there is no such thing as a dull moment when it comes to pit bulls and their owners. last week, yet another damaged and disenfranchised pit nutter made the headlines of bizarro world. and once again, we have the real world version of events to compare to the lunatic fringe's interpretation of the events. skooch over DARLA, you have company!

leave it to pit nutters to exploit someone's personal tragedy to advance the cause of gripping dogs. the recent suicide of NICK SANTINO and the "forced" euthanasia of SANTINO'S pit bull mix ROCCO, are being blamed on grumpy neighbors and the evils of breed specific legislation.

here's what we know from mainstream media's version of events, for unspecified reasons, a condo association tightened up their dog policy in 2010 (i bet $100 there is a scary elevator encounter with a pit bull). one of their new rules included a pit bull ban. SANTINO'S pit mix was grandfathered in but SANTINO was restricted from using the elevator and he could not leave the dog alone for more than 9 hours. reasonable restrictions for the safety and welfare of both ROCCO and the other residents. we also know that SANTINO was facing fines for barking and more importantly, SANTINO'S own vet reported that ROCCO was becoming "increasingly more aggressive". rather than move or place his best friend in a new home, the struggling actor had his dog euthanized, called an ex-girl friend, then took an overdose.

here is what the pit nutters report, BSL took two innocent lives. the mean grumpy neighbors harassed a 47 yr old man to the point where he killed his "healthy, friendly pit bull" and then killed himself.

reality check: healthy, well adjusted people do not take their supposedly "healthy and friendly" pit mix to the vet to be euthanized, then go home, call an ex-girl friend and kill themselves. i find a few of the details significant.

first, he killed himself ON his birthday.
second, it appears that he had a prescription for a drug with the ability to deliver a lethal dose. (possibly already taking something for depression or to help him sleep)
third, he called an EX girl friend (possibly yet another failure contributing to his decision to end his life)
fourth, on his facebook page, he stressed how ROCCO saved HIS life, not vice versa.
fifth, despite the fact that this orphan had earned an MBA and started his own business (apparently successful), he was not happy with his career and wanted to become an actor.
sixth, he was not just struggling to make it as an actor, according to the imdb, he was failing miserably. between 1995 and 2011, SANTINO landed 8 menial roles, including "club owner", and "butcher guy". his billings were nearly dead last.

THE PIT BULL EVANGELISTS

the title of C MARABITO'S insane blatherings this week: Two unnecessary deaths due to BSL. MARABITO claims the "down on his luck actor" succumbed to the pressure of the condo bullies. a neighbor with the last name of CLEARY (any relations?) is quoted "People were complaining about his dog. It was open season on him." the BOTTOM LINE for MARABITO, "this man lost his life and his dog due to breed specific legislation." the bottom line, i have a bridge i'd like to sell MARABITO and her gullible followers.

surprisingly, CINDY MARABITO lost to the competition on this one.

Micaela Myers at stubbydog.org, where they are "reinventing the pit bull" lead with this, "This past week, the tragic result was two deaths – one of a 47-year-old man and the second a healthy, friendly pit bull. "

i am fascinated by the amount of effort that went into describing the pit bull and how little mention there was of the other half of the double tragedy. all of the nutters seem to think that BSL and his grumpy neighbors pushed this man over the edge and prompted him to kill himself. healthy, well adjusted people first of all would not kill their healthy, well adjusted dog over this and certainly a healthy well adjusted person would not kill themselves over this. you don't need to be a Durkheim scholar or have a PhD in psychology to grasp this simple concept.

Micaela Myers ends her tribute to a down on your luck, depressed pit bull owner on this note "The sad story of Nick Santino and Rocco also illustrates the need for public awareness toward canine housing discrimination so that landlords and complex management can understand the consequences of their misguided policies." MICAELA feels this tragedy illustrates pibble's plight. not a single word about the need for suicide intervention or the 100 american people who succeed in taking their lives and the 800-2500 that attempt but fail to take their lives EVERY day in the united states. that tragedy pales in comparison to the plight of dangerous pit bulls.

Animal Farm Foundation will lead a peaceful vigil to remember Nick Santino, Rocco the "pit bull" dog, and all victims of canine discrimination. We are devastated by the inhumanity and injustice that Mr. Santino and Rocco experienced prior to their deaths.

Our goal for this vigil is to end the unnecessary, fear-based discrimination that some "pit bull" dogs and their owners face, particularly with regard to housing matters. We wish to empower community members with information and resources to replace fear with facts, and to advocate for equal treatment and opportunity for "pit bull" dogs and their owners.

Please meet at 4:00 pm at the Josie Robertson Plaza (at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts). We will march down West 64th Street past "One Lincoln Plaza," the building where Mr. Santino and Rocco lived.

interestingly, there is an old discussion on pitbull forum.com from 2010, when his battle with his grumpy neighbors and the meanies in the condo association first began. NICK'S predicament didn't garner much sympathy.

Pit Bull Service Dogs: They're too sensitive but they still need prong collars

The recent near-fatal mauling of Joe Finley in Chicago revealed a great deal about who runs Chicago Animal Care and Control and how it operates.

Finley's brutal attack left him without a foot or the use of his arm. In response, the CACC and the city attorney's office did exactly nothing to prosecute the irresponsible owner that let his dogs, which were known to be aggressive, run at large. Local residents and aldermen were appalled and wanted action to ensure public safety. When Alderman Fioretti raised the question of a pit bull ban, the obligatory pit bull service dog handler was trotted out to state he was afraid that his pit bull service dog would be taken away if BSL were enacted in Chicago. The service dog handler in this case was Chris Maddeford and the service dog is in fact a service dog in training from Kelly and Greg Yearwood's non-profit called Pits for Patriots which was started up less than a year ago. They started with four pit bulls and two of those washed out - one for health and one for temperament reasons.

The remaining two pit bull service dogs in training wearing prong collars.

Pits for Patriots cites as their inspiration two "successful" pit bull service dog organizations, one in New York, and one in Tampa Bay, Florida. More about that later.

News updates have come out in which Finley describes his horrific attack at length. Though he gave up on his foot long before he was finally rescued, he never lost consciousness and he never quit fighting to keep them from getting his neck.

"Finley says he wants to run again, a hobby he took up just 10 years ago. Finley says he also wants to work on erasing the mental image of the attacks. He says he replays it over and over in his head. He will be discharged from Stroger Hospital and transferred to an in-patient rehab facility in the Chicago area."

"Trauma surgeons at Stroger say during the first few days of recovery they were not sure if Finley was going to survive. One doctor describes Finley's injures as equivalent to stepping on a landmine. Doctors credit Finley's incredible physical and mental strength for his survival."

Peggy Sue Leifer left this comment on the CBS local news update:

Peggy Sue Leifer is Snicker's fur mommy. Notice she's not sending good wishes directly to Finley, she's addressing her old pal Steve Miller, the WBBM reporter who interviewed her a few weeks earlier about bringing a pit bull to Aurelia, Iowa which has a pit bull ban.

Isn't it sweet and thoughtful that she bids Miller to send the man who just nearly was killed by pit bulls the good wishes from Snickers the pit bull, too?

Peggy Sue Leifer is the wife of ex-marine, retired Chicago cop, and stroke survivor Jim Sak. They lived in Chicago until the end of 2011 when they moved to Leifer's hometown of Aurelia Iowa. The city of Aurelia had recently enacted a ban on pit bulls in response to specific public safety problems the city was facing with regards to pit bull attacks.

The city of Aurelia, IA, responding to a petition from residents, enforced the pit bull ban it has had on the books since 2008. The pit bull in question is none other than Snickers, Sak and Leifer's pit bull which they allege is Sak's service dog. And now Sak and Leifer are suing the city of Aurelia with monetary and other support from Animal Farm Foundation, a pit bull ownership advocacy group.

Two separate advocacy groups have responded to this story, pit bull advocates and advocates for equal rights for people with disabilities.

1. Pit bull ownership advocates feel that though there is no constitutional right to own a pet dog, they must be guaranteed the freedom to own a type of dog that has killed more people than all other kinds of dogs combined in recent years, no matter the effect on the community, and with no concomitant responsibility. And they frequently and publicly wish ill will and harm to anyone who disagrees with them.

2. Advocates for people with disabilities have successfully lobbied to protect and assert their constitutional rights, freedoms and access guaranteed all US citizens.

Take a guess: which group members do you suppose have taken to the internet comments sections and participated in a collective hysterical hissy fit condemning an entire town and which group members have participated in educated, reasoned and nuanced discussions about freedom, rights and responsibility?

Commenters on the public boards on Service Dog Central:

Kirsten says: The letter of the law is REASONABLE accommodation, not any and all accommodation without having to ask for it. In the case where dogs in general are allowed in a community, reasonable accommodation assumes no special request for accommodation is necessary. But when we look at places such as housing, the accommodation must be requested. So I think they could make a case that this is a reasonable accommodation to take into account the community's right to self govern and protect their citizens AND the PWD's right to have a SD. A compromise. Reasonableness loves a compromise. Not budging is very likely to land them with a very broad "any pitbull claimed as a service dog, without proof, is allowed" and that's going to be a huge mess.

You can immediately see that pit bull advocates view freedom as "I should be able to do anything I want." Kirsten and the other commenters on the Service Dog Central forum, who have had to be vigilant and pro-active about asserting and protecting their equality and rights, have a much more sophisticated and reasonable understanding of freedom.

And the people at SDC also realize that just because Mr. Sak has a disability and claims his dog is a service dog, that doesn't necessarily make it so. The Bronk v Ineichen suit demonstrates that people with a disability who own a dog, but can't demonstrate that the dog meets the standards of service dog training cannot claim the dog to be a service dog. Moreover, by following the discussion in the SDC Aurelia thread, it is clear that advanced obedience training, as well as individually trained tasks, is a requirement for a sufficiently trained service dog. It is assumed that a genuine service dog would have both the training and temperament that would make it safe in any public area.

There are a number of reasons to suspect that this dog is a genuinely beloved pet, but not an adequately trained service dog.

The description of individually trained tasks listed by the physical therapist, the Animal Farm Foundation and the motion for preliminary injuctions all consistently name the same three individually trained tasks - "walking, balance, and retrieving items around the house."

Sak and his wife describe, at various times, completely different tasks than those mentioned by the physical therapist, lawyers and pit bull advocacy group; they do not mention the "retrieving items" task at all; and they contradict each other as well as the legal documents submitted in the suit. Sak says that the dog is specifically trained to regard a hand tremor as a signal to sit and wait for a command which is usually go get his wife so she can help him back up after a fall. But, Peggy Sue Leifer, his wife, says, "I have a very hard time getting Jim back to his feet, but he and Snickers have it worked out."

Sometimes, Snickers' trained task is described as dragging Saks to the wall or furniture so he can pull himself up and other times Snickers is described as being trained to stand so Saks can pull himself up by pulling on Snickers collar.

Snickers seems to be an unlikely candidate for a balance and support service dog for a grown man because he is simply not large enough to do the job. The Service Dog Project breeds and trains Great Danes as balance and support service dogs. The SDP states, "The Balance support dog should be at least 40% of the person’s height. A 6-foot tall man needs a 30” dog. This puts stability at the person’s fingertips. The dog should also weigh at least half the person’s weight." They also outline the long training period for the dogs and go into detail about how the handlers are trained to pull themselves up in a specific way so as to not injure the dog.

Snickers was supposedly trained, in the event of a fall, to drag Sak to furniture to allow him to pull himself up. Sak grabs Snicker's collar for this purpose. But, as SDC members note, this would be injurious to Snickers. Evidently, Sak did not consult any service dog information at all because the most cursory search on the internet suggests that Snickers should be fitted with a harness to safely accomplish this task.

Sak provided a letter from his physical therapist to the city council that states she "was involved in" and "supervised" therapy sessions that included Snickers. She stops short of stating she helped train the dog and she was apparently unaware of several of the quite physical tasks that Snickers had been trained to do - dragging Sak, allowing Sak to pull himself upright by pulling on him and, alerting Leifer of a fall. (See attachments at the end of the document)

If the dog is self-trained, evidence of the number of hours this dog was trained first in obedience training to an advanced level and then in individual training for specific tasks to aid his handler should be available to the judge because though it is permissible to train a service dog one's self, the owner must still put the same amount of training on the dog.

The International Association of Assistance Dog Partners has advocated for responsible service dog partnerships for 80 years. They maintain that trainers function as ambassadors for the assistance dog movement. The IAADP believes that "assistance dogs have worked successfully in public and won the public's acceptance by achieving high behavioral and training standards which set them apart from pets and other animals. Their exemplary conduct led to state legislatures granting access rights to the blind, deaf and mobility impaired. Those early teams paved the way for the Americans With Disabilities Act, which has opened the door to individuals with a wide range of physical and mental impairments being able to have access rights."

Their suggested minimum training best practice standards include a minimum of 120 hours of training logged over a period of at least 6 months.

