He couldn't guarantee his roommates would never set her up to fail, and it was a risk he wasn't willing to take.

Just remember to keep her away from cats and dogs and she will be the happiest Princess on the block! Shame on her.

A person with a science background is supposed be a critical thinker. If she is going to endorse this shelter's policies of adopting out pit bulls, and in particular dogs with unknown histories or, that have displayed shyness and fear, (code for 'will become aggressive') she should bother to read up on how genetics, and the breeding of pit bulls contributes and controls their aggression and that NO amount of behavior modification will change their instincts.
The plastic hand test always cracks me up.

I wonder if the good doctor would call CPS if she treated a child that was mauled by an 'Apollo-type' dog from Hamilton Humane Society where she is Director of Operations? How would she feel then?

There is so much corruption with these so called animal experts, from AC officers, to dog behavior experts, to shelter veterinarians like that hippie Janowitiz from San Mateo.

Their primary and ONLY concern is getting a dog into a home rather than putting a questionable, high risk, dog down. I tell everyone never to give to a shelter and the reasons why.

I have two friends that are peds and both have treated kids mauled by pit bulls. They say the injuries are far more serious than just the average dog bite due to the muscle damage and tearing.

Tara Harris needs to wake up and smell the coffee if she wants to keep her reputation intact as a pediatrician.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4325894281523642428.post-45186293831391045182013-05-22T09:08:18.803-07:002013-05-22T09:08:18.803-07:00Sternberg's sin is that she doesn't believ...Sternberg's sin is that she doesn't believe in adopting out potentially dangerous dogs to the average pet home, and she has done decades of research to help her identify which dogs are dangerous.

She believes that shelters are working within the reality of limited resources, so that when a decision has to be made about which dog to invest time and money into, shelters should choose dogs with sound temperaments over dogs with non-social, or aggressive temperaments. She believes that no friendly, adoptable dog should be euthanized for lack of space or resources.

She also believes that if more shelters offered the public friendly dogs with sound temperaments, people would view the shelter as the BEST place to get a family pet, and fewer people would buy from pet shops and puppy mills. This last observation I see as fact where I live....more and more families are turning away from adopting because of the train wrecks they see their friends and neighbors coming home with from the local shelters.

The irony is, she truly evaluates each dog as an individual, and not by breed....she WILL adopt out a pit bull that passes her temperament test. But fans of dangerous dogs hate her, because she won't humor them like most humane advocates do, and mouth the dumb platitudes about becoming no kill.

Her approach to dog adoption is humane, intelligent, and really celebrates the bond between people and dogs. If more shelters and rescues adopted her approach, I think you would see a significant drop in the number of people buying dogs from breeders. The reality is, adopters tend to gravitate toward friendly, social dogs.....I am sure they don't really understand why they are attracted to certain dogs and not others. The reality is that dogs that offer gentle social gestures,( like soft eye contact, a low, wagging tail), and who seems to enjoy and are calmed by petting, tend to be self-selected by adopters. Dogs that are aloof, and merely tolerate petting, who would score low in "sociability" tests, simply are not as appealing.

It makes sense....normal people tend to value relationships where they get something in return for their effort and affection. I think that dogs have actually evolved with humans to develop gestures that we must unconsciously respond to...the soft, squinty eyes, ears back, low wagging tail, the dogs that seems to gently melt into you when you pet them....I think we are unconsciously attracted to dogs like this, and those dogs get adopted out quicker when they land in shelters. Dogs like Apollo probably give off all kinds of warning signs that they would not make a good pet....people just don't feel they connect with these dogs, and they can't explain why.

Naturally, dogs like Apollo tend to appeal to people with a deviant view of healthy relationships.....that would explain the bizarre statement from Apollo's owner. The Hamilton Humane Society backed themselves into a corner by trumpeting their "rehabilitation" of this dog to the public, so they could not euthanize him. So they lowered their standards and adopted him out to the first weirdo that clamed to want him.

I would love to see a lawsuit against a Humane Organization that adopts out a dangerous dog like this.Branwyne Finchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14314620851450710984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4325894281523642428.post-1496960054679215572013-05-22T00:02:21.856-07:002013-05-22T00:02:21.856-07:00thank you for sharing this francis.

For instance, the killing bite is a fixed action pattern, part of the predatory instinct. But dogs have to learn what is prey and what is not.

Do not expect to utilize dog parks

Teach dog to ignore everything--other dogs and people until owner gives permission.

Some Pit Bulls are good with other pits, but not with other breeds...and vice versa.

Pit Bull or Pit Bull type dogs are reportedly responsible for a higher percentage of bites than other breed types.

The population of a particular breed has a great deal to do with the number of reported bites.

The size of the dog is relevant.
San Francisco Chronicle June 2005

Pit Bull Terriers are status symbols in some parts of the society.

Pit Bulls are also seen as the underdog that needs to be saved.

From the APBT Standard
"Because most of the APBT's exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog."

Trish King goes on to give her "private opinion"

Rather than punishing the dog for being born a particular breed, make the owner/guardian responsible for having that breed.

Ms. King acknowledges pit bulls are not just "any dog".
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4325894281523642428.post-41702090912667327702013-05-21T22:01:59.022-07:002013-05-21T22:01:59.022-07:00Great comment, Dude.
