these people dont really have a lot they can say except for the lame and repugnant lies and excuses they find on the internet. when faced with victims and others who know what they are talking about , you dont say " shit happens " because we know that already and shit is a good name for all of it , the dogs , their owners and what together they do . meals , it too was a real eye-opener for me to find out what pit-owners , defenders had to say for themselves .

the operative word here is CAN which means it first starts with the discretion of the police who seem more than willing to not pursue charges most of the time. it is a real shame that we can not have mandatory arrest charges (like we do in domestic violence calls) for certain attacks like children in the home of grippers, assaults on seniors and docile guide dogs. there is no way that even the most clever nutter lawyers like steven wise could spin an attack on a guide dog back onto the guide dog or its blind owner.

Dawn, I'm certain that you've already done this but I've not seen it. Do you have a list of all the "triggers" enumerated by pitiots following an "accident "? I remember pillows and ladders. I think that combined with the "set up to fail" situations exclusive to bulldogs would be epic. I've owned dogs for over 10 years and there were a few occasions I mistakenly left someone not familiar with them alone with my dog(s). When I got back I'm not sure who was more relieved to see me.
Needless to say, there were no nanny dog lock-on fight to the death mauling incidents. My dog(s) were merely agitated and confused which only led to some displays of nervousness from them towards my guest.

The pit bull in my puppy class (not playing with my dog anymore) is growing fast. It needed 3 time outs during play time because it gets locked on target. I don't understand the people who adopted it. They went looking for a Lab and they were told this mutant was a lab/boxer. It's obvious now that it is a pit bull. Why did they keep it? They have two younger children who they wanted a Lab for. Now they have something could kill their kids. I don't get it. When it can't get to another dog, it redirects onto the person holding it. Sure, it's little puppy teeth and it's mostly just mouthing now, but ugh.
April, yeah she made a point of saying how she wasn't biased and that it was "stupid owners". Obviously I disagree. Since it isn't playing with my puppy, I am using the opportunity to study "good pibble owners" in the wild. These people are doing the right stuff - early socialization, training, not naming it Chaos or Killer - but the pit is still acting on its genes and if anything has gotten worse since the day it showed up. I think this dog will probably end up back in the shelter system when it hits maturity. These people needed a Lab. I can tell they feel like they are in over their heads, but pride or something else keeps them going. They are figuring out that it's not all butterfly farts and rainbows in pit bull land, but they will stick with it because they are "good owners". Right, if the pittie is acting out then they must be doing something wrong and perhaps more bellyrubs will fix the problem.