People focus on the "individually trained tasks" that are required for a dog to qualify as a service dog, but it must be stressed that a service dog also required to be very well obedience trained and be obedient in all public situations they are exposed to. It is significant that in the motion for a preliminary injunction, Sak and Leifer stipulated that they would not take Snickers in public. One could suspect that Sak had no desire to take Snickers out in public if the dog's behavior might betray the fact that he is not highly trained to be obedient in public places.

Please note the "trainer's responsibilities" section on the same IAADP page. The first responsibility is to "know pertinent canine laws." As a former CPD tactical officer who worked in a city that banned handguns, Officer Sak's duty was to enforce a handgun ban no matter his personal views on the issue and he, more than anyone, is aware that the law applied to everyone, even those who professed ignorance of the local ban and who were otherwise responsible with handguns.

However, he and his wife used this very excuse to explain why they brought a pit bull to a town with a pit bull ban. It is highly doubtful they were ignorant of pit bull bans in general or that owning a pit bull mix would potentially subject them to bans if they moved. And it stretches credulity to think that they were unaware of the ban in Aurelia given Leifer's affiliation with Cynthia Bathurst of Best Friends Animal Society and Safe Humane Chicago. Both organizations strongly advocate for pit bulls and against pit bull bans and work closely with the Chicago Police Department about dogfighting and other pit bull issues.

Much as been made by pit bull advocate groups of the horror of having one's service dog and pet taken away. No mention whatsoever has been made about adults taking responsibility for their choices. The first choice made was to get the pit bull mix knowing that having a kind of dog often subject to breed bans would restrict their freedom of movement with the dog - whether they agreed with the bans or not. Their second choice was to attempt to make their pit bull pet into a service dog by registering it with NSAR, a scam registry, instead of looking at one of the many organizations that offer free training for veteran owners who want to train their own dog or make available genuine, trained service dogs to veterans at no cost through private donations and a federally funded pilot program through the VA:

Yet another organization, Pit Bulls 4 Patriots, was founded with the intention of training rescued pit bulls as service dogs for veterans with PTSD. The newly minted Chicago-based Pits for Patriots claims they were inspired by this Florida organization. The history of this organization provides yet another reason to be skeptical of pit bulls paraded as service dogs.

Pit Bulls 4 Patriots had to abandon their original concept but the dedicated founders transformed the program into Hounds 4 Heros, a program that uses rescued greyhounds instead. Why? The pit bulls were not working out as service dogs. They took too long to train, and they found that pit bulls were too "sensitive" to work with handlers with PTSD because they "reflected" the symptoms of their handler's PTSD. Evidently, the pit bulls were exhibiting common symptoms of PTSD: anger, irritability, hypervigilance, and anxiety. Irritable pit bull service dogs. No Thank You.

"We became clear that we need dogs who are able to provide calm in any situation rather than matching the handler's feelings. Also, it is critical that PTSD service dogs can adapt and recover quickly from stress, and to be resiliant enough to do that again and again"

In addition, the wonderful pit bull "washouts" could not be easily adopted so the founders of the organization are now the proud owners of a boatload of pits. Rescue pit bulls, it seems, are not inherently (genetically), suited to service dog work.

It seems that greyhounds possess inherent (genetic) characteristics that pit bulls do not:

"In our search for the "perfect" PTSD service dog, we are very excited to have Murray join us. Greyhounds tend to be calm, loving but not pushy, caring but not overly sensitive, and are happy to relax and go wherever their person needs them to be."

Pit bull service dogs that end up in the news have almost always turned out to be scams, sometimes disastrous ones. Robert Weller even got a ban exemption in Denver for his supposed service dog. It bit him many times and the last time it wouldn't let go.

That is not stopping AFF from launching their own rescue pit bull stunt service dog training program. They are going at it the right way, too. They are basically putting out a nationwide call for appropriate pit bulls that they will evidently transport to the Farm at their own cost. But the best news is they now believe that anyone can identify a pit bull, because they will accept any dog that was identified by anyone at intake as a pit bull for the program!

They undoubtedly will be able to come up with a few pit bulls with the temperament of a labrador retriever, which is basically what they're looking for, by casting such a wide net. But it is nothing more than another stunt, just like the failed Lawdogs experiment.

This lawsuit in Aurelia IA, is another stunt by the monied AFF. They are turning a grown man, a marine, into a victim to suit their agenda and they are scapegoating an entire city. Aurelia is not taking it lying down. These people love their city very much and they very articulately describe their home town and the goodness of the people in it.

Excerpts from a letter to the editor by an Aurelia citizen who's a former Marine:

After reading people's comments on Facebook and other media outlets, such as "I Hope the people of Aurelia burn in Hell and are eaten by pit bulls," and other people insulting family members of the city council, I am for sure embarrassed.

I am hearing many people assault the city council members, who were simply trying to do their job and enforce an existing law after they were petitioned to do so. They have even been called unpatriotic by some. As a veteran, I will say that this is a legal issue and the subject being a veteran has nothing to do with the conflict at center.

For those of you throwing mud at the council, insulting them behind their backs in the name of patriotism, and claiming to be ashamed of Aurelia, you need to know that veterans are not victims, they are strong individuals, and to consider one a victim is an insult to those left on the battle field.

Excerpts from a Chronicle Times editorial the next day:

The national vitriol being aimed at the City of Aurelia for enforcing a City Ordinance banning pit bulls in the town is unfair, unjust, unduly harsh, and simply doesn't relate to the type of wonderful people who call that community "home."

Acting upon a citizen petition calling for enforcement of the pit bull ban, the City Council, paying heed to its constituency, earlier this month voted 3-2 to uphold the ban that resulted in a pit bull mix banned from the City limits.

After checking around, we found that having a pit bull as a "service dog" is extremely rare, if any others exist at all.

We do not know what the City of Aurelia plans on doing about the pit bull ban enforcement, or if it will recant its actions, amend the ordinance, and legally allow the man to have his "service dog" returned to him.

According to reports, the man is suing the City of Aurelia in an effort to get his dog back. Aurelia has a local attorney in the case, and the man also has an attorney paid by a national animal rights group.

Apparently, it all may be played out in a court of law.

Without getting into all the gory details, pit bull bans are on many city's books for a reason. For Aurelia, or any other city to roll the dice, run scared, and turn 'em all loose on an unsuspecting public because of the special circumstances surrounding this case is hazardous and possibly fatal folly.

Sak and Leifer have won a preliminary injunction to keep Snickers until their lawsuit against the City has been decided. It has been reported that they are asking that a judge find that Aurelia's ordinance is in violation of the ADA and unenforceable and that Sak and Leifer are seeking damages from the city. That will show them and any other city what they'll get if they try to do their duty and exercise home rule principles to protect their citizens.

Hopefully, Aurelia will keep up the good fight. No one wants to see another Johnston City, IL tragedy. Johnston City is a disastrous example of what can happen when communities are denied their right to home rule by laws crafted only to protect pit bull advocates.

What I gather from this post is...

1. Jessie says that the only reason pit bulls attack is because it is "canine instinct" or their owners raised them that way.
2. Assuming that pit bulls are just like any other dog, other dogs will only attack because of "canine instinct" or their owners raised them that way.
3. Jessie's "Maltese poodle" has bitten and/or attacked at least one person.

The Animal Farm Foundation Propaganda Machine in Action: There's no such thing as bait dogs!

The Animal Farm Foundation has now decreed that no longer shall minions speak of "bait dogs."

Once upon a time before pit bull rescues got $18,000 for each Vick pit bull they rehabilitated, it was considered unethical to speculate that a pit bull rescue might have been a bait dog when the rescuer really had no such knowledge, because that would by lying. That ethical reason has been abandoned long ago.

And though I don't believe AFF has participated directly in promoting scarred pit bulls as bait dogs, they have been silent on the subject since it became all the rage to adopt fight bust dogs into people's homes. In the world of pit bull rescue, there were only fighting dogs and bait dogs - all pit bulls. No losers and no bait dogs of other breeds or cats either. Ergo, Any pit bull that had scars, worn teeth, no ears, and cowered when taken away from the chain set in grew up on must be the victim bait dog.

And the reason to stop calling pit bulls bait dogs is not to get back to ethics - ie not lying. No, the reasons to stop are:

1. '"bait dogs" are mostly an urban legend.'
2. "you demonize" the fighting dogs that merely have the love deep down inside to rip other dogs to shreds. (paraphrasing)

The responses start out with the propaganda gulpers saying "you've changed me through education." (seriously) One supports the claim by asserting that the HSUS created the bait dog myth in its dogfighting campaign which is what caused rampant dogfighting in the first place.

But soon people arrived who lost their shit over the fact that AFF called bait dogs an urban legend. When challenged, AFF said, read carefully, we only said only "MOSTLY an urban legend."

Have no doubt, though, the minions will fall in line and pretty soon we'll be reading all over the internet how bait dogs are an urban legend.

This is the first step in quashing the whole subject of dogfighiting so the AFF and BFAS can go on squeezing money out of fight bust dogs and adopting them out to our neighbors. Pretty soon, they will all just be victims of abuse and no one should speak the DF word which is an urban legend anyway.

ZUPF'S BACK!! apparently i've been asleep at the switch, he's been back for a few months. zupf re-emerged on the youtube scene with one of my favorite subjects, DARLA NAPORA.

i think about DARLA often. the events after DARLA'S death are truly beyond comprehension. from C MARABITO'S desperate yet ever popular ladder theory to DONNA REYNOLDS' shameful eulogy to GREG NAPORA burying his wife with the cremated remains of her murderer and all with the blessing of her family, the events read like a rod serling meets william s burroughs novel. surreal and mind bending are an understatement. vintage says it best, "you can't make this stuff up!"

the hardest piece of this macabre puzzle to understand are GREG'S actions. i almost never speculate on the details of these attacks but GREG left me with a bitter SCOTT PETERSON like taste in my mouth. (why the nutters went to such lengths to fabricate the ladder theory with this fodder at their fingertips is a mystery in itself) his behavior is so far outside of the norm that i keep circling back to the possibility that he was directly involved – until now. i have been reading a book about disinformation and it has helped shed some light on GREG'S mystifying behavior.

take the case of UFO nutter, Marian Keech. KEECH claimed to receive messages from aliens warning her that the earth would be destroyed by flood. The aliens gave instructions for an evacuation plan for KEECH and her followers at midnight on December 21, 1954. KEECH and her followers (who had quit their jobs, left their spouses and sold their possessions) gathered for their outer space exodus at the preordained time. the space ship never arrived and the end time came and went without incident. at 4:45 am KEECH informed her followers that she received a new message: the aliens have spared the earth.

and now the story of the UFO cult gets interesting.

after KEECH announced to the cult members that the aliens decided to spare the earth, only one of KEECH'S followers got up and left. the remaining members were described as jubilant and the remaining members became even more committed to the cause. they began to proselytize in an attempt to convert others.

social psychologist Leon Festinger infiltrated the UFO cult and wrote a book about it. according to Festinger, it is psychologically painful to be confronted with information that contradicts our beliefs. it would have been too embarrassing for KEECH'S followers to admit they were wrong, so they set out to convince others to join their cult. if they succeeded at convincing others, they would not only avoid embarrassment, the conversion of others would constitute more evidence of their nutty UFO beliefs.

the lengths that humans will go to avoid admitting they are wrong are greater than i ever imagined possible.

lithonia, georgia on march 9th, VAUGHN's 2 dogs, an amstaff and a "mixed breed" got loose and attacked an 8 yr old girl playing in her yard. one of the dogs was shot by police responding to the 911 call. the other dog ran home and was later picked up by animal control. earlier it was reported that VAUGHN called the victim's family to express remore, apologize and offer prayers. but oddly, there was no mention of medical reimbursements.

of course the neighbors all gathered around the news crews to report that the dogs have a history of roaming, chasing, menacing, biting people and killing cats. 8 yr old erin ingram is still in critical condition and VAUGHN is only facing a misdemeanor charge.

this is a disgrace.

a friend sent me this fun link. this clever little website draws a picture to try and match the words that you enter. for example, if you type in "righthaven" you get the malevolent internet troll. given my obsession with pit bulls, i immediately started to plug in pit bull related words. type in "MICHAEL VICK" and surprisingly you get a football player, not a dog fighter or any one of the many drawings of VICK being bitten or urinated on by a pit bull. and if you type in "pit nutter" you get a Buster Brown comic. the results were interesting, here are a few of my favorites.

first up, Ms NCRC. since DELISE packages herself as a "researcher", you would expect to see a scientist, college professor or some geek in glasses and a lab coat. but when i typed in "Karen Delise", the google artist didn't produce a drawing of a vet tech or the director of research. instead i got an APBT advocacy logo. even google recognizes DELISE for what she is, a pit bull advocate.

next up, DONNA REYNOLDS. this one caught me off guard. i was expecting a pot head or a bottle of tequila or a flakey artist. nope, google apparently knows better than i. DONNA REYNOLDS resulted in a certificate of death. ISYN.

war, physical conditions and consumer products have all followed a similar path and the evolution of the pit dog is no different. pit bull advocates have been utilizing the magic of slick public relations gurus to try and improve their gripping dog's image. the ultimate canine gladiator has had many aliases over the years, some failed out right, some stuck. but even the most clever ad campaigns and name changes can't mask the gripping dog's savage history, try as the nutter might: fighting dog, pit dog, pit bulldog, bulldog, pit bull terrier, bull and terrier, half and half, bull terrier, american pit bull terrier, american staffordshire terrier, yankee terrier, new yorkie, st francis terrier, pittie, pibble, wiggle butt, working dog (pit bulls were created for the purpose of fighting and technically fighting is a job, so yeah, i guess they are technically working dogs), farm dogs (actually bulldogs were farm dogs, so technically, yeah pit bulls were farm dogs), just dogs, america's dog* and of course the nanny dog.
the most popular moniker today seems to be lab mix. and this one appears to not only be sticking but it is casting quite a shadow on the truth.

