this is what BEST FRIENDS and head pit nutter LEDY VANKAVAGE call an adoptable fight bust dog.
"quivering in the corner, shaking uncontrollably, convulsing, scared shitless" this is the reporter's description of MEL - today, in his new home after being "rehabilitated" by BEST FREINDS, not THREE YEARS AGO when he was rescued from MICHAEL VICK'S sanguinarium.
MEL'S new owner says "Mel's come a long way. We can pet him. He sleeps in bed with us. But he's scarred for life. He's never barked. Never made a noise. There are times when he's just terrified."
wow! MEL'S been in his new home since september and they can pet him! goose bumps.
personally, i think it is inhumane to keep an animal this psychologically damaged alive but hey, MEL has enriched the lives of his new owners beyond their wildest dreams and that's all that really matters. you just can't put a price on all of that admiration you receive from friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances and every stranger you meet when you tell people you have made the ultimate sacrifice and opened up your home to a VICK dog. this is what the rescue angels call a status dog.
even 7th generation pit dog woman TAYLOR HERNANDEZ thinks this dog should be culled. we finally agree on something ms gamedogs.
see also pimping the vick dogs, ssshhh
This is sickening. As someone who has adopted extremely shy, abused dogs - there is something wrong with this animal and it should have been put down the very first day. It will never be an acceptable pet, and is therefore a great liability. Bait dog my ass, in the pit nutter world there are more bait dogs than fighting dogs. And only a nutter would get a sense of pride out of prolonging this dog's misery. More proof that it is not about the dogs but only about how the dogs make them feel. At least the dog fighters are honest about that.
ReplyDeleteoh MOST DEFF that dog should have been put to sleep . There are many many human and dog friendly pit bulls in rescue dogs who are stable and healthy why do they spend so much money keeping these dogs alive Crave? I'm all about education and this dog is what we don't need and the people who adopted him should do whats best for that dog and put him to sleep
ReplyDeleteIt is inhumane to keep a dog like that alive.
ReplyDeleteOMG, Craven, you are so right. Not only will this pit end up mauling someone, but it is so wrong to make this dog suffer like they are doing. Some rehab when a dog ends up like this three years after the fact.
ReplyDeleteSleeps in bed with them.... LOL They don't know xxx can be a trigger for pits?
ReplyDeleteRepulsive.
ReplyDeleteLots of abused Lab/Shepherd crosses closer to home and a whole lot cheaper, where I live. But I guess they don't bring the right kind of "enrichment"...
ReplyDeleteWhen I read these stories I always wonder what happened *before* they "could pet the dog" or what happened when you "touched her back end"?
If the dog has taken 3 years to tolerate being pet, and shakes to convulsions with fear around strangers - after THREE YEARS - that is cruelty.
ReplyDeleteI agree that after what that dog has been through, it would be better to humanely euthanize it.
There's also the issue of him becoming progressively less fearful - but not unfearful - until he's confident enough to defend himself. That will be a total disaster.
I just found an interesting article by Sandy Bryson who trains police and rescue dogs. She explains that fear is a component of aggression and how excessive and genetically based fear interferes with almost all other learning and behaviors, makes the dog's life a living hell, and makes it a potential danger.
She also has very interesting info about why pits are fucked up and genetically different from all other dogs with documentation.

Mel is the canine equivalent of Teri Schiavo. Let this dog go people!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your fear comments Art. I just happened to catch a dog bite puff piece on one of those morning news/entertainment shows. The vet of course trashed the chihuahua as the most vicious dog and then went on to talk about the most common reason that dogs bite: FEARFULNESS.
I'm gonna check out that link now.
Let some kid back this dog into the corner and they will learn quickly that this was not a bait dog. Fear biters need to be put down, they are indeed the ones that bite the most. Fear in combination with being a pit is truly a recipe for disaster.
ReplyDeleteBagheeram was that vet named Marty something or other? Because if so, he runs a business with AKC breeders and lobbyists that lobby against bsl and all the rest of it. He's a con.
