckily, there was a show photographer, which is common at agility/conformation shows, but rare in obedience. He took a bunch of photos of both my dogs "in action" and I'll post a link when they're ready in a week or so.
orangedog, thanks for the link to the cool BC jewelry. I took a 9 mos. silver-smithing course while in Istanbul and can't make anything nearly that good. But I can now better appreciate the work that went into that beautiful piece!

Congratulations, SKY! I do find it interesting that there were no pit bulls at this competition; that's what I also hear from friends who compete in dog sports. Pit bulls are fairly rare in these venues....I am guessing that explosive dog aggression is a real deal breaker for people who want to compete in dog shows. Why spend all that time, money and energy training a dog, only to have it "turn on" at the age of two or three, and want to kill the other competators?

That's why I like to carry a heavy lead pipe to break up pit bull attacks. Clearly, a baseball bat often has no effect whatsoever on a pit bull in the zone, intent on torturing a victim to death, but on the other hand, it could result in a catastrophic redirect.
So heavy lead pipe it is, swung with as much gusto as you can muster. It's not a bad option for those who have the requisite level of strength and are unable for some reason to carry a gun or a knife.
well, i try and stay clear of any possibly dangerous dogs , not just shitbulls , but there are times when things are not avoidable . my dog may be taken at any time but it wont just be his blood on the sidewalk.
