preaching to the choir

preaching to the choir provides the best of both worlds. you can safely thump your superior enlightened chest atop your high horse without ever exposing yourself to criticism and ridicule. plus there is the added benefit of remaining eligible for handouts from OLD MONEY BAGS BERKEY.

i wish DIANE JESSUP and her minions would put just a little effort into educating the public and their fellow pit bull zealots.

TATONKA is one of my favorite contributors. her mantra is "reach one teach one".

her goal is too damn low. aim for the sky ladies! ya just nevah know what you can accomplish until you try!

GREAT advice from Pete Sparks, circa 1961

by BoldogKennel » April 23rd, 2014, 3:40 am

In this day and age of Cesar Milan urging you to take Spike to the dog park, and some rescue groups telling you to put your pit bulldogs into "play groups" at the shelter, well, what is really needed is a good old fashion dose of EXPERIENCED COMMON SENSE!
(isn't it cute how jessup singles out cesar?)

Pete Sparks, love him or hate him, had his hands on a LOT of dogs. And a lot of good dogs. He usually had a couple dozen (at least) at his house. He didn't match them, but he did breed some that were, and he himself was present at all the major fights for several decades. He reported these in the magazine Your Friend and Mine for many years.

If nothing else, he knew pit bulldogs. And how to respect and manage them. Here is some advice, written in 1961 by a subscriber of the magazine and reprinted by Pete. Just think how much bad PR the breed could have avoided if this kind of common sense had been "mainstream" instead of only in an "underground" magazine. Of course, I guess the point of his article is that even when the information IS available, people just think they know better... Nothing changes!

ATTENTION PIT NUTTERS: if you want a real education about your precious gripper, head on over to JESSUP'S forum. pay special attention to TATONKA. she knows her stuff. sure, their masks of sanity occasionally slip, but their honesty is refreshing. you will find some of the most knowledgeable people on the interwebs to help guide you with your purpose bred dog. you will be an expert at managing mutant DNA in no time.

and tell them CRAVEN sent you!

They aren't interested in any info that doesn't make them feel like precious rescue angels or tough guys that know it all.

I have no idea why anyone would want to keep these type of dogs around, they are made for a task that has been banned for near a century, FFS. If only those types kept them, I would be less concerned.

I prefer a full on ban and s/n to extinction, but it makes no sense for these breed advocates to be so against regulations that keep their beloved out of the hands of evil and stupid people. And out of shelters. I have no idea why they don't push for BSL with a limited number of "registered owners", and allowed dogs, obviously kept in conditions that protect the public.

Dog fighting is such a horrific endeavor, IMO because of the abuse of other animals they use as bait, and for training. Add in all the other criminal stuff, and you see why it has to be illegal and rooted out. Why people are supporting those that do this stuff is beyond me. (oh right, they are insane)

Just reading over the forum makes me want to puke. And if Totanka is as good as it gets, we are in trouble.

It's going to be one hell of a job, marrying the fur-mommy to the dog-fighting man, but somewhere between that unlikely union lies the answer to the Pit Bull problem.

The metaphorical 'child' of such a union SHOULD be a better type of Pit Bull owner than ever seen before. One that embraces the history of the dog, enjoys its ability to be dual-natured and an affectionate dog, but who totally embraces the boiling and joyous blood of the bred-for-purpose gladiatorial canine. A dog UNLIKE ALL OTHERS, and not MEANT to be like any other.

The sad simpletons who own these gripping dogs nowadays, those who drip on about them being 'Nanny dogs' and 'Baby sitters', who view them as the same as any other dog breed, who dress them up in tutus and scarves, who permit them in the bedrooms of children, who claim them to be excellent service or therapy dogs... these kinds of people are the downfall of the dogs themselves. And there will BE a downfall - the dogs aren't padding quietly alongside the fur mommies; they aren't doing what the fur mommies WANT them to do; they aren't being nice... they aren't PLAYING nice. They are being Pit Bulls, and they just can't help themselves. The dogs provide their own downfall in a modern setting. The bored, brightly-burning, misunderstood, underestimated and highly dangerous Sport dog - languishing in the laps of sick protectionists and deluded doggy freaks.