ReplyDeleteI agree that fear is behind most breeds' aggression. Not so with pit bulls. For a pit bull, aggression is what it is, what its bred for, its reason for being.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Honesty that this dog is a double whammy. A fear biter on top of being a pit bull, with its intentionally bred-in aggression.
This whole thing is proof that Best Friends is abusing these dogs. Adopting out this dog is cruelty, especially to people who have no idea how to handle this or what the problems with pit bulls are, who have never even had a large powerful breed. They have a little 13 year old terrier lap dog.
This is possibly the worst placement possible for this pit bull, and Best Friends did this to get this radio personality to give them free advertising.
Not to mention that if you've got a dog that is still convulsed with fear after years of "rehabilitation", why on earth are you dressing it up in doll's clothes, backing it up into a corner, and subjecting it to bright lights for a photo op? Literally, what is wrong with this picture?
ReplyDeleteThat's a sad situation, and a very dangerous one. This animal should never have been put through such psychological torture. Not even happy, healthy dogs particularly like being dressed up. The dog looks terrified.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason that animal is still living is because of the $20,000 dowry and who bred it.
ReplyDeleteIf it came from a penny-less sex offender-dog fighter like Al White, it would have gotten the needle.
The Pit advocates love media dogs...very useful for extracting donations from thier stooges.
I thought that Best Friends got $100,000 payments for each Vick dog, that they were supposed to care for for life at their operation?
ReplyDeleteSo now they've kept the money and dumped the dog.
I have rescued dogs with this much psychological damage. So far, all 5 of them have been rehabilitated. Just like people with PTSD, it can take several years.
ReplyDeleteI can understand if people on this post do not want to take on a dog like this--but if other people do, why are you so critical? Yes, there are lots of undamaged dogs out there that need homes, but this one pitbull is not taking the home away from hundred of other dogs, just from one dog. Why do any of us choose one dog over another? We all know that the dog we do not choose is likely to die.
I wish people supporting animal rights would not attack each other! That wastes too much energy that should be going toward making changes that can help all animals.
Alright let me get this straight; first off most of you call ALL Pit Bull type dogs Frakenmaulers, mutants, $hitbulls, killers, pieces of crap, pieces of $hit, grippers and you also say “No Pit Bull deserves to live kill the entire breed!“ yet you all turn around and act like you care about Mel? I thought all of you hated and fear all Put Bull types dogs. Do you have any idea what you sound like right now as oppose to the other posts? Hypocrites.
ReplyDelete“When I read these stories I always wonder what happened *before* they "could pet the dog" or what happened when you "touched her back end"?”
ReplyDeleteThey probably used a plastic hand like the one they use to test to see if a dog is food aggressive. No person with even a ounce of brain would try to stick their hand into the bowl of a strange dog that eating out of it. Plus when rehabilitating a dog you don’t right away grab it and hug it. Things like that take time because of bait dog doesn’t just get better over night like in the movies or in fairytales. Now not all pit bulls seized from a dog fighting ring are fighting dogs and not all of them are bait dogs, the only pit bulls they use as bait dogs are the ones who are more interested in acting like a normal dog; friendly and loyal. Dog fighters hate dogs that are friendly, playful and loyal so that’s why they use those dogs as bait dogs. Now I’m not so sure about Mel but from the video I saw of him he appears to be alright, they just need to neuter him.
“Sleeps in bed with them.... LOL They don't know xxx can be a trigger for pits?”
I pray to God you do not have any pets what so ever. What makes you think they have intercourse while the dog is in bed with them? You sound like the type of person who likes to have sex with animals and that’s just beyond repulsive. You’re worse than a pedophile. Whoever you are you are a sick, twisted sorry excuse of a human.
Would you condone killing a person who has suffered from a psychological trauma?
ReplyDeleteYou are obviously not an expert on the subject and should keep your mouth shut on topics you know nothing about.
Stephanie, You are obviously a little girl. you are comparing a human being to a dog which is disgusting and offensive.
ReplyDeleteTake your own advice and grow up.