April, the instructor will pick the pit up and give it a "time out" when it starts locking on, so she seems to know what is going on. I can tell because it goes into a direct stare mode, and the other puppies start reacting to it. I am convinced that most pit owners really think the other dog "started it" because they are oblivious to the forced eye contact that sends normal dogs into protection mode. Unfortunately, these owners are not picking up on the signs either. Puppy class is 5 weeks. What happens when the class is over? :/
I just realized that I only shared this with Dawn, and I thought to myself, "Self, this is just too good to not share with the other haterz." I bet you thought there was nothing that nutters could do to surprise you anymore. Well, prepare to be shocked and appalled.
I know right? What a relief. Gotta love all the "SO CUTE!" high fives. This bad parent earned enough street cred with the pibble pushers to last for years. Unless the pit eats the baby, in which case they will throw her under the bus for letting the pit near the baby. What a wacky world.
OD, the bulldog pup is already locking eyes? At that young an age he's likely to crack off very quickly. You may get to witness him doing more than "play fighting ". Dogs practice as pups what their breeding directs them to do. Sure all puppies tussle with one another in play but they DON'T take a hold. If it's already doing this make sure you've got someone with a camera standing by (an a break stick wouldn't be a bad idea).
Oh yeah! He was 9 weeks old when I first saw him and he got into two fights with another male puppy - teeth and snarling - and had to be separated. The other puppy was afraid of him and would go into defensive posturing when the pit would stare. Some rescue pulled the old Boxer/Lab switcheroo on these people. It's all pit bull, and a dead game little bugger it seems.
When I see bad/dangerous dog behavior, especially pit bulls, I usually just ask, "What's wrong with your dog?" I either get a nasty look or a shrug and a smile, maybe a request for help.
Pit nutters hate when I ask that question. Never got a smile from a pit nutter with that question. LOL!
OD, next time the pit bull pup does that, just ask them what's wrong with their dog. LOL!
You'll only know if one's game by putting something bigger, tougher and rougher on him that'll put him on his back and keep him there. If he's willing to scratch after being beat to shit for a while you can maybe call him game. What he is is a hot pup that really ought to be euthanized before the problems start. The adopters are obviously trying to do all the right things and have made a commitment to the dog. Those are high positive signs in owners, to bad they got suckered on the dog. Nothing they do can change the little bulldog into "not a bulldog" and that's really sad. A complete waste of people who would be excellent owners of a normal dog.
They do have him playing with a much larger dog now and he got put on his back more than a few times. He never got a chance to lock on today because one of the trainers was hovering the entire time (thankfully) and would pick him up as soon as he started to lock. That happened 3 times that I saw. The one time the owner pulled him away, he chewed on her arm in frustration. That worried me. Just puppy teeth - for now. So he didn't manage to progress to fighting, but he tried more times this week. What sucks is these people would have been a great home for any normal dog - like the Lab they wanted. But some stupid rescue has to lie and pawn off an unwanted pit bull and they may never trust a rescue again. I know I'd be pissed as hell. This is why I think rescues like this need to be sued into the ground when one of their "Boxer/Labs" goes berzerk.
I could agree more OD. When these assholes start getting hit hard in the wallet this will stop. These people should have been able to get what they wanted, they sound as if they would have given that right dog a great home. When the large dog the bulldog is now playing with gets him down how does he react? Does he attempt to escalate? And he's at this point redirecting on the owners? Do they think this is normal canine behavior? Have the trainers said nothing? I realize my background makes all of this just too obvious to me but really any trainer if not owner should see this behavior as aberrational, especially in a puppy.
A few posts up you'll see the only comment the instructor made was to make sure they knew she wasn't prejudiced against pit bulls. No one tells them why their puppy is the only one who gets picked up and held for several minutes untIl it calms down. The pit attempts to escalate which is why they were all hovering and watching him like a hawk. None of the other dogs get this level of scrutiny, but hey everything is cool because the trainer isn't biased. No one, starting with the rescue, has been honest with this family.
What a shame. Well intentioned people trying to do everything right and no one clues them in. They'll be horrified and saddened when this little time bomb finally goes off for real and everyone will be slamming them, especially the nutter community. Maybe they should receive an anonymous heads up letter advising them in advance that it's not their fault, they will have done nothing wrong, it's just genetics.
Sometimes the best way to out a pit nutter is to regurgitate the same crap pit nutters do.
Orangedog, you can always throw in some pit nutter quotes as questions to the trainer. Maybe the trainer will refer your questions to a pit bull expert, you know, a vet tech.
Another thing, I think it should be mandated that any kennel or rescue who deal with pit bulls needs to have a panic alarm system to prevent any nanny dog fight to the death tragic accidents. They also need to have video cameras so I can watch nanny dogs doing the nanny thing on Youtube.
I still remember watching this Brazilian video on Youtube where the pit bull owner gets nannified by his pit bull dog. I did learn something from watching that video. Human blood contrasts very well on white concrete and the Brazilian sun will bake the blood into the concrete.

I knew it applied to the nutters (Crosby, Toellner, Delise, et al) that explain away all pit attacks by creating a tangled web of contributing factors that simply aren't predictive for other breeds. Basically, their schtick is to state "this tragedy could've been avoided if the owner and everyone else involved was perfectly responsible, clairvoyant, and able to run out all combinations of various scenarios in their mind prior to the incident. therefore, it is not about the breed."

ReplyDeleteRegarding Captain Hindsight. Who could predict picking up a pillow would trigger a pit bull to attack its owner and after a struggle the roommate finally shoots it in the middle of the living room floor. Doubt even Captain Hindsight would have seen that one. Yes, it's happened. LOL!
I have to admit, I wish there was a Youtube video of that kill or be killed nanny dog struggle.
The pit bull in my puppy class (not playing with my dog anymore) is growing fast. It needed 3 time outs during play time because it gets locked on target. I don't understand the people who adopted it. They went looking for a Lab and they were told this mutant was a lab/boxer. It's obvious now that it is a pit bull. Why did they keep it? They have two younger children who they wanted a Lab for. Now they have something could kill their kids. I don't get it.

April, yeah she made a point of saying how she wasn't biased and that it was "stupid owners". Obviously I disagree. Since it isn't playing with my puppy, I am using the opportunity to study "good pibble owners" in the wild. These people are doing the right stuff - early socialization, training, not naming it Chaos or Killer - but the pit is still acting on its genes and if anything has gotten worse since the day it showed up. I think this dog will probably end up back in the shelter system when it hits maturity. These people needed a Lab. I can tell they feel like they are in over their heads, but pride or something else keeps them going. They are figuring out that it's not all butterfly farts and rainbows in pit bull land, but they will stick with it because they are "good owners". Right, if the pittie is acting out then they must be doing something wrong and perhaps more bellyrubs will fix the problem.