All roads lead to the pit and the ring, the sleepy needle or the cop's gun,the river of blood flows downhill and it is accumulating in stinking pools over the graves of hundreds of innocent people, pets, livestock and wildlife.

It's all solvable, of course, but first we need to arrange a marriage. A marriage founded on honesty, with the bride wearing sackcloth and an air of penitence, and the groom stepping out of the past with a keen eye, a cull list and a desire to finish what he started.

And the bridesmaids? We'll have two. A pair of sport dogs, muzzled and sterile, short-leashed and micro-chipped - they go home with the newly-married couple to containment par excellence, for THIS couple know they are what they are, and what they are is their Past, their Present and their Forever.

Ferocity incarnate, housed in a handsome carapace of muscle and shining fur, garnished with a 1000 watt smile full of killing teeth, the tail that thrashes in joy AND in the bringing of death, eyes that soften with love towards a child but can roll in ecstasy as the same infant's red blood flows. The dog unlike any other dog.

The Pit Bull Dog who has lost his pit, but not his yearning for it.

Joanie knows her stuff on bulldogs. Bert had some of the very best dogs from the really old blood. The public image they now cultivate has little in common with the reality from back in the day. Bert was not only known for great pit dogs but for being a liar of Carver magnitude lol. The greats of the day used/bred his dogs just as they did Maurice's, he just didn't have MC's style or charisma.

Dawn, Play groups?! WTF! Has someone really been that stupid?

yep stupid. and that be cesar milan along with ledy vankavage, donna reynolds and of course JANE BERKEY.

Da Ninja; I hope your writing talent has exposure in professional venues. If this isn't the case, it should be. I've participated in various forums over the years that included professionals who would have difficulty matching your elegance in the craft.

So what the hell was I going to say about the blog article before I was dazzled? What was it?

Screw it. I give up! (lol) Give me a pass this time so I can kick back and enjoy the awesomeness of this blog and its participants. Sometimes I feel like I accidentally walked into a consortium of hand picked talent. What a contrast to the cesspools of stupidity in pro pit venues.

Lol, the only bulldog "play dates" I'm familiar with are called rolls.

RSM, it isn't just the rescue angels. It's the AKC prizes too.

Remember that photo of AKC pit bull breeder and NAIA star, who also went around pushing animal control departments into doing her bidding, Holly Stump in Ipswich Mass proseletyzing against BSL by getting her local paper to do some photo ops of her taking a pit bull into a nursing home and lifting the clearly freaked dog up and shoving it in the face of a very elderly, unsuspecting, possibly Alzheimer's patient?

The breeders are all for this same stuff.

It seems like it is only the dog fighters that have a brain and understand their dogs and that pits ain't pets

Damn Da Ninja.
I kept CnP parts of your comment to highlight for its sheer awesomeness, but I ended up choosing the whole thing. I will just pick my very favorite part:

"The bored, brightly-burning, misunderstood, underestimated and highly dangerous Sport dog - languishing in the laps of sick protectionists and deluded doggy freaks.

All roads lead to the pit and the ring, the sleepy needle or the cop's gun, the river of blood flows downhill and it is accumulating in stinking pools over the graves of hundreds of innocent people, pets, livestock and wildlife. "

No one has said it better, in such a brief, exquisite description. (I would add "the vigilant victims knives" after the cops gun, LOL.)

I DO think you are underestimating one thing- MOST of these nutters DO know what kind of animal they have. They may hide it, deny it, lie in public, or think they can train/love it away, but make no mistake- they ENJOY a pits ability to kill.

Even when they think their personal pibble is sweet, and great for kids, the fact that it is a breed known to be the fiercest of fighters is a point of pride. Amongst themselves, all but the most naive fur mommies will trade stories of "impressive viciousness" with glee. They like intimidating others, even when they whine about "oppression"

No one in their right mind would do these things with a pit bull if they really cared about the 'reputation of the breed'...
-pretend it had some special ability as a 'nanny dog'
-turn one loose in a dog park
-adopt one to an inexperienced dog owner.
-adopt one to a young mother with a baby, toddler, or both.
-seek out fight bust dogs, or dogs that have mauled a human or killed an animal, rename them, and ship them the communities everywhere.