Holiday Season Pit Nutter Expose: Robert Shapiro's Social Tees Animal Rescue

Hello! It’s an honor and a privilege to be a guest contributor here at Craven Desires.

Recently, local media (New York City) has documented http://www.dnainfo.com/20111121/lower-east-side-east-village/east-village-pit-bull-attacks-raise-questions two attacks by vicious pit bulls in my neighborhood, the East Village. In one attack, a pug-shih-tzu mix named Mack Daddy was being walked by his owner, Laurie Foley. They passed a pit bull (Mr. Bean) being walked by its owner. True to form, the pit bull seized poor little Mack Daddy in its jaws and wouldn’t let go. Mayhem ensued. You can imagine the shrieks, the panic, the crowds gathering to watch. The “incident” lasted fifteen minutes until a neighbor emerged from his apartment with a metal bar and used it to PRY the pit bull’s mouth open. Yes, it took a metal bar and several broken teeth to stop the pit bull from its task. Amazingly, Mack Daddy survived the horrific assault.

On Oct 23, a 15 year old Shepherd mix was playing at the local dog park in Tompkins Square Park when it was brutally savaged by a pit bull. The Shepherd mix was badly injured, with vet bills between $2,000-$4,000.

BOTH of these pit bulls come from SOCIAL TEES ANIMAL RESCUE, a no-kill shelter run by ROBERT SHAPIRO.

Shapiro adopted out the pit bull that attacked Mack Daddy a year ago. Speaking about the pit bull, Shapiro says, “It is a very sweet dog, but it shouldn’t be out without a muzzle on.” Yes, friends and neighbors, you read that correctly! Mr. Shapiro believes that dogs who are so dangerous that they cannot be allowed in public without muzzles on can, nonetheless, be “very sweet.” I am amazed that his head does not explode from cognitive dissonance.

The pit bull that attacked the Shepherd mix in the dog park was being fostered by a woman who refused to pay for the victim’s vet bills. Shapiro also refused to take any responsibility for the attack, even though the pit bull came from his shelter. He says that people who foster his animals sign paperwork in which they assume all responsibility for the animal in their care. Basically, Shapiro says, IT’S NOT MY PROBLEM!

SHAPIRO and Social Tees Animal Rescue were in the news this Fall after a number of pit bull attacks on other dogs in Tompkins Park dog run. At least one of the pit bulls came from Social Tees.

Shapiro says that he tells people not to bring pit bulls to the dog park. He also claims that he is the “fall guy,” and that he adopts out 10 pit bulls out of 1,000 animals per year. Well, friends and neighbors, I’m here to tell you that that claim is demonstrably false (total bullshit). I live in the same neighborhood as Social Tees. I pass by Social Tees on my way to the train station, and I have been inside Social Tees several times and have spoken with Shapiro and staff members on multiple occasions. I’ve seen the dogs with my own eyes.

Pit bulls are not a minority of dog adoptees at Social Tees. Most of the dogs at Shapiro’s shelter are pit bulls or pit mixes, and as you will see, my research shows that Robert Shapiro is an unapologetic pit bull enthusiast.

The man is entitled to his preference in breeds, of course. But he knows about pit bulls and their propensity for aggression. He adopts out pit bulls that “shouldn’t be out without a muzzle on.” He does same-day adoptions of pit bulls and releases pits to foster homes with the results you see in the media reports. The last time I was in Social Tees, they were trying to arrange transportation for two male pit bulls being adopted by a woman who lived in an outer borough (can’t take em on the subway—thank God!).

Another time, I was walking down 4th St. outside of Social Tees and encountered a Social Tees pit bull snarling and lunging at the leash to get at three tiny white toy poodles. The lady with the (leashed) poodles was trying to get around the pit bull. She’d stepped into the street and held her dogs close. She looked scared to death. The pit bull was forcibly dragged, barking and snarling, down the steps and into Social Tees.

So, let’s take a look at Robert Shapiro, “I only adopt 10 pit bulls out of 1000 animals per year.”

According to the people at American Bully World, Social Tees is “The #1 Bully and Animal Rescue on the East Coast!!!!”

IT'S A BLESSING THAT ROBERT SHAPIRO RUN'S SOCIAL TEES BULLY AND ANIMAL RESCUE ON THE EAST COAST. ROBERT IS THE REAL MCOY AND HAS BEEN ONE OF THE ONLY LIFE LINES FOR OUR BREED FOR THE PAST TWO DECADES. HE'S A TRUE HERO AND SELFLESS SAINT FOR THE AMERICAN BULLY AND THERE ANCESTORS BEFORE THEM. This is Randy...I rescued him on July 4th, finding him chained to a fence by my apartment. As some of you may know, I own and operate GoDoG Walking and Sitting Services, so along with my three dogs, " two guest pups", and my buddy Dennis, we took a midnight stroll when I heard barking from across the street. My pack and this large Pit Bull " had words" from across the street. Instantaneously, I recognized the cues, and knew that this dog had been abandoned. I had Dennis continue on with our pack, and I went across the street to investigate, only to discover, our soon-to-be-named Randy, chained to the outside of a brownstone on the street, with a water bowl at his feet. His territorial barking at us, seamlessly, and quickly turned to tail wagging-face-licking, and squeals-pleas for help. I had Dennis come back around with our pack to confirm what was pretty obvious, that Randy has some "socialization" issues with other dogs ( though, further work with him revealed, that his "mistrust" of other dogs, is most apparent when on leash, and on walks )...We took him to the 24 vet, who told us that "someone else had brought him in earlier", and said, "THEY had found him"...Bullshit ! So, whomever, took him back out and tied him up on the street, leaving him to whatever fate may come...the vet, would only call the ACC, who would probably of destroyed Randy within 72 hours...I could not bring him back home, so we cabbed it up to my devoted and stellar employee's in Bed Stuy, where Randy stayed for a couple of weeks. I took him to the vet, got him all his shots, etc...My employee and his girlfriend cared for Randy while I went to work trying to place him in a foster/forever home. He could only stay with my employee for two weeks, those two weeks came and went, and still no place for Randy, so I brought him home with me, and spent a few days with him, working with him and my dogs, and just falling in love with him. Randy could not stay at my place for too long due to his "socialization challenges", so through my tenacious, and diligent networking, I was able to place him in a no-kill shelter in the Bronx for two weeks...those two weeks will be up Saturday 8/6...Randy is a 70 LB Pit Bull, fixed, super loving, sweet, just want's to know his place in a pack, a family, and be with people. He is an older guy, maybe 8-12 years old estimated...My assessment, and my professional, intuitive opinion...Randy was probably some sort of junkyard dog, a guard dog, who was never socialized with other dogs..he has no scars, and I do not believe he was a "fighting dog", just isolated, and neglected. If anyone can foster him, or knows of anyone who can foster him, even if just for a couple weeks, or if anyone knows someone who would like to adopt, care for, and love this dog, please let me know....any foster costs will be paid for, and I am happy to come and work with him if you are close, and at the very least, educate you on what this dog needs. This guy just wants love, if ONE person, gets behind ONE dog or cat, we can change the whole evil landscape/system that discards and destroys our pets, our companions, who are nothing but pure, unconditionally loving, and devoted to us...this to me is sacred.

A story in the Express-News, on March 31, 2009, by Eva Ruth Moravec, “7-month-old boy dies from dog attack,” told how an infant was literally torn to shreds as he was mauled, maimed and bitten to death by his grandmother's two pit bulls in her home.

When the grandmother attempted to intervene, these violent animals turned their aggression on her. The dogs were so vicious they had to be shot to death by the police so rescuers could reach the infant. Sadly, according to neighbors and family, these dangerous dogs had attacked previously.

As trauma surgeons, we feel obligated to bring to attention a life-threatening issue we have observed in San Antonio — that of dangerous canines posing a public health risk.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 885,000 people per year require medical attention for dog bites. In 2006, more than 31,000 Americans required reconstructive surgery as a result of dog attacks.

We're writing to bring this problem to the fore, along with information from Spain about an effective program to mitigate this issue. We cite two articles, both published in respected medical journals:
The first paper, “Mortality, Mauling and Maiming by Vicious Dogs” was published in the Annals of Surgery, April 2011. We looked at mortality and morbidity in patients hospitalized at our trauma center due to dog bite injuries.

We compared data for patients attacked by pit bull-type dogs to those attacked by other breeds and found patients attacked by pit bulls had more severe injuries, higher hospital charges and a higher risk of death.

The second article, published in Injury Prevention in 2010, is entitled “Decline in hospitalizations due to dog bite injuries in (Spain) 1997-2008. An effect of government regulation.”

It looked at hospitalizations caused by dog injuries before and after the enactment of stricter regulations on dog ownership and found a nearly 40 percent decline in hospitalizations after regulation.

The U.S. does not have standardized legislation regarding dangerous animals from state to state. Also, dog bite injuries aren't reportable, according to CDC guidance, so such data are captured inconsistently, probably underestimating the magnitude of this problem.

Texas has dubiously been a leader in the number of dog bite deaths over the past decade. Texas also has legislation that specifically prohibits municipalities from enacting breed-specific legislation regarding dog ownership, regardless of recognized epidemiology.

Regardless of this legislative restriction on counties and municipalities, many communities and subdivisions restrict breed ownership in their covenants and restrictions. And the federal government enforces prohibitions on certain dangerous dog breeds on multiple federal military installations.

We think a hearing is required on this public health problem, and that the Texas Legislature should take steps as Spain has done to deal with the problem — so no other family has to face the pain of losing a child to this senseless, violent and fully preventable cause of death.

hershey, pennsylvania 44 yr old dog groomer LYNETTE WILHELM refused to show her face to the WHTM news camera but she happily granted them an interview from her hospital bed detailing her recent encounter with a gripping dog. WILHELM claimed she was walking in a park when out of nowhere the white gripper approached her and attacked for no reason. the police responded quickly and shot and killed it. the dog also bit her mother, who the victim claims she called for help. “Dogs can really, really hurt you. They’re like little muscles with teeth,” Chappelle said. “Even friendly dogs can bite. You have to play nice with dogs.”

Chappelle told the campers not to judge all dogs by their breeds, using Mugzi as an example. She said pit bulls often get bad raps because owners have been known to train them as aggressive guard dogs.

“We have 11 pit bulls in the shelter because people don’t know they can be a family pet,” she said. “That’s when I get on my soap box. I take Mugzi everywhere — she’s Miss PR.”

But, watching this video also makes it clear that it's not just the owner. The pit bull's behavior is extremely bizarre and unique to gripping dogs. The pit bull is completely oblivious to what's going on around it. It is in its own little world. It is high on chromosomes.

There's one way to test that theory. Take any serious pit bull mauling and substitute other breeds. Take 85 yr old Rosie Humphreys for example. Rosie and her small poodle were killed by BRIAN PENNINGTON'S loose purebred american pit bull terrier during a routine daily walk. Now try substituting golden retriever in that sentence. How about dachshund? collie? Absurd, isn't it? If breed is truly irrelevant and the problem is truly irresponsible owners, then ANY breed of dog owned by BRIAN PENNINGTON would have yielded the same deadly result.

Lani Blaylock, Union County Dog Deputy, Forced to Remove Her Pit Bull From La Grande Elementary School During Dog Bite Safety Class

Well, the pit bull apologia is "super fired up", again. The source of this week's nation wide temper tantrum is over the injustice suffered by deputy LANI BLAYLOCK and her pit bull when she was told her pit bull was not welcome on school grounds. The target of their deranged witch hunt is Superintendent Larry Glaze and the La Grande Oregon School District.

While the cyber nutters stir the pot and rally the troops, the BLUE MOUNTAIN HUMANE ASSOCIATION are proving themselves to be petty tyrants in a twisted game of chicken. The BMHA packed up their toys and are refusing to play with the school district. If they can't use pibbles in their dog bite safety program, they will not participate at all. that'll show 'em! The BMHA will punish the children by depriving them of information that could spare them serious injury and even save their lives while simultaneously placing the blame of any injuries from future attacks squarely on Supt Glaze for endangering children while pushing their pit bull agenda.