ReplyDeleteApril, the instructor will pick the pit up and give it a "time out" when it starts locking on, so she seems to know what is going on. I can tell because it goes into a direct stare mode, and the other puppies start reacting to it. I am convinced that most pit owners really think the other dog "started it" because they are oblivious to the forced eye contact that sends normal dogs into protection mode. Unfortunately, these owners are not picking up on the signs either. Puppy class is 5 weeks. What happens when the class is over? :/

OD, the bulldog pup is already locking eyes? At that young an age he's likely to crack off very quickly. You may get to witness him doing more than "play fighting ". Dogs practice as pups what their breeding directs them to do. Sure all puppies tussle with one another in play but they DON'T take a hold. If it's already doing this make sure you've got someone with a camera standing by (an a break stick wouldn't be a bad idea).
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! He was 9 weeks old when I first saw him and he got into two fights with another male puppy - teeth and snarling - and had to be separated. The other puppy was afraid of him and would go into defensive posturing when the pit would stare. Some rescue pulled the old Boxer/Lab switcheroo on these people. It's all pit bull, and a dead game little bugger it seems.

ReplyDeleteWhen I see bad/dangerous dog behavior, especially pit bulls, I usually just ask, "What's wrong with your dog?" I either get a nasty look or a shrug and a smile, maybe a request for help.

You'll only know if one's game by putting something bigger, tougher and rougher on him that'll put him on his back and keep him there. If he's willing to scratch after being beat to shit for a while you can maybe call him game. What he is is a hot pup that really ought to be euthanized before the problems start. The adopters are obviously trying to do all the right things and have made a commitment to the dog. Those are high positive signs in owners, to bad they got suckered on the dog. Nothing they do can change the little bulldog into "not a bulldog" and that's really sad. A complete waste of people who would be excellent owners of a normal dog.
ReplyDeleteThey do have him playing with a much larger dog now and he got put on his back more than a few times. He never got a chance to lock on today because one of the trainers was hovering the entire time (thankfully) and would pick him up as soon as he started to lock. That happened 3 times that I saw. The one time the owner pulled him away, he chewed on her arm in frustration. That worried me. Just puppy teeth - for now. So he didn't manage to progress to fighting, but he tried more times this week.
ReplyDeleteWhat sucks is these people would have been a great home for any normal dog - like the Lab they wanted. But some stupid rescue has to lie and pawn off an unwanted pit bull and they may never trust a rescue again. I know I'd be pissed as hell. This is why I think rescues like this need to be sued into the ground when one of their "Boxer/Labs" goes berzerk.
I could agree more OD. When these assholes start getting hit hard in the wallet this will stop. These people should have been able to get what they wanted, they sound as if they would have given that right dog a great home. When the large dog the bulldog is now playing with gets him down how does he react? Does he attempt to escalate? And he's at this point redirecting on the owners? Do they think this is normal canine behavior? Have the trainers said nothing? I realize my background makes all of this just too obvious to me but really any trainer if not owner should see this behavior as aberrational, especially in a puppy.

ReplyDeleteA few posts up you'll see the only comment the instructor made was to make sure they knew she wasn't prejudiced against pit bulls. No one tells them why their puppy is the only one who gets picked up and held for several minutes untIl it calms down. The pit attempts to escalate which is why they were all hovering and watching him like a hawk. None of the other dogs get this level of scrutiny, but hey everything is cool because the trainer isn't biased. No one, starting with the rescue, has been honest with this family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame. Well intentioned people trying to do everything right and no one clues them in. They'll be horrified and saddened when this little time bomb finally goes off for real and everyone will be slamming them, especially the nutter community. Maybe they should receive an anonymous heads up letter advising them in advance that it's not their fault, they will have done nothing wrong, it's just genetics.

ReplyDeleteOrangedog, you can always throw in some pit nutter quotes as questions to the trainer. Maybe the trainer will refer your questions to a pit bull expert, you know, a vet tech.
Another thing, I think it should be mandated that any kennel or rescue who deal with pit bulls needs to have a panic alarm system to prevent any nanny dog fight to the death tragic accidents. They also need to have video cameras so I can watch nanny dogs doing the nanny thing on Youtube.
I still remember watching this Brazilian video on Youtube where the pit bull owner gets nannified by his pit bull dog. I did learn something from watching that video. Human blood contrasts very well on white concrete and the Brazilian sun will bake the blood into the concrete.