I have far more respect for the dogmen than the nutters. They knew the nature of these beasts and didn't LIE about it.

Exactly. And they didn't stand by helplessly when one of their maulers clamped onto someone, they de-clamped the dog.

TATONKA KENNELS - Joanie Winchester

http://www.ampitbull.com/bio-j.htm

"I HAVE BEEN VERY fortunate in my life. When I was about 18 years old, I owned a number of large breeds and did a fair bit of A.K.C. and Rare Breed showing.

I laid my eyes on my first American Pit Bull Terrier when I was picking up a Mastiff. The little dog was Shivar's Toddy, a son of ***** Cotton's Bullet *****.

I had to have one, then two then I BOUGHT THE ENTIRE YARD (really?). I ate drank and slept dogs. The phone bill was ungodly.

I spoke with all the greats, Maurice Carver, Ralph Greenwood, Howard Heinzl, Andrew Giroux, Jack Boellard, Don Maloney and Irish Jerry to name a few, and most of them really did their best to help me.

Here's Cotton's Bullet, a direct descendent of Cotten's Reno. The notes on this dog's pedigree refer to dog fighting. They don't even attemt to hide it.

Registered Name: COTTON'S BULLET
Kennel:
Sire: COTTON'S RENO
Dam: THIBODEAUX' RUDY
create: e.ketty
last modified: zuro1982

Notes:
THIS DOG CAN NOT BE A GR CH, BEING AS HE LOST TWO. PICKED UP AND BOUGHT AFTER MAKING A GAME SCRATCH. IT'S SAID HE HAD WON 4 MATCHES IN ONE DAY. VERY SOLID BULLDOG.

I am sure all the "greats" she names are all dog fighters. Disgusting.

And this lame ass disclaimer...but they refer to dog fighters as "great".

http://www.ampitbull.com/about.htm

"TATONKA KENNELS will not knowingly sell a dog to anyone involved in the cruel sport of dog fighting."

And more bullshit

"WE ARE TATONKA KENNELS, located in Northwest Florida. We're Pleased to offer you the finest of ***** professional quality ***** dogs, at a price you can afford."

Pure scum. I'm shocked at how openly and casually some people talk about dog fighting.

We need to get that couple married NOW!

Yesterday, i saw a pit bull.

THEN some chick was sporting a shirt about 'saving america's dog' which means pit bulls (it said). of course, she had a stroller.

hopefully, that chick and that bull dog don't really live here. but, this isn't the kind of place people specifically visit.

people around here still like to walk and let their kids play outside.

Mom in Eugene said...

Im sure they moved in. You don't get a safe place for your kids to play, you have to deal with the threat of pits everywhere. Don'tcha know- Its their RIGHT to do what they want, even if that means no one else can do anything but hide in their homes, or walk around with a .45cal.

My kids free play has been curtailed to when I can helicopter them, armed, because there is now a super aggressive pit, with an owner just as aggressive, 5' from the playground and 3 doors down. I am not a helicopter parent at all, but this psycho purposely walked his mauler up to my kids after I asked him not too (yes, a fight ensued). Until he is evicted, its paranoid city. The mauler is huge, and already snarling, lunging at kids, and being aggressive- at 9 mo……

Those people that worship dog fighters are as sick as they are, and I would bet most of them are also fighters. If they aren't directly, they sure breed dogs for the pit, which is just as despicable.

I hope they ALL get killed by their monsters, and I hope all rude ass pit owners get their arms ripped off and face disfigured- but I want them to live as an example.

Mom in Eugene, I believe I recall what you said about that crazy guy and his mauler. Didn't his mauler attack another dog right in front of your kids and some other little kids?

The houses closest to me have the same people and the same pets (or no pets). But, I've heard that SAME house that had the bulldog that almost attacked me and my mother now has TWO mean dogs. IDK what kind of dogs. They have a fence, but it looks awfully similar to the one that stupid bulldog (more like a pit bull with an underbite, not the fat wheezy kind) managed to get free of ten times a day years ago. That bulldog is long dead by now. It's just weird that this one house attracts people with mean dogs.

I don't know of any house in my neighborhood that has any kind of fence that could contain a pit bull. And most of us have no fence. I saw the mauler on the other side of the highway, so maybe we have the highway between us.