The BLUE MOUNTAIN HUMANE ASSOCIATION was quick to take the credit for a 3rd grader avoiding serious injury when he was recently attacked by a german shepherd and applied the knowledge he learned by "pretending to be a rock". Of course the good samaritan that came to the boy's aid by "waving a white bag" and scaring the man eater away might have had something to do with the boy escaping serious injury too. (who knew a white bag could be such a powerful weapon! certainly not the group of people who even after using a blow torch! could not stop a pit bull from attacking)

Pit bull advocacy is no stranger to valuing pit bulls above people and this nutter is no exception. QUEALY-MINER vociferously opposed the euthanasia of OREO, an abused pit bull in New York City. OREO was sentenced to death after the pit nutters at the ASPCA determined she could not be rehabilitated, a dog so dangerous she even attacked her handler. QUEALY-MINER is now dedicated to passing a law that will spare New York's most aggressive dogs from euthanasia.

What do we know about LANI BLAYLOCK and BOMANI?

For starters, LANI BLAYLOCK is a Union County Deputy Animal Control Officer.

In March she adopted BOMANI, an adult male pit bull of unknown history with injuries from either neglect or abuse. BLAYLOCK spent "months" training BOMANI, then began taking the male pit bull of unknown history to elementary schools to teach kids about dog bite safety.

BLAYLOCK'S other dogs are snack sized and I suspect this is BLAYLOCK'S first pit bull. The newbies are always the most rabid defenders of the breed.

On March 18th, BLAYLOCK posted a photo of her partially destroyed sofa. She attributed the damage to her "couch eater" and stated "This is what happens when your dog breaks outa his crate while you are work! LOL"

On mother's day, the animal control officer posted a photo of her hand with a single tiny tooth mark. BLAYLOCK stated she was bitten by a "lil puff ball" while walking her dogs. She jokes with a facebook friend about needing training on how to handle animals.

But the real facebook fun occurred on October 20th when Deputy Blaylock's panties were in bunch over being evicted from the school. Unfortunately, I am unable to link to it because BLAYLOCK deleted the incriminating evidence, so here are a couple of screen shots. You will want to click on them to view larger.
In this first conversation, BLAYLOCK tries to play the racist card and when a friend points out that pit bulls not people were "bred to fight and kill", BLAYLOCK shows her true colors by stating the Iraquis were bred to fight and kill.

In the second conversation, BLAYLOCK touts herself as a "highly trained" dog handler (see lil puff ball comment above) and then tries to play some kind of badge card, stating the kids were taught not to trust the judgment of cops. In essence, she is claiming the superintendent has not only insulted pit bulls but all law enforcement.

Conduct unbecoming of an officer

I find the conduct of all of these nutters unacceptable but the bullying by these two officers and the ignorance spewed about our current middle eastern enemies is down right disturbing. My hope is that BLAYLOCK was not only forced to remove her ignorant and hateful comments by her superiors but that she and FALCK were also reprimanded and forced to issue an apology to Glaze and the La Grande School District.

Law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard in their professional as well as private lives. I was unable to locate the Union County Oregon Sheriff's Code of Conduct but I have included a couple from various departments to give you an idea of what is expected from those who choose a career in law enforcement.

Animal People: More adoptions will not end shelter killing of pit bulls

Tangible progress on behalf of animals is often hard to recognize, amid paradoxes such as polling data showing that more people think about farm animal welfare even as world meat consumption is at an all-time high and rising.

Just about everyone agrees, though, that the past 25 years have produced unprecedented improvement in the human relationship with dogs, especially here in the United States. Americans keep half again more pet dogs than in 1986. Average spending per dog per year for food, toys, and accessories has increased from $58 in 1986--with purchasing power worth $114 today--to $347. Yet sales of doghouses, once the most costly common dog accessory, have crashed, because most dogs today live indoors with their people.

The first legislation to ban prolonged dog tethering had just been introduced in 1986. More than 150 cities, counties, and at least four states now limit or ban tethering.

Average spending per dog per year for vet care has increased from barely $50--worth $98 today--to more than $200. The percentage of dog keepers who spend more than $1,000 per year per dog on vet care has quadrupled in only 10 years. Vaccination wholly eradicated canine rabies from the U.S. more than a decade ago. By 1995 more than 70% of the U.S. dog population had been sterilized.

A dog who was impounded or surrendered to a shelter 25 years ago had just a 10% chance of being rehomed. Dogs in shelters today have about a 60% chance of being rehomed--unless they happen to be pit bull terriers or close mixes of pit bull, whose sterilization rate is still barely 25%.

Only 3.3% of the dogs advertised for sale online are pit bulls, implying that only about 3.3% of all the dogs sold are pit bulls. Yet more than 16% of the dogs adopted from animal shelters since 2007 have been pit bulls, meaning that shelters are persuading adopters to choose pit bulls at about five times the rate that dog purchasers choose to buy pit bulls when they buy dogs from breeders. Despite that extraordinary rate of success in pit bull placement, however, about 75% of the pit bulls and pit mixes arriving at shelters are killed, either due to dangerous behavior or simply because shelters are receiving pit bulls in ever-escalating volume. Each year from a third to 45% of the total U.S. pit bull population enters an animal shelter, a phenomenon never seen with any other dog breed.

Of critical importance to realize is that there are very few accidental pit bull births. Because nothing resembling a pit bull occurs in nature, it is necessary to practice line breeding, mating pit bull to pit bull or a very close mix, to continue to have them. Almost every pit bull who contributes to the surplus is a product of deliberate breeding, sometimes by a dogfighter, but most often just someone engaging in speculative backyard breeding, capitalizing on a perceived vogue for pit bulls created at least in part by the aggressive advertising of shelters and individual rescuers who hope to rehome more pit bulls instead of having to kill them from lack of other options. No dogs are shown more often in animal shelter adoption advertising, including in poses involving facial contact and small children--which contradict almost every tenet of education about avoiding dog bites.

There may now be more organizations focused on pit bull rescue and advocacy than rescue and advocate for all other specific breeds combined.

Pit bulls rarely arrive at shelters as unwanted litters. Typically they come to shelters at about 18 months of age, having already had at least three homes: their birth home, the home they were sold to, and one or more pass-along homes that took the dogs in after problems developed in the first home into which they were purchased. About two-thirds of the pit bulls entering shelters have been surrendered by their primary caretakers, but many were not voluntary caretakers. They simply ended up with an unwanted pit bull after a family member or friend abandoned the dog, or a tenant moved and left the dog behind.

The pit bulls who are surrendered to shelters tend to be the lucky ones. More than 5,000 pit bulls have been seized in dogfighting raids since 2000, a mere fraction of the numbers believed to have been killed either in dogfights, in connection with training dogs to fight, or in culling dogs who lose fights or show little promise of becoming successful fighters. Pit bull thefts by dogfighters looking for "bait dogs" are believed to be one of the major reasons why 19% of the dogs who have been reported stolen since 2005 have been pit bulls. About 21% of the dogs impounded in cases of severe and prolonged neglect since 2005 have been pit bulls, and also 21% of the dogs impounded in cases of violent abuse--including 49% of the dogs set on fire and 14% of the dogs raped in bestiality cases.

But pit bulls are not just the victims of mayhem. Disfiguring and fatal pit bull attacks on humans have occurred during the past two years at the rate of two every three days, an unprecedented pace. Pit bulls and close pit mixes have since 1982 accounted for 45% of all U.S. and Canadian fatalities from dog attacks on humans, a total of at least 207; 51% of all dog attack disfigurements of children, a total of more than 850; and 66% of all dog attack disfigurements of adults, a total of more than 700. Since 2005 pit bulls have also accounted for 51% of all reported fatal dog attacks and disfigurements of pets and livestock.

The advent of online news media data bases going back into the mid-19th century has enabled several different researchers to establish that there has never been a time since 1851 when pit bulls did not account for more than half of all fatal dog attacks over any given 10-year interval, even though pit bulls--by all of the many names for them combined--never amounted to even 1% of the dogs in the U.S. and Canada until approximately 30 years ago.

ANIMAL PEOPLE editor Merritt Clifton began collating dog and cat theft data in 1980, dog and cat neglect data in July 1982, and breed-specific dog attack data in September 1982--all several years before pit bulls became a public issue. The consistently disproportionate involvement of pit bulls in fatal and disfiguring attacks was evident by 1988. Disproportionate involvement of pit bulls in theft and neglect cases took another five years to clearly emerge. In the interim, Patricia Curtis in her 1984 book The Animal Shelter issued a prescient early warning about an apparent resurgence of dogfighting and a rise in arrivals of pit bulls at shelters. Mike Oswald, the longtime director of Multnomah County Animal Services in Portland, Oregon, noted in 1986 that pit bulls had become disproportionately represented in shelter intakes and killing.

But no one appears to have imagined that pit bull proliferation would ever remotely approach the crisis that it has become.

Shelter killing accelerates

About 8.4 million dogs were killed in shelters in 1986, of whom about 168,000 (2%) were pit bulls, according to the limited available breed-specific data.

Alarmed by several serious pit bull attacks in New York City public housing, and by eruptions of dogfighting after it had been successfully repressed in New York City for almost a century, then-New York City mayor Edward Koch sought to ban pit bulls in 1987. The American SPCA and attorneys associated with the Animal Legal Defense Fund responded by initiating organized opposition to breed-specific legislation, against the advice of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States.

Though Koch was thwarted, legislation to restrain pit bull proliferation was adopted in several other cities. Denver in 1989 passed the strongest and oldest pit bull ban still in effect, emulated by some nearby suburbs. In May 2004 the Denver pit bull ban was overturned by state legislation that forbade breed specific ordinances, but it came back into force in late 2005, after Denver won a court ruling that the state law infringed rights specifically given to local governments in the Colorado constitution. The net result is that Denver is among the few major U.S. cities which have had no fatal dog attacks in the past 20 years, while killing fewer impounded dogs of all breeds per 1,000 residents than any other major city between the coasts, and killing less than half as many pit bulls per thousand human residents (.14) as Miami/Dade County, the animal control jurisdiction killing the next fewest pit bulls (.33). Miami/Dade also has breed-specific legislation prohibiting possession of pit bulls.

The total number of dogs killed in U.S. shelters fell by more than 40% between 1986 and 1993, but the number of pit bulls killed in shelters more than doubled, to about 358,000--15% of the total.

Striving to implement the 1994 Adoption Pact, which made San Francisco at least nominally the first U.S. "no kill" city, the San Francisco SPCA introduced free sterilization of pit bulls. When that did not stop the rising influx, the SF/SPCA in 1996 renamed pit bulls "St. Francis terriers," in hopes that changing their image would make them more adoptable. More were adopted--but the original "St. Francis terrier" program was suspended within 60 days, as was a similar program introduced by the Wisconsin Humane Society, when several of the strenuously screened and rehomed dogs turned out to be cat-killers.

After retooling and relaunching the "St. Francis terrier" program several times, and having another fiasco in 2003 when an adopted pit bull attacked a police horse, leading to two human injuries, the SF/SPCA and San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control between them reduced their pit bull killing to 450 per year. Then, against vigorous opposition from the SF/SPCA and local animal rights groups, the SF/DACC persuaded the San Francisco City Council to pass an ordinance requiring all pit bulls to be sterilized. Pit bull shelter killing in San Francisco fell to 300 in the first year after the ordinance passed. Within another year San Francisco shelters were killing fewer pit bulls than any cities except Denver and Miami.

Nationally, in absence of any effective brake on pit bull proliferation outside of the few cities with breed-specific laws, pit bulls by 2003 accounted for 23% of dog admissions to U.S. animal shelters and 50% of the dogs killed in shelters: upward of 900,000.

Echoing the "St. Francis terrier" program, the New York City Center for Animal Care & Control opened 2004 by announcing that pit bulls would henceforth be promoted as "New Yorkies." That lasted just three days.

Ontario province, Canada, in 2005 adopted a law prohibiting possession of pit bulls, but allowing pit bulls already in Ontario to remain if they were licensed, sterilized, vaccinated, insured, and kept in a safe manner. The Toronto Humane Society howled that this legislation would introduce a pit bull holocaust. In truth, Ontario shelters now kill fewer pit bulls, cumulatively serving a population of 13 million humans, than the shelters in the Detroit metropolitan area, just to the south, which serve a human population of only 1.2 million.

U.S. shelters in 2006 killed approximately 967,300 pit bulls.

Impoundments of fighting dogs and impoundments of neglected pit bulls both soared after the April 2007 arrest of football player Michael Vick in connection with dogfighting. Twenty-six percent of the dogs entering U.S. shelters were pit bulls. Yet, for the first time in at least 20 years, the numbers of pit bulls killed in shelters actually dropped. The Best Friends Animal Society, already opposed to breed-specific legislation, ramped up efforts to block breed-specific laws, and redoubled promotion of pit bull adoptions. The American Humane Association also became active in opposition to breed-specific legislation.

