Canadian journalists - doing it right!

Whether the medium is fiction or non-fiction, romancing wolves is never a culturally innocent pursuit. Civilization is but a membrane over darker impulses mutinous psyches can displace onto animals with impunity. Our dogs are our social, psychological — and sometimes our ideological — avatars. Consider the dogs you love; then consider yourself.

"In their unconditional love for PBs — there are apparently more PB advocacy organizations than for all other specific breeds combined — denialists all quote each other’s baseless statements in an endless loop, and parrot the same Manchurian-candidates mantras: “My PB may lick you to death”; “all dogs bite”; “It’s the owner, not the breed”; “the pit bull was the most popular family pet in America.” "

It's become my personal mantra to ask people in the comments sections after these horrible news stories, why, if the pit bull is such a wonderful dog as they say; why does it have so many advocate groups and lobby groups to push it and shill for it? Shouldn't it's greatness speak for itself?

Both pieces are superbly crafted. Barbara Kay is quite the writer. Glad she is on our side! The one about wolves/canines/humans is so well-done that it is flying over the heads of most of the commenters. It is more like a play, an Olde English poem, to be read slowly, and absorbed, and the deeper meaning pondered. And, she is spot on!

Opalina, I love that! I love Barbara Kay, and she condensed some very big ideas into very few words.

And no, the commenters did not get it. And it is quite amazing how intensely they despise her. Dog/Wolf mythology REALLY has many people completely enthralled! Do not diss the dog/wolf!

Thank you! :) I would bet dollars to donuts that the disgruntled commenters have pegged her as a "hater," because of her stance on dangerous dogs, and therefore, they will see no good in anything she pens. Most of them probably gather their tomotos in preparation for reading her blog. Cretins ;)

dayna, i like to show up on pit positive stories and ask them how they know it is a pit bull? when people are asking for advice about a difficult pit, i tell them it just needs more love.
