Osh Gosh

rip Osh Gosh

salina, kansas Osh Gosh passed away in his sleep Friday night. He was about 13 years old. He saved 4 year old Caitlyn Forsberg's life in May 2004. The neighbor's two pit bulls got into Caitlyn's backyard and attacked her as she played. Caitlyn was able to escape when Osh Gosh came to her defense.
Her mauling led to a pit bull ban in Salina. Animal control records show there were 24 pit bull bites in 2003-2004, 5 pit bull bites from 2005-2008 and zero pit bulls bites from 2009-2010.
Osh Gosh was a special dog. He will be missed.

Nothing is more noble than a dog defending a child against a pit bull attack. Without Osh Gosh, this little girl would likely have perished.

RIP Osh Gosh.

RIP Osh Gosh,

Osh Gosh is the essence of a dog is. Loyal, heroic, protective and true. He not only saved his girl's life, but he was there for her through her recovery and the memory of that trauma will forever be blunted by her memories of her hero companion.

I'm so glad Osh Gosh got to live a long and happy life. He truly deserved it. I'm so glad that the town paper saw fit to remember him, his heroic deeds, and the legacy for the town of Salina.

But...but...BSL doesn't work. Except statistics in places that have bans show over and over again that it does. Zero pit bites from 2009-2010. You'll never see that anywhere without a ban.

It's a shame this dog had to become a hero in such a way, but it's good that he lived his natural life span and helped a little girl to go on her way to do the same.

The ordinance has made a difference, she said. Records at the Salina Animal Shelter indicate there were 24 reported pit bull bites in 2003 and 2004, and only five since -- none from 2009 to present."

"We definitely haven't had the severity of bites that we had in the past," Base said."

I'm so glad the last part was included. When the number of pit bull attacks is reduced, the overall severity of bites is reduced.

What a sweet boy he was. He is the perfect example of what a dog should be.

I think all towns should work to ban pit bulls. Salina should be very proud. RIP Osh Gosh - you changed many lives as well as an entire town! Good Boy!

I'm highly impressed he took on two pit bulls with no one to aid him and survived it. He must have had the heart of a lion. As someone else said...Good Boy!

No gyms are needed at the Rainbow Bridge.

I don't get it. Roflmao? I know what it means, but why? I don't understand any of this in the context of this story.

Is this just to be mean?

Petty pit nutters hate goldens. That's what it means.

Anonymous said...

Nutters are so "special ed". Remember that? The kids that wound up in those "special" classes in school.

That is why Anon 5:12pm does not get it.

There are no "special" schools in life so we all must just "school" them!

Thank Dog we have canines like Osh Gosh. This dog has more intelligence in one paw pad than any NUTTER!

Remember the movie old teller? Yep he got shot just like all dogs should be

Anonymous said...

Nope, I've never seen any movie called "Old Teller". I'm not surprised. Bank employees usually aren't that interesting.

"Here, Teller, come back Teller! My bank account is a mess."

Well, it's obvious we have a troll here. This person might be one or more pit nutter(s), could be someone once sympathetic to the blog's purpose, or some other category. Regardless, their presence disrupts the purpose of the blog and the ability to comment and read comments by other stable people. The troll will now attack me, but I am not pervious to their opinion. Of course I am interested in Craven's and non-troll perspectives on this, but I suggest everyone ignore the troll, and they will go away. I doubt any troll has been reasoned with before, that is not their game. And they cannot be out cursed or out done in any part of their game because they feed on it. To further the goal of troll identification, I will only post now using my blogger id.

Hah keep thinking I like shitbulls. I hate all dogs. All dogs are threats are you forgetting there all wild animals

RETREIVERMAN said...

how can they be all wild animals, you ignoramus? humans are more hate worthy by far and as much or more of a threat, all things considered.

Wow, the Retrieverman of the blog?

But you love pit bulls. Don't you? At least it seems that way when I have read your blog (if it is your blog).

I'm interested because I find people that love dogs yet also love pit bulls, which were (as you obviously know) bred specifically to kill other dogs, very difficult to understand.

I'm with DubV. Let's just honor Osh Gosh's memory and don't feed the troll(s). They thrive on getting attention.

Where did dogs originated from? There wild animals. Why don't you just but a "pet" tiger while your at it

If I were Craven this would have me thinking about moderating comments. The signal to noise ratio has gotten really bad the past few days.

why arent you awake craven? you have no job you shouldnt be sleeping so early!!!

Ban pit bulls in your County. It is really not that hard. Take a petition to your city counsel.

Then, the pit/shit bulls can be killed at your local pound. Most pounds love to put them down. It gives room to the other deserving strays that have a chance of adoption.

I know for a fact that when a pit/shit bull comes into a pound in my county, it goes right to the chamber!

Nightie night shit bull.

Jake, comment moderation may be very time consuming. If I knew the troll's ISP address, I would just block it. Or require people to comment only through a blogger id that can be blocked. Who knows, you wait a few days and these guys will likely get bored. It is important to never directly address them or answer any of their questions. It is fine to talk about them amongst ourselves though, like they are kids in a room overhearing an adult conversation.

Yes, that's a troll being disrespectful and irrelevant for their own disruptive purposes. Ignore the "special ed" comment. I suspect our troll deliberately misinterpreted the question while trying to appear anti pit bull through their use of the word “nutter.” That strategy is part of a troll's game – attempting to divide and alienate participants is straight from the troll’s play book.

The consequence of this disruption is the only place on the internet where pit bull advocates are allowed to debate their perspective with public safety advocates is diminished. This blog is antagonistic towards the larger body of pit bull advocates – not just for the content, but because pit advocates are used to controlling information through manipulation, limitation, or outright blocking of opposing views. Craven’s blog is the one place these discussions can occur, but the honest disclosures about pit bulls are so detrimental to the pit bull advocacy that trolls have arrived and operate under a variety of identities to disrupt and distract from conversations about the central issues. Honest, open and fair discussion is not part of their agenda. It was just a matter of time until this tactic arrived at this blog.

Statements like, ‘I don’t like any dogs; I’m a cat person, but I’m a cat person who likes to make inane comments in forums about pit bulls,’ is woefully transparent. Take it for what it is – an angry pit bull advocate that understands they don’t have the intellectual capacity to participate in honest debate. The best they can hope for is to be divisive and disruptive.

i don't think this is the retrieverman blogger

I'm with Dude. They could not dismiss our points, so now they are doing this. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that after some blog pages on high profile figures/events (including one related to the Aryan Bro.) that a participant showed up that tried to inject racials undertones and use the "n-word" multiple times (and I don't mean nutter).

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

i agree with the signal to noise ratio. i don't mind criticism, i don't mind insults but incoherent nonsense is a waste of time and band width.

Thanks for updating this with a picture of the child's injuries. Too often nutters try to ignore the very real damage these dogs do and paint it as nothing more than a "bite". No rational human being could look at that child's face and minimize or ridicule what happened to her or what Osh Gosh accomplished that day. As for the irrational ones, they just make themselves look ridiculous and callous when they do.

i slapped this blog post together quickly while working on the jonny justice bullshit and i forgot to put caitlyn's photo in! better late than never.