The publicity boost from the Vick case and the investment of Best Friends et al in saving pit bulls appeared to pay off, for a time, as the numbers of pit bulls killed in U.S. animal shelters fell from 920,000 in 2007 to 825,000 in 2008 and 810,000 in 2009. But the U.S. economy turned bad in 2008, causing more people to surrender pets to shelters, more people to neglect pets, and more people to try to earn a few dollars through backyard breeding. Meanwhile, the vigorous pit bull promotion appeared to hit inherent limits on just how many dogs of any one type can be adopted out. Even if every pit bull had the positive qualities of Lassie, and no problematic behavior, there are only so many people who want big dogs.

Even the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services, which appears to rehome more pit bulls than any other agency in the U.S., kills about 40% of pit bull intake, and has reported increasing pit bull intake since 2008. More pit bulls have been rehomed in recent years than ever before, but as most of the U.S. still has no effective brake on pit bull breeding, pit bulls in 2010 rose to 29% of shelter dog admissions and 60% of shelter dog killing.

The 2010 U.S. shelter pit bull toll of 930,300 was the second highest yet.

In view that the U.S. adoption capacity for pit bulls appears to have maxed out at about 320,000 (16% of total dog adoptions), there is no chance that the humane community is going to be able to adopt its way out of killing pit bulls in high volume until the numbers of pit bulls who are surrendered to shelters or are impounded, nationally, drop by nearly 90%.

That requires reducing the total pit bull population of about 2.4 to 3.5 million currently in homes at any given time to no more than the numbers who are now kept safely in stable homes. Since nearly 1.1 million pit bulls per year come to shelters, and the numbers who die from abuse and neglect also must be considered, as many as half of all pit bulls may have unsuitable homes.

Merely stabilizing shelter intake of pit bulls at the present level would require achieving the 70%-plus sterilization rate that keeps supply-and-demand for other dogs in the U.S. relatively balanced. This would mean nearly tripling the present pit bull sterilization rate of about 25%.

Going from 25% sterilization of all other breeds of dog to 70%-plus took about 15 years of aggressive promotion of sterilization surgery, from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. Pit bull keepers during that time conspicuously ignored the messages that persuaded most other Americans who keep dogs.

Following that effort, we have now had more than 15 years of increasingly well-funded and well-promoted programs aimed specifically at sterilizing pit bulls. Hundreds of humane societies now sterilize pit bulls for free. The San Francisco SPCA has even paid pit bull keepers to have their dogs sterilized. Yet few cities, if any, have reduced pit bull intake at animal shelters without the help of breed-specific legislation.

Raising the pit bull sterilization rate to 70% would keep the annual shelter killing toll of pit bulls close to 900,000 per year. Reducing the pit bull population to the numbers kept safely in stable homes would require sterilizing 90%. A 90% sterilization rate has been achieved, so far, only among indoor pet cats in the more affluent parts of the northeast and west coast. Realistically, a 90% pit bull sterilization rate would be elusive, even if the entire U.S. adopted a pit bull sterilization requirement similar to the 2005 San Francisco ordinance.

Since dog licensing rates tend to run well below 25%, there can be little hope of enforcing pit bull sterilization through licensing enforcement alone. But, completely setting aside behavioral issues, looking just at the numbers, a 90% pit bull sterilization rate is necessary if no-kill sheltering for pit bulls is to become a theoretical possibility.

Only if that is achieved is the hope of achieving no-kill sheltering for all dogs possible.

Unfortunately, behavioral issues cannot be ignored --whether the focus is the behavioral traits of pit bulls or the attitudes and behavior of the people who tend to keep pit bulls.

Opponents of breed-specific legislation often argue that that disproportionately high rates of fatal and disfiguring pit bull attacks on humans and other animals are the fault of the keepers of those particular pit bulls, and are not representative of typical pit bulls.

This overlooks that pit bulls, like other breeds produced for specific purposes, have been bred for the traits suiting those purposes. Pit bulls have been bred for the ability and the inclination to tear other animals to pieces. This has in turn made pit bulls attractive to the sort of people who have made them the dogs most likely to be violently abused and/or neglected: sadists, people with drug and alcohol addiction, people engaged in criminal activity, and people seeking tough surrogates to compensate for their own perceived inadequacies.

A hint as to how extreme that attraction may be came in a 2006 peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence which discovered that among a sampling of 355 people who kept pet dogs, all who kept pit bulls turned out to have had some sort of trouble with the law. Wrote lead study author Jaclyn Barnes of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, "Owners of vicious dogs who have been cited for failing to register a dog [or] failing to keep a dog confined on the premises...are more than nine times more likely to have been convicted for a crime involving children, three times more likely to have been convicted of domestic violence ...and nearly eight times more likely to be charged with drug [crimes] than owners of low-risk licensed dogs."

Not "nature vs. nurture"

The central behavioral issue involving pit bulls is not a matter of "nature versus nurture," but rather a matter of inherently problematic dogs being acquired by inherently problematic people, who then keep and train the dogs in a manner that multiplies the risk factors.

The past 25 years of animal advocacy opposition to legislation to stop pit bull proliferation echoes mistakes which were behind two of the most catastrophic humane movement failures of earlier eras, each of which caused even more millions of animals to suffer and die, and die suffering. Each of these ancient mistakes has ongoing repercussions.

The first monster mistake came in 1923, when the American Humane Association rejected surgical sterilization of dogs and cats, endorsed for the first time by the American Veterinary Medical Association, as "vivisection"--even though the AHA did not actually oppose vivisection. The AHA, then the only national humane organization, did not accept dog and cat sterilization for more than 50 years. By then Friends of Animals, the ASPCA, and HSUS had long since reversed majority opinion within the humane movement.

The AHA, which for the first half of the 20th century operated the largest public orphanage in New York state, was in 1923 engaged in an ultimately successful fight against eugenicists who sought to impose forced sterilization of orphaned girls. The AHA board felt that approving dog and cat sterilization would set a bad precedent.

Just as rejecting breed-specific legislation has obliged animal shelters to kill unadoptable pit bulls in volume unprecedented with any other breed, rejecting dog and cat sterilization forced the humane community to kill ever larger numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens. This led to the AHA vigorously promoting decompression killing from 1950 until it was abandoned by the last agencies using it in 1985, having been recognized as inhumane many years earlier by the AVMA and by almost every other humane society in the world.

(The AHA in 2010 began promoting decompression to stun chickens, using claims and language echoing those used to introduce decompressing dogs and cats 60 years earlier.)

Most of the longterm consequences of continued opposition to legislation mandating sterilization of pit bulls are still evolving, but educated guesses can be made about what those consequences might include.

Alexandra Semyonova, author of The 100 Silliest Things People Say About Dogs, suspects that the 2008 repeal of a 1993 Dutch ban on pit bulls is behind growing resistance in the Netherlands to admitting any dogs into apartment houses and places of business. The oversupply of housing on the U.S. market has worked against a similar trend developing here, but the momentum of past decades toward opening rental accommodations and condominiums to dogs appears to have slowed.

Political strategists for agribusiness in several states are believed to have weighed the advantages of preserving their longtime alliance with dog breeders against the possibility of using humane organizations' defense of pit bulls as a wedge issue to splinter off public support.

This may never happen, partly because PETA, one of the animal advocacy organizations most feared by agribusiness, is the only major national pro-animal organization to endorse mandatory sterilization of pit bulls. HSUS, the most prominent organization in advancing farm animal legislation, does not oppose mandatory sterilization of pit bulls.

Yet one scenario that ANIMAL PEOPLE editorially warned against in January/February 2004 has come to pass: in absence of laws that effectively reduce the numbers of fatal and disfiguring dog attacks, obtaining liability coverage for dogs is much more expensive, for both individuals and animal shelters.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, dog bites now account for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claims, a recent average of about 16,000 per year. The average payout per claim rose 37% between 2003 and 2010, and is now $26,166. Total payouts run more than $410 million per year.

Since 2004, according to IRS Form 990 data, the insurance premiums paid by major shelters in cities which have legislation to reduce pit bull numbers have declined by an average of 20%; but the premiums paid by shelters which actively promote pit bulls have increased by an average of 33%.

In response to complaints from keepers of pit bulls, Rottweilers, and other high-risk breeds that they cannot find affordable liability insurance, Michigan and Pennsylvania have passed laws to prevent insurers from charging breed-specific premiums, which are meant to reflect the true actuarial risk associated with each type of dog. Similar legislation has been introduced, but not passed, in at least 23 other states.

Credibility at risk

ANIMAL PEOPLE has warned, many times, that the trustworthiness of the humane community itself is at risk when animal advocates deny the realities of the pit bull crisis.

One of these realities is that shelter and rescue dogs have disfigured 26 Americans since 2007 and have killed six--twice as many people in less than five years as were disfigured or killed by shelter and rescue dogs in the preceding 25 years. Sixteen of the dogs who inflicted disfiguring injuries since 2007, and four of those who killed people, were pit bulls. Another was a Presa Canario, produced by crossing a pit bull with a mastiff. The cumulative liability from attacks by dogs from shelters and rescues in lawsuits known to have been settled within the past year alone is in excess of the annual budgets of more than 93% of all U.S. humane organizations.

Another reality is that many of the statements repeatedly uttered by animal advocates on behalf of pit bulls are demonstrably false and easily exposed.

No, pit bulls were never "America's favorite pet." There is scant evidence that pit bulls were commonly kept anywhere as family pets until barely 20 years ago.

No, pit bulls were never "nanny dogs." The sole known published reference to this notion, before the rise of opposition to breed-specific laws, came in a 1922 work of fiction, Pep: The Story of A Brave Dog, by Clarence Hawkes, a blind man who wrote by dictating his stories and--though able to spin a gripping yarn--routinely muddled his facts.

There is scant published reference to pit bulls as anything but fighting and pig-hunting dogs before recent decades. The most prominent news media mentions of pit bulls 50 years ago, in 1961, came in coverage of the purported centennial celebration of an annual dogfighting convention held in Lafayette, Louisiana.

No, bloodhounds as we know them today were not a feared breed in the 19th century. The much-feared "Cuban bloodhound" of the mid-19th century was a cross of pit bull with mastiff, much like today's Presa Canario, bred to hunt and kill runaway slaves. The dissimilar and unrelated floppy-eared English bloodhound came to the U.S. decades later.

No, there is no evidence that if pit bulls were unavailable, some other type of dog would be comparably exploited. Dogfighters have been trying to produce more dangerous dogs for centuries. No breed not closely resembling a pit bull and derived from essentially the same lineage has ever succeeded as a fighting dog.

No, it is not true that breed-specific laws do not reduce bites, though the reduction is typically proportionate to the numbers of pit bulls formerly within the jurisdiction. The reduction in bites reported in Ontario after pit bulls were banned was 4%. However, the primary goals of breed-specific laws are to reduce dog attack fatalities and disfigurements, and to reduce shelter killing. These goals have been fulfilled wherever breed-specific laws have been brought into force.

No, breed-specific legislation is not inherently hard to enforce because of the difficulty of defining particular breeds of animal--so long as the definitions are written to be practical, instead of dwelling on the minutiae for which dog show breed standards are notorious. Many animal control agencies already enforce breed-specific regulations pertaining to what sorts of dogs and horses may be kept outdoors in freezing weather. Breed-specific rules have also long governed horse racing and livestock exhibition.

Yes, the "bad boy" comic strip and silent film character Buster Brown kept a pit bull named Tige. But the whole story is that Tige appeared in four films. His roles included attacking two humans and one other dog.

Egregious misrepresentation aside, the offense for which the humane community is most culpable is promoting pit bulls in a manner which provides free advertising to the pit bull breeding industry.

Paradoxically, some humane organizations recognized back in 1987, when Budweiser introduced the party bull terrier Spuds MacKenzie to promote beer, that this might lead to more people acquiring bull terriers on a whim and then dumping them at shelters. Spuds MacKenzie, though often remembered today as a pit bull, was actually a much smaller and facially different breed of dog--but his bodily resemblance to a miniature pit bull also produced some concern about him possibly helping to make pit bulls more popular.

But that concern was quickly forgotten in the rush during the next 10 years to condemn Walt Disney Inc. for popularizing Dalmatians by re-releasing the 1959 animated anti-fur classic 101 Dalmatians, and then, at intervals of about three years, producing a live-action version plus a sequel. Indeed the popularity of the 101 Dalmatians films did precede a surge of Dalmatian surrenders to shelters--which raised total Dalmatian intake at shelters to about 1% of all dogs. Pit bull intake at shelters during the same years doubled, to 15% of all dogs.