But, if we have a rescue angel in our midst, that won't be enough... Because it won't be that one mutant, too many other put upon mutants need saving.

I know that back in the day, quite a few dogs got poisoned. What happened to me and my mother wasn't the only weird thing. But, in that case, the dog was known so people could tell that guy to contain his dog better (which he did, afaik). But, there were some dogs literally torn apart in the middle of the night most of whom were very close to home... And a friend of mine got bitten and had to get rabies shots...

So, a bunch of dogs mysteriously dropped dead. Not every dog that was loose, so this makes me think they had a good idea which dogs to go after. They weren't all bulldogs, but they'd gotten in a pack and were mean to anyone except their owners.

I knew someone whose dog died in the whatever they did. He said something had happened that made people feel they had no other choice. Then he just buried his dog. I wonder if he figured it had to have been running in that pack... It wasn't a bulldog, but it was a big dog. I was a kid, so I wasn't given too many details.

Yesterday, on a bike ride, after saying "PASSING" twice to a small female with a pit bull, she barely moved over on the trail because she was on the phone. I so wanted to scream as I was passing, but my son pointed out that I would probably be attacked by said pit bull.

I've lost count of how many pit bulls I've seen on that trail in the last year. It's terrible!

Mom sick to death of deadly nutters said...

Anon-
That particular mauler, that attacked a real service animal, and his nutter moved about 3-5 days after the incident. IDK if they kicked the dog out or he just left. And I don't care.

This mauler I am talking about here is 3 doors down, which is 8 parking spots from my door to his. His sliding door opens to the playground and is not even 10' from the slide.

This mauler is VERY aggressive. As is the owner. I had it out with him, and the other neighbors came out to yell at him too. He said he does not care if his dog is dangerous, and other nasty things.

Today I found out he has been seen at dog fights. IDK if that mauler fights, but based on his looks, I would not be surprised.

SO, we have a GAME BRED, FIGHTING MUTANT in a building with many small kids and cats. OH yeah, he moved in his grandkids last month, and they are 1 and 5yrs old….

AND HE IS ALLOWED TO HAVE THIS FIGHTING DOG BECAUSE HE BOUGHT SERVICE ANIMAL PAPERS ONLINE.

I am thinking of contacting the company that sold the fake papers (he showed them to me) and letting them know that they sold to a dog fighter, and we will pursue him if the fighting dog attacks. They didn't check him out, just sent him the verification which allowed him to live here, so I can see a case made. If nothing else, maybe the case could be made in the public eye. Anger will follow.

If they could revoke those papers, he would be out that day. I would love to shut some of those shops down.

Anonymous said...

Couldn't he be turned in as a dog fighter? It's a felony! And there must be a fighting ring, so it seems an enterprising detective could follow the brightly attired mutant to the dog fights. This guy is probably not the only one passing off a game bred (or what passes for it) mutant as a 'service animal'.

I am glad the other unstable individual took his mauler and fled. I know that makes him and it someone else's problem, but it sounds like you have your hands full. Also, you had that awful encounter with one of those animals, so you deserve a break.

If fighting dogs are caught with service vests than whichever company provided those vest and papers will surely be caught out in fraud. Even the most naive person in the universe with the most romantic notion of the goodness of wiggle butts has to know that a fighting dog is not a service animal. Oh, they might be able to do a few things for their owners. But, they cannot be trusted out in public around a variety of people.

It is terrible that some mauler attacked a real service dog. There are many that work hard at taking care of their human and maintain a gentle demeanor with the public.

Although, TBH, IDK if a fighting pit bull is any different than a regular pit bull. (Maybe Tropical Storms would know this?) It seems they are the exact same dogs, it's just a question of whether of not anyone has actually put them in a fight. But, maybe there is a difference...

However, these dogs are VERY competitive. I am starting to believe coddling them is the worst thing. I have seen some people are using them in non-violent competitions that still allow them to compete with and possibly defeat another dog (basically dog sports, I guess). Maybe these kind of things can substitute for fighting and give the dogs an outlet so they're not losing their minds all over the place. This would also attract a different kind of owner so it might help the general public in a roundabout way.