An even more dramatic demonstration of the influence of exposure on dog breed popularity came when Taco Bell in 1997 introduced a mascot Chihuahua. Chihuahua acquisitions soared sixfold in 10 years, making Chihuahuas the third most popular dog breed, and for the first time inundating animal shelters in parts of the U.S. with more small dogs than they could rehome. Shelters in California and elsewhere in the southwest are now exporting surrendered Chihuahuas to adoption agencies as far away as Vancouver, British Columbia.

But while blaming Taco Bell for the Chihuahua explosion, much of the humane community remains oblivious to the role of adoption promotions featuring pit bulls in expanding the market for pit bull breeders, leading inevitably to more pit bulls eventually coming to shelters.

It works like this: humane societies vociferously allege that pit bulls make wonderful pets. But shelter dogs of any breed have a reputation as damaged goods. The ever-increasing numbers of fatal and disfiguring pit bull attacks increase public apprehension of adopting an adult pit bull of unknown history, but the public tends to believe that pit bulls can make great pets if "raised right" from puppyhood.

However, shelters typically don't have puppies these days. Pit bull puppies are in effect in the commodities speculation market, until they grow up and are dumped in shelters. So, persuaded by advertising meant to promote adoptions to acquire a pit bull, Joe and Josephine Q. Public buy a pit bull puppy from a backyard breeder. About one of those puppies in three will come to a shelter within less than two years.

Recommendations ignored

Had the recommendations of ANIMAL PEOPLE president Kim Bartlett to the 2002 Conference on Homeless Animal Management and Policy in Hartford, Connecticut been heeded, animal shelters since then might have killed between eight and nine million fewer pit bulls. Pit bull overpopulation would no longer be an issue.

"I believe that pitbulls have a more negative reputation than most members of the breed deserve," Bartlett said. "I am not endorsing any arbitrary killing of dogs simply because they are of a particular breed, but I favor a ban on breeding of all pit bull-type dogs. I think it is unethical to breed any dogs, or cats, so long as they are being killed by the million for population control. I would rather dogs, as well as cats and other animals, were not bred at all for purely human purposes. Since pit bulls clearly can be more dangerous to humans and other animals, and are more difficult to handle than most other dogs, and--most importantly--since they attract 'owners' who may want to exploit and abuse them, then for the dogs' own good, preventing further breeding should be a priority for the animal rights cause.

"I have an uneasy feeling that a lot of people claiming to be pitbull rescuers are actually pit bull breeders and even dogfighters in disguise," Bartlett added. "Otherwise why would they oppose breeding bans that would not affect dogs already born? People who rescue feral cats want to see an end to their breeding. People who rescue exotic animals such as parrots, lions and tigers, and potbellied pigs would like to see breed bans on those species. Why not the so-called pit bull rescuers? Allowing people with commercial interests in companion animals to have a leading voice in setting policy on dog and cat issues is in my view like allowing chicken farmers to have a leading say in whether or not the animal rights movement advocates vegetarianism," Bartlett continued.

"Public policy on animal welfare issues should not be set by breeders and fanciers, and certainly not by dogfighters who pose as breeders and even pretend to be rescuers. When so-called pitbull lovers and rescuers use language like 'it is the right of Americans to buy [or breed] whatever kind of dog they want,' then they are quite obviously not animal rights advocates," Bartlett finished, pointing out that breeding, buying, and selling any animals is inconsistent with the goal of ending animal exploitation.

ANIMAL PEOPLE again reminds the humane community that an effective response to pit bull overpopulation must target breeding, and must be legislatively mandated, since pit bull breeders have proved intransigently resistant to any and all forms of gentle persuasion.

ANIMAL PEOPLE does not favor confiscating or killing any dogs who have safe and stable homes--but we would favor confiscating pit bulls and other dogs of "fighting" breeds from breeders, as well as from people who abuse and neglect them. ANIMAL PEOPLE believes active enforcement of breed-specific legislation would be most effective if enforcement is triggered by evidence of breeding, sale, or other exchange. The act of offering animals for sale constitutes an admission both that the animals belong to the would-be seller and that they are not considered members of the family.

Effective breed-specific legislation could stop the reproduction of pit bulls and other problematic breeds, stop dogfighting and speculation on fighting bloodlines, curtail shelter intakes of pit bulls and other "fighting" dogs, and reduce attacks on people and other animals.

In some communities, effective breed-specific legislation could not only reduce shelter killing of pit bulls, but also reduce killing of other shelter dogs, whose numbers often have to be reduced abruptly, if their legally mandated holding time has expired, to make room for incoming pit bulls. "Anything that just brings a heap of dead dogs is another tragic failure--and is basically where we already are," ANIMAL PEOPLE editorialized in December 2005. It is profoundly disappointing that six years later the heap of dead pit bulls is many times higher, while much of the animal advocacy community continues to promote the same policies and practice the same denial that for 25 years have contributed to manufacturing the pit bull crisis.

Both dogs were adopted out by the MSPCA six months prior to this incident. The owners signed the dogs over to animal control to be euthanized, because the injuries they sustained in the fight were so severe, they could not afford the vet bills to treat them. The MSPCA's continuation of the Pit Bull PR campaign guarantees that everyone loses: the pit bulls, who are prisoners of their genetic code; the MSPCA, whose reputation and credibility is irredeemably tarnished; and the animals who could have benefited from the resources spent cleaning up the mess created by pit bull owners and breeders."

Study Conducted by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Explains Why They Failed to Rehabilitate Vick Dogs and Why Fighting Dogs Will Never Make Good Pets

There has been a lot of press surrounding the new large-scale study conducted by Best Friends Animal Society and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School of Medicine; in a nut shell, this study found that puppy mills inflict irremediable damage to pet dogs. It found that dogs used as breeders in puppy mills had long term psychological damage, regardless of how clean and well run it was. Here is an excerpt:

The results of the study indicate it really doesn’t matter if the breeding operation claims to be shiny and clean, abiding by the laws, or even whether or not they are licensed by the USDA,” McMillan said. “This study gives us strong evidence that the dogs kept in these large scale breeding facilities don’t just suffer while they’re confined there, but carry the emotional scars out with them for years even when they’re placed in loving homes. Many of the dogs show difficulty in simply coping successfully with normal day-to-day life.

There is no precise, legal definition of a puppy mill. It is generally accepted though, that they are large-scale commercial dog breeding facilities that operate for profit. It is generally understood that they will sacrifice animal welfare to maximize profits. In Defense of Animals notes that any breeder with 4 breeding animals that sells to wholesalers must obtain a USDA license, but that average puppy mills house 65 to 75 animals, though some house thousands.

The main contributing factor to the damage done to these dogs is poor breeding (inbreeding and over breeding), the isolation and lack of "normal" exposure to people, places, noise, etc. Even a small facility that keeps dogs in cages, inbreeds, over breeds, and limits stimulation and socialization can be damaging. The study admits that these dogs will often never be "normal".

So how is this different from what the Vick dogs experienced? The Vick dogs were kept like puppy mill dogs and in addition many suffered the added abuse associated with dogfighting. Federal officers reportedly removed about 54 apbts from Vick's property according to a transcript of his indictment. Of the 54 apbts, about 30 were found on chains in a yard.

The Virginia Beach SPCA reportedly took Vick's 9 beagles, two rottweilers, and a cane corso according to other sources. The beagles had been kept in cages and reportedly had been used both as bait dogs and as blood sources for blood transfusions for the fighting dogs.

Do you see any irony here? In fact, how is this different from what LOTS of pit bull breeders are doing with their "yards"? Vicks pit bulls were not pets, they were kept in isolated kennels, yet the public was told they all went on to assimilate easily and become normal pets! We all know that, in reality, thats not true. Read about Best Friend's Vick dogs: Shaky Mel, Handsome Dan, and the saga of Tug, Denzel and their victim, Beans). Then there is Sweet Jasmine, Sweet Pea and a third, nameless pit bull. Read their accounts and notice that these dogs were suffering in just the way the new BF study describes puppy mill dogs always suffer.

The HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends, and other humane groups have previously been VERY careful when discussing commercial breeding operations, for good reason. MANY working dogs are raised in conditions that may constitute commercial breeding operations. Hunting dogs bred and raised on hunting plantations down south are very typically raised in outdoor kennels, whelped outside, and not treated or handled as pets. Some detection dogs used for security are kennel raised dogs...Some trainers stopped placing bomb sniffing dogs in homes, in part because they were using play drive for training, and the toy had to become a high value resource; in a family home, they were playing a lot, and lost motivation. Kenneling them allowed the rewards to be more controlled.

There is a very real distinction between working dogs, being used for a specific purpose, and pets, whose role is that of a companion animal. Working dogs who are kenneled and bred in commercial breeding operations are NOT pets, but they ARE afforded an opportunity to regularly engage in the type of meaningful "work" which they are genetically motivated to do. In doing this "work", they get companionship from their handler, appropriate excersize, and rewards, which may consist of food, playtime, affection, etc. Because of their inate drive and desire to perform the "work" which they were bred for, and the fact that this work allows them to form a close partnership with their handler, the quality of life these dogs have is often as good as, if not better than, many pet dogs.

On the other hand, the "job" of a pet dog is to be a healthy, friendly, biddable companion who can assimilate easily into our home and community. That is the "work" of a pet dog. The study makes it clear that commercial breeding operations do NOT produce dogs that are suitible for this "work".

One working dog that must also be highly companionable is the Seeing Eye dog. Long ago, The Seeing Eye recognized that they needed to raise their own dogs to develop dogs that have the best innate temperaments and that were physically very healthy. They also recognized that the had to raise the young puppies in families in order to produce mentally healthy, sociable, companionable and biddable dogs that were suitable for their work.

So any kennel that claims to breed dogs as companions, yet houses them like livestock, can be labeled a puppy mill. Which begs the question....which type of breeder are these APBT breeders who run large "yards"? If both common sense and science show us that raising dogs on chains and in kennels does NOT produce a dog that makes a good pet, can we then assume these are "working dogs"? If they are "working dogs", what kind of "work" do they do? If you have 50 pit bulls on your property, on chains and in kennels outside, and are selling their puppies for huge sums of money, what kind of people are buying them? Since anyone looking for a pet pit bull can find literally hundreds of them in local shelters, with incentives thrown in such as reduced adoption fees, free or low cost training, s/n, shots, etc, why would someone buy one from a breeder? If pit bulls in pet homes are being abandoned by the tens of thousands and ending up in shelters, doesn't that mean they are failing at their "job" as pets? Doesn't it indicate that there is NO pet market for these dogs? So what is the real market for large scale pit bull breeders?

Why is it not OK for a pug to be raised in a kennel, but it IS OK for a pit bull to be raised in a "yard"? Why are the Vick dogs held up as success stories, when they show all the same symptoms as the permanently damaged puppy mill dogs? And if all these large scale breeders of fighting dogs are truly selling them as pets, why isn't Best Friends publicly condemning them for the damage done to these dogs?

So is Best Friends willing to take on the dogmen now? The Best Friends study concludes that dogs raised in large scale breeding operations will never be what our society considers "normal". We have no complaint with that conclusion. But at the same time that BF is paying for and promoting this survey, they also advocate for the placement of pit bulls found during dog fighting investigations. These pitiful victims of the dog fighting culture have been raised in isolation, have not been socialized, bred for an activity so violent that it is a felony in all 50 states, and they are inbred to an extreme. BF has successfully championed changes in state law to allow these most dangerous damaged dogs to be adopted into our communities.

Why isn't BF concerned with the breeding and husbandry practices of pit bull breeders? Why isn't BF concerned with the safety of the humans, pets, and livestock that will come into contact with the dogs bred and trained for dogfighting that they have placed in your neighborhood? Can Best Friends explain how dogs of a hundred different breeds are damaged by commercial breeders to the point where many never become normal pets, but pit bulls can be raised in yards, rescued from fighting rings by amateurs and, with hugs and kisses, become normal pets?

Can we ask Best Friends to publicly condemn dog fighters' commercial breeding operations? Who do you think is buying these old time dogfighter's dogs, and for what purpose? Can we conclude that dogs not bred by responsible breeders and raised and housed as pets will not be "normal"? Shouldn't that mean we should be looking at regulating large scale pit bull breeding operations? Shouldn't we demand that BF look at their own research and condemn the practice of attempting to rehabilitate fighting bred dogs from dogfighting busts? After all, they have just proven that these dogs can never become normal and safe companions in homes.

nonlocal "anarchist" home invasion

last august pittybritty, a pit bull owner/advocate (and fairly responsible sounding) showed up and left a few comments. nothing outrageous mind you, nothing that raised my ire or prompted an interest in her, just her personal experience with the breed. you can read them here and here. to my knowledge, she hasn't been back, at least she hasn't left a comment.

on friday, pittybritty's mother left a comment (using pittybritty's profile) outlining a violent home invasion attack against her daughter and her pit bull and attributing it to followers of this blog.

on saturday, an "unbias journalist" with affiliations to ACD JOURNAL left a comment and then another comment attributing the attack to "anarchists" that follow this blog and claiming to be seeking info. on sunday, the "unbias journalist" returned again and accused this "nifty" blogger of finding pittybritty's information and sharing it with my anarchist followers and then "hiding" the information.

i am skeptical. there is no date, no location (i am not even certain of the continent) no information from verifiable sources. i find no evidence of acd journal, bb stunning or a recent home invasion that involved the killing of a pit bull and the beating of a young female on google. i find no evidence that the mother has left the comments anywhere else as the "unbias journalist" has asserted.
maybe one of my readers can turn something up.

to clarify:

i am NOT a pacifist. and i am an avid supporter of the second amendment.

i do NOT condone or encourage preemptive strikes against pit bulls who have not attacked.

i do NOT condone or encourage retaliation against pit bulls who have attacked.

and i most certainly would NEVER condone or encourage a home invasion attack against ANYONE, including pit nutters, dog fighters or responsible pit bull owners.

i do encourage people to LEGALLY arm themselves with lethal weapons and use them against pit bulls and their owners if the need arises.

KLINE was unable to subdue her own dog. i wonder if that would have been the case with a golden retriever? anywho, when police arrived the people pleaser was still going to town on the victim but then became aggressive towards them. the all american dog is dirt napping now. Patricia lost her left arm. FUzupf, what other dog is amputating limbs at this rate? neighbors say KLINE'S all american dog had a history of violence towards other animals but not people. uh-oh, there goes the "but animal aggression is not the same as human aggression" argument. meanwhile, this nutter escaped charges because it appears to be "an honest mistake".

this mishandled, under socialized, abused, unlicensed, unvaccinated BANNED pit bull jumped a fence, entered a school and attacked 3 kids in pawtucket.
on monday, this all american nanny dog escaped his home and charged into a school yard with the 19 yr old owner in hot pursuit. teachers saw this and tried to herd the kids inside but the dog followed them and ended up biting 3 kids. the owner managed to gain control of his people pleasin' pit and fled. as the police were canvassing the neighborhood, they saw a female standing outside holding a pit bull puppy. they quizzed her about the adult pit. she claimed to know nothing but finally admitted it was her boy friend's dog. this is the first ever documented altruistic gesture by a pit nutter. apparently, the girlfriend was concerned about the children undergoing the painful and expensive series of rabies shots. when the police finally located 19 yr old JOSHUA RODRIGUEZ , he was up in his apartment with the door blocked and his arm bleeding. RODRIGUEZ was arrested and taken into custody as was his girl friend after the police found several cell phones, 2 ipods and $1245 in her purse. both RODRIGUEZ and his underage honey have criminal records for drug dealing.

at least 21 yrs of age
have at least $100,000 liability insurance
post a pit bull sign
anyone caught violating pawtucket's pit bull ban is AUTOMATICALLY charged.
JOSHUA RODRIGUEZ is facing a $500-$1000 fine and up to 30 days in jail just for this one infraction.

Animal Control Director John Holmes noted that Monday's incident at St. Cecelia's School was “a perfect example of why the city has this law.”

2200 block of E. Ten Mile, 9-11-11: Royal Oak officers responded to a family trouble call regarding the custody of a pit-bull dog. During the course of the officers’ investigation, the owner of the dog lost control of the animal and the dog charged an officer while he stood on the sidewalk. The officer retreated to the rear of his patrol car but was bitten on the leg. The officer shot the dog and immediately had the dog transported to the veterinarian hospital for treatment. The dog was euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.

on august 31st, Joseph Thompson took 13 yr old Roscoe to his favorite park. Joseph saw three mutants running loose and waited in his car until the pit nutter loaded them in her vehicle. as soon as Joseph and Roscoe got out of the car, the pit bulls launched an attack. they bit Joseph and knocked him down and then proceeded to savage Roscoe. the nutter screamed at her dogs but Roscoe was already mangled by the time she gathered up her 4 legged assassins. the pit nutter promised to follow Joseph to the vet but that would certainly be out of character for the type of low life who owns these freaks of nature. she disappeared and Roscoe was later euthanized at the vet with injuries to his spine, thorax, lungs and ribs.

i looked, but the only pit bulls i could find in the 911 rubble were wrapped in old glory and posing next to lady liberty. convicted felon KRIS CRAWFORD carefully placed this image at the beginning of her shameless pit bull propaganda training film titled Heroes - A Tribute to SAR Dogs. thief/con artist KRIS CRAWFORD tries to manipulate people into thinking pit bulls were involved in the 911 rescue efforts and thus improve their image. KRIS CRAWFORD no doubt also hopes to personally profit from her misleading video by duping the gullible.

KRIS CRAWFORD has a history of stealing and lying and has a criminal record to prove it.
one of KRIS CRAWFORD'S victims and vocal critic writes: "Animal Farm Foundation has received several emails, and calls. Jane Berkey said this was, essentially, people just out to ruin Kris, and it did not matter what she did, it was more important what the pit bull community reaped from her (purported) activities."
DIANE JESSUP defends CRAWFORD, "I don't know Kris that well (I've met her once) but I admire very much the extensive, extremely positive PR she and her search and rescue dogs have given the pit bull breed."

philadelphia, pennsylvania the five gripping dogs belonging to JOSE ALVAREZ and CARMEN RAMOS terrorized their philly neighborhood and even attacked two neighbors. after spending a few days in quarantine, the dogs were returned to ALVAREZ/RAMOS. two days after animal control returned the dogs, ALVAREZ came home from work and found his wife dead. there has been rumors that RAMOS was afraid of the dogs but her niece, Jennifer Velezequez, said that her aunt loved them and was not afraid of the pits.

once again fuzupf leaves me wondering if he is morally corrupt or intellectually bankrupt as his puny brain tries to equate two recent dog fatal maulings.

this nutter's panties are in a twist because two recent fatal dog attacks have not garnered equal media coverage. he is especially disturbed that dogsbite.org has not covered the canadian fatality.

the first death takes place in canada and is of a lone unsupervised 3 year old toddler who wandered onto the property of another where two unrestrained huskies killed her. the second death takes place in australia and is of a 4 year old who was killed by a neighbor's mutant INSIDE her home while watching TV. in addition to the death of the 4 yr old girl, a 5 year old was attacked and suffered injuries to her scalp and a 30 yr old woman was mauled trying to fight the mutant off.

the differences between these two attacks should be obvious to even those of less than modest intelligence.

in the canadian fatality, the parents were negligent and the responsibility of their child's death lies with them. the deadly aggressive act could be viewed as territorial. in the australian fatality, the deadly aggressive act is pure predatory behavior. one small child trespassing and being attacked by 2 dogs versus one pit bull trespassing and attacking 3 people.

He now runs on half and acre with two mixed females. I love him to death and he such a sweetie around people, but he changes when comes near other males. His true personality is calm and really relaxed, but around other males/small dogs its like his prey drive and ego spike. He is not the foaming at the mouth or yanking me to the ground type, but if they get in his range he will strike. They did put him through extensive obedience training and does well with sit, stay, lay, come, and walking off a leash, but changes and will become unfocused around other males. Females he is fine around, no issues what so ever. I would like to know how to keep him stable and focused and not worry about him attacking other dogs. I want to know how to re-channel his true personality and keep him turned off. Thank you so much for the help.

My organization, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, never said we wanted to be "reasonably sure" the female wasn't involved before returning her to her owner. We wanted to be SURE, and we were following our examination of both dogs and from info given to us by the Medical Examiner and two odontologists who compared dental impressions from the dogs with the victim's bite wounds and conlcuded with no uncertainty that the male dog was involved and the female was not. We saw no signs of abuse or neglect on either dog. The dogs were licensed, they had a regular vets. No neighbors called our organization to complain about them. The female was spayed and the male was not neutered. Contrary to reports, he did not weigh 125 lbs or even close. His listed weight from multiple vet visits was between 68-77 lbs.We don't know what could have triggered an attack like this, but believe there must have been one. We do know that many owners either miss warning signs and behavioral cues or notice signs that their dogs' behaviors are changing and ignore them, figuring the behaviors will work themsleves out or get better over time. We know the opposite to be true...that puzzling/problematic behaviors usually become more pronounced over time if unaddressed and always advise people to seek help from a behaviorist. That said, I want to stress that the owner of these dogs said neither had shown any unusual signs or behaviors. Sad, tragic event!

i guess now we wait for rabies to be ruled out to hopefully satisfy all of nutterdom.

DONNA REYNOLDS' reflection on the murder of DARLA NAPORA inspired another brilliant critique from anonymous.

BadRap's advocacy is a failure......if they are unable to convince their own members/supporters to be responsible owners, and do things like neuter their dogs, then how can you expect them to convince the general public?

In the eyes of BadRap, Darla's death was worth it; a small but necessary sacrifice, the price we pay for the "privilege" of living with their beloved breed. (and I would add they see it as normal)

We cannot trust pit bull owners assessment of their OWN dog's dangerousness.

Pit bull owners/advocates seem to often be young people who lack maturity and common sense......why on earth would the Naporas own two large active dogs when they lacked secure housing? They were in a rental unit. And why would they keep these dogs in a tiny, one bedroom cottage? Why would they fail to neuter their dog?

Pit bull "advocates" are fanatics. They are misanthropes who value the life of a pit bull as being equal to, or more important than, the life of a human. They are often bullies, who blame innocent victims of attacks for "provoking" it, and somehow deserving what they got. They lack empathy and compassion for human victims of dog attacks.

Pit bull "advocacy" protects the dog fighters and back yard breeders who are abusing these dogs by fighting against sensible BSL to control over-breeding. Pit bull advocacy's primary function is to protect the rights of people to continue to make money off of these dogs through back yard breeding and dogfighting by protesting any and all regulation on breeders.

Bad Rap's response to this tragedy reveals how far this groups members are from normal society. Greg Napora's ONLY public statement about this tragedy was NOT to talk about his wife...but to defend his dog and the "pit bull breed". He immediately removes his Facebook page, and while in the midst of burying his wife, is on the phone to Donna Reynolds of BadRap? Greg Napora acts like a man who is more upset that he let the members of his "cult" down, than a man who lost his wife and child. Donna Reynolds bizarre statement....that it was just a dog being a dog, essentially......is accompanied by a graphic of a woman and her pit bull walking peacefully into the sunset together. She adds insult to injury by ending her post with "R.I.P. Darla and Gunner", in perhaps the most spectacularly insensitive response to this tragedy I have seen yet.

BadRap members, and other pit bull fanatics, are endangering the public by relentlessly promoting these dogs as pets, and encouraging immature, irresponsible people like Greg Napora to own and promote the breed. It could have easily been one of the Naporas neighbors who was killed.

Its time public officials stopped listening to the dog lobby, and small groups of fanatics, and craft public policy that will restrict breeding and ownership of these dangerous dogs.

the SFGate obituary states DARLA NAPORA "passed away" in her home last thursday. gee, that almost sounds like she died peacefully in her sleep or maybe even an instant painless death after falling off of a ladder, rather than the violent grisly death at her wiggle butt's gaping maws of doom. you can read the preliminary results of the investigation into DARLA'S mauling here.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made to The Darla Napora Memorial Fund (i wonder if this will benefit the cause DARLA avidly supported - pit bulls?)

meanwhile, DONNA is having a tough time deciding which BADRAP t-shirt she should wear to the funeral. i vote for PIT BULL JUNKIE and maybe bring a stack of autographed copies of JIM GORANT'S book in honor of GREG'S unimaginable devotion to the breed AND the deed. i don't know many men who have the presence of mind to immediately delete a facebook account in the wake of his spouse's murder. i don't know of any man who issued a public statement defending their dog and the breed in the aftermath of his spouse's murder. and i certainly don't know of any man who would even consider burying his wife with her murderer. obviously, GREG NAPORA is a very special nutter.

What is really frustrating to me, in the case of homicide by dog attack.....if this were a mountain lion or grizzly bear, we would have every freaking detail about the damn animal. This is a preventable death, which has serious public health implications....and there is no digging into the story to get more information? No picture of the dog, no background on the dog...was it up to date on its shots? Did it see a vet regularly? If so, what did the vet say about it's demeanor? Has this dog been bred? As BadRap supporters, did the dog attend "pit ed" classes? Did it attend any other training classes? Where did the dog come from? Did a rescue organization adopt it out with a promise that it would be a "love bug" if raised with hugs and kisses? Was it purchased from a local back yard breeder, or popular kennel advertising "Monsta Pits"?

If we are ever going to protect the public, we have to address the SOURCE of the problem....who is breeding and selling the dogs that kill people? There is huge political pressure to NOT divulge this information, because the fanatics in the humane movement know it can lead to BSL. The Peninsula Humane Society is on a tightrope now, they can't piss off the pit lobby, because they risk losing the support of donors if the pit jihadists start a campaign against them. So they try to withhold information about the dog. The police, on the other hand, just don't seem to know any better....they don't seem to ask these questions. The reporters just don't get it either....there is a bigger story beneath the surface....can you just imagine being the reporter who breaks the story that, say, a BadRap dog killed someone? Or that a "pit ed" graduate killed someone? Or that the dog came from popular kennel with the typical gansta website advertising giant pit bulls with names like "Mayhem" and "Chaos", replete with spiked collars, and obscene rap music blaring? Might put the husband in a different light, huh? It also may convince the public to demand mandatory s/n for pits to shut down kennels like this.

If it were a person who killed this woman, by now we would know everything about them, even where they went to kindergarten. Reporters would be interviewing the murderer's parents and family. But because its a dog, the authorities are just sitting around, hoping to find out if the dog had rabies or a brain tumor. There may be nine other litter mates of this dog, just as dangerous, like ticking time bombs, and maybe the owners are ignoring warning signs.....don't you think the public has a right to know this stuff?

"People in general should not be in fear of this dog i mean he's super friendly with people but if you have other dogs and you're walking them you should be very careful just because if he's not familiar with other animals, you know, you just don't know." oh, i think she DOES know. the reporter said that that the young woman is familiar with the pit bull, so she knows who the owner is. or maybe she is the owner.

-- Why I love the Bulldogs My personal story I get asked Hey Taylor why do you love this breed so much. Taylor why do you fight for the "gamebred" dog's. Or Tay why are you always fighting with everyone over this breed. Well to me it is so... simple. To me it's like fighting for air to breath. Because with out the dogs in my life I would suffocate. So here is my story. In 1989 I was born. But I was born into a family of bulldogs. My father his father and his father father. All had bulldogs. Yes most of you may not agree with what they did with their dog's however it is what it is and there is nothing anyone could do to change that. I grew up working with my father in the yard. Since I could walk I was out side with my father cleaning feeding and playing with these dogs. I have seen it all before i was in pre K. My Grandfather Jerome Hernandez was a very nice well spoken man who loved the dogs his father raised him with them as well. My Grandfather unlike many others of today even though he was too raised with dogs had to find his own mark and find what worked for him. From what I was told there wasn't many bloodlines to choose from. But of a few and a lot of imported and unknown dogs. He would save everything even to this day I have hand written pedigrees that came from my Great Grand father The oldest I have dates back from 1902 and there is a photo with it and a detailed story about such dog. However I can not find this dog any where online and half of the writing is worn off. My grandfather was around a lot of people one of them he helped was Sonny Sykes. Many may not know who that is and thats fine. So what I am getting at it seems each person in my family even till today myself has seem to fight to do the best for their dogs and in their own way nothing should be handed to us. We all need to fight for them and not expect the work to be done by someone else no matter who you are where you have come from and what you did or didn't do. I have been blessed with so many educational tools and lessons before i was old enough to be thankful for them. I got to see dogs at their best and at their worst. I wasn't sure of my true love of them until I was blessed with my first true love and bond with my first special dog. His name was Peanut. He was so beautiful more like a wild mustang full of life and confidence. He stood at that time as tall as me I was able to look directly into his eyes he could of very easily knocked me down but he was very aware of my smallness and had never tried to over power me ever. He was of an old Carver x colby cross. My grandfather was much into the old Carver dogs. Not really sure why Peanut was bred the way he was But I am sure it was for a reason. He was black with white markings one blue eye and one half blue and brown eye. with big floppy long hound like ears. with big white feet to me that looked like bear feet. My father was also in the services The Marines. He was an old Jar head so to speak. He would get a lot of special trips to do and so on and would be gone for time to time. My father was my world and I loved him very much so he was my Hero. I think more dads of today should take some lessons from my old man. He was the best. At times it may have seem he was hard on me but in all I wouldn't be the strong woman I am today if i didn't have them.When my dad was deployed all I had was the dogs and My dog Peanut. I loved that dog. He would put Lassie to shame. we did everything together even play tea parties. Yes I played tea parties lol. Through the tough times of my life I always had Peanut and he never left my side not ever. My dog Peanut boy oh boy that dog. Even till this day i can laugh and cry at all the times I had with him. I would sneak him in the house at night till my dad gave in and let him become the house dog. he would sleep at the end of my bed. He was a stuff animal destroyer he killed all of my much loved collection but it was worth it never the less. I would share my not so good veggies with him and he would eat them with no complaints. And no one had to know our secrets. Summer times we would go to the lake and go swimming. One day Peanut saved me. One afternoon while in the deep wooded area of VA where I shouldn't of been in the first place. We walked up on a Black bear. This Black bear didn't seem to be too pleased with us walking up on it. and I was young but not too young to understand Bears are dangerous even more so when spooked. This bear was making this loud growl and stomping it's feet. showing its teeth and staring me down. I didn't move out of fright. Peanut however didn't like this bear and made it be known so. As the bear came charging at us. I just stood there like a deer in head lights. Peanut however wasn't as scared and charged back biting the bear on the face that bear flung peanut off like a plastic bag in the wind and the bear came at me but Peanut however came back not backing down and charging that bear once again. By then I climbed up the tree and was screaming hoping someone like my dad would hear me. The bear would swat at Peanut and peanut would hold his ground and keep coming back. By then peanut was all bleeding and the bear didn't seem to be tired or willing to give up as well. But after a while well what seem to be a life time that bear decided to move on and Peanut went chasing after him. I was still in the tree crying and screaming. Thinking my best friend is dead or lost. Finally my uncle comes back there and found me. I was crying so hard as my uncle scooped me up over his shoulder he didn't seem to care much where peanut went. I begged him to please find Peanut. I knew my best friend was hurt and I knew even back then that my dog wouldn't give up and no one was there looking for him to stop him. My Dad wasn't home and wasn't planed to be home till the next day. He had taken his dog Little Shirley out of state to be bred by his friend Jack's dog I believed that dogs name was Blackie That would be the only time Sherley was ever bred later on she had died after a match. That night was so long I didn't sleep for a second. My best friend was gone and alone some where out there. The next day I was up bright and early and headed out to look for my best friend Peanut. I had his favorite in hand a pack of raw hot dogs and a big bottle of water. But I also took back up in case that bear was still around so I took my fathers big hunting knife that was never used. something no little girl should be caring but back then I didn't think so. I called and called and called some more. Where was peanut? When noon came around I had almost given up hope before I had spotted a black flash in some bushes with those neon white markings. There was my friend all beat up limping and bleeding his head was swollen and a slash along the side of him that would show his flesh. Yet he was as chipper as could be wagging his tail and seemed to have been as happy to see me as i was him. When I got home I had seen my Fathers truck in our driveway. He was on the porch getting ready to check all of the dogs and feed them. At that time there was 90 plus dogs there. So There was always work to be done. He turned around took one look at me and another at Peanut and boy he wasn't happy one bit. But he asked me very nicely what had happen to him . Once I told him boy was he very angry for being so dumb to go into the wooded area that far back alone. And at that moment I knew it really wasn't so much anger but maybe fear that I could of been attacked by the bear. My father loved all the wild animals there even if they are dangerous he always felt that we are on their land and we need to give them space. If you been attacked it was due to our meaning humans neglect to be respectful of the animals space. But still I was his little girl. He so quickly grab Peanut and took him to the shed and put him on iv fluids and gave him a few shots one for infection and another for making sure peanut wouldn't go into shock. I don't remember the names of any of them. I do remember him explaining this to me and telling me how important it was that Peanut got those things. He then gave a shot for pain where Peanut's flesh was open. He then had given him another shot that put Peanut to a sleep. He then took a big bottle of clear liquid and poured it over the open wounds and had to cut some of the flesh off. My father had me watch him do this he felt it was needed for me to learn how to do these things. He then put straws inside where he was putting stitches around this whole time my father was checking the dogs oxygen and his heart I was simply amazed at this. My father took over like some sort of Doctor or in the case a Vet. Peanut recovered nicely after he had his much needed rest with us. And grown a custom to bacon and eggs and French toast. My dad would make the best breakfast and by this time Peanut was set a bowl as well plus left overs. By 5 months Peanut was a fat dog but that is what happens when you have a whole family plus people who came over to help my father with the dogs all give Peanut scraps and left overs. By then Peanut was fully healed and my father had an eye on him. He then thought it was time Peanut worked off the extra pounds. My father for months worked with Peanut got him nice and lean he even took him to shows every time Peanut went he would always win Peanut was turning heads all over the place. When ever someone would ask about Peanut my father would point to me and tell them that he belong to me. Some thought it was a joke and others thought it was cute but my father really meant it... Then my father had asked me if I wanted to see if Peanut could prove himself. And I thought sure I had seen my dad test dogs before. I was young what did I know so he did just that. He took Peanut to his litter mate brother his name was Snoopy. My father liked the way they both turned out he then took him to a friend of his dog who was slightly bigger his name was buck he then too said he seen a lot in Peanut. Not much later My father went out of state with Peanut and he matched him to a dog my Grandfather had named Boyel . From what I was told Boyel was experience dog. My father however believed in Peanut. Peanut had an advantage Peanut was not just a bulldog but was also a house dog and had a very heavy bond with us. My father said they went at it back and forth for over an hour a hard hour my grandfather then picked up his dog Boyel and said he had enough. When My father came home with Peanut I didn't like it Peanut looked rough real rough. My dad once again fixed him up and months later Peanut was back to his old self with a few more scars yet he was still the same old Peanut. Peanut and myself started to get older our bond was always the same he was my best friend he was there when no one else was. Peanut and I still went out in the woods even though i had known better. I just felt like it was a home away from home sometimes it felt more home then the one I lived in. It was the one place I was able to see Peanut run and be free as did I. He would fetch sticks and have races with me. We would jump in old pile of leaves and find treasures. It came that time again My father took Peanut back out. But this time wasn't like the rest My father along with a friend Had Peanut wrapped in a sheet My father didn't look happy. I heard of some yelling among my father and his friend something had gone wrong. Peanut wasn't wagging his tail. I walked over to the shed where my father was he was covered in blood. His friend yelling just take out back it aint worth it. My father was sweating I knew something was wrong. My father looked over at me with this lost face. He didn't have that full confidant look on his face. Peanut was just layingthere. My father was giving him shots of whatever he started CPR Peanut just didn't budge. I knew my best friend wasn't coming back and I blamed my father when he looked at me and said he tried it all I started to scream he killed the one thing in my life who never was away he knew gave up on me Peanut was always there He knew all of my secrets. In that split second My father went from my hero to someone I hated. And I did. Peanut laid there on this big steal table eyes wide open I seen my reflection in his eyes. I kissed his nose as I fell down I hurt that night more then ever. The pain of losing my best friend was a pain that was unbearable. It's a feeling of being kicked in your stomach and you lose your breath. You can't hold your head up. The world feels as if it leaning on your shoulders. I didn't care that Peanut won his last match. That didn't matter to me. What did matter was I no longer had my friend my pal the one thing that was always there who was never busy was now gone. My father was no longer my Hero he was a murder. From that day on I knew I wouldn't want to see this happen again. The day we buried Peanut I promised him that I'd never let hurt happen to any other dog in my life or in my care. I promised him I'd never forget him and I wont. I haven't bonded with another dog till much later in my life and that is my heart and sole Gambler. I see the same sparkle in Gambler when he is with my own little girl. I see a bond with them as I had with my own dog. They will never have to face what I did when I was her age. She will never have to say good bye to her best friend in the same manner as I did. But there fight is a bit different then mine and that is BSL. BSL can always strike it's something of the same. It is like a virus. And is spreading state to state and town by town. I feel my love for this breed for all the little boys and girls and their Peanuts and Gamblers. They need to be heard they need us to fight for them. I wont give up some may say I have no right to fight for BSL since I come from a family of dog fighters but I believe I have to fight more so because of that. I must change my family past for this breed make my way to give back to the dogs. Understand them in a way most can not.Or most can't handle. I can't see another dog die due to a virus our government's sets. As far as my father I didn't forgive him till the day we buried him. I felt if anything he had to answer god. I loved my dad I really do and still do he is my father after all. And he was doing what he was raised in doing. It was just the way it was. He has a passion in it just like I have one not in it and helping the breed. Maybe I wasn't into it because of Peanut maybe in the jest of it all he helped me see a different way. Maybe it's because I am a female and tend to be more on the emotional side. Who knows why I turned out to be who I was but I am what I am and I have every intention of being of just that being me and standing by what I love. I am thankful for my life long lessons and find myself still being a student I am always learning and keeping my ears open to all of the possibilities. I wish that one day that my own experiences can help someone else and maybe change just one person. Maybe one day we of all sides who love the breed/breeds can come together and help with the fight and end BSL. maybe even help an irresponsible owner become of an responsible one Maybe one day it's a dream and that is all it needs to be everyone had a dream but very few fight to make them come true. I haven't given in yet and still fighting. Each day I find a way or dot down a plan of making changes and helping . That is it folks this is my story why I am who I am and why I love these dogs and why I am in the fight and as passionate as I am about the breed.
