Dear Senate Local Government Committee chair Brian Dansel:

    Please oppose SB 5094! 
   
    If passed,  SB 5094 would prevent Washington cities and towns from effectively preventing fatal and disfiguring dog attacks before they happen,  by preventing communities from adopting legislation pertaining specifically to pit bulls,  pit mixes,  and a few closely related breeds,  cumulatively less than 7% of the U.S. dog population,  but responsible nonetheless for more than 80% of all dog-inflicted fatal and disfiguring injuries.

    We are Washington residents and voters since 1996. 

    I am a journalist and statistician,  working on news beats pertaining to animals,  public health,  and occupational safety for more than 45 years.  My wife Beth is a former police officer,  animal control officer,  veterinary technician,  and pit bull rescuer.

    Since 1982 we have logged and analyzed fatal and disfiguring dog attacks throughout the U.S. and Canada,  more recently adding logs specific to India,  the United Kingdom,  and South Africa.  In every nation the data is strikingly similar:  pit bulls,  pit mixes,  pit variants such as the “American bully,”  and closely related breeds such as the bull mastiff,  Presa Canario,  Dogo Argentino,  and Fila Brasiliero account for 80%-plus of fatal and disfiguring attacks.  This is no surprise,  because historically these breeds have been bred specifically for fighting,  and farther back ancestrally,  to guard slaves and wage war.

    The Best Friends Animal Society,  American Veterinary Medical Association,  and ASPCA introduced their ongoing campaigns to repeal breed-specific legislation between 1992 and 2001.  Note that the numbers of fatal and disfiguring pit bull attacks on humans have been higher in every year since 2002 than in the entire decade 1982-1992.

    The Humane Society of the U.S. joined them in 2008.  Since then,  the total number of pit bulls involved in fatal and disfiguring attacks each year has increased nearly tenfold,  the number of child victims per year is up nearly fivefold,  the number of adult victims per year has increased nearly tenfold,  there were record numbers of fatalities in five out of nine years,  and the number of disfigurements per year has increased eleven times over.

    Again,  please oppose SB 5094!

When Markwell was approached by some of the local color in Forks, WA for a pit bull, he told them, "Don't come around here anymore. Tell your friends the dogs are dangerous, but the owner's worse."

Steve Markwell burst onto the dog rescue scene in 2009 armed with promises, grand pie in the sky plans and a handful of fairy dust to sprinkle into the lattes of gullible rescue angels only to find himself in a heap of legal trouble four years later.

Fast forward to 2015. This week MARKWELL admitted to violating the Charitable Solicitation Act and its Consumer Protection Act. The Washington state dog whisperer and one time speaker on the subject of breed specific legislation at the University of Washington Law School (page 4) in 2012 faces fines totaling $96,000 for 48 violations plus over $20,000 in legal fees after soliciting over $360,000 in donations to his house of horrors charity from 2009 to 2011. The judge could also order MARKWELL to return the money that he duped from fellow no kill kooks. MOMMY!

A few gullible political correct organizations pimped Markwell out and presented him as someone to respect and mimic but only Idea Mensch deleted the piece they ran on Markwell in 2009 (good thing i saved a pdf!). He is still listed as number 32 of 33 entrepreneurs who make this world a better place but his individual spotlight has been purged from their website. You would think that an honest organization would seize the moment to teach people of the dangers of con artists instead of sloppily trying to bury the truth. Even the famous psychopath researcher, Dr. Robert Hare admits that he can be fooled by these creatures.

sundre, alberta 57 yr old RITA PHILLIP sicced her two mutants on 26 yr old Deanna Wolfe. Wolfe suffered life threatening injuries. PHILLIP fled following the attack. she was picked up at a casino, then she missed her first court appearance. on the 29th, the judge denied her bail.

there are allegations of animal cruelty of rescued dogs. current and past employees and volunteers claim that mace and tasers were used on the dogs. they also claim the dogs were kept 19+ hours in their crates. employees state that dog fights broke out and the dogs did not receive veterinary care. that's the problem with keeping dogs that were BRED TO KILL EACH OTHER. there really is NO safe way to house or control them.

Aurora, Colorado attorney GEORGE BROWN is spearheading a citizen initiative to try and make Colorado the first no kill state. ballot initiatives are those public vote thingees that BRENT TOELLNER spoke out against last weekend. and no surprise, there is anti-BSL language in it. i bet TOELLNER is not against this one.

BROWN feels that we are "executing" shelter animals and there has to be a better way. yes, there is. it is called MANDATORY SPAY AND NEUTER! hmmm..i wonder if BROWN has given any thought to the "execution" of the millions of farm animals to feed dogs and cats or the thousands of animals mutilated and "executed" by gripping dogs. but there is hope in the the form of opposition to the initiative. the president of the president of the Colorado Federation of Animal Welfare Agencies, Lisa Pederson questions the initiative's practicality citing among other things, “The amendment will also hinder a shelter’s ability to protect the public from dangerous dogs. That’s a primary part of our function in the community."
WHOA! someone involved in animal welfare is actually expressing concern for the safety of the public. public safety? that's a novel idea!


on january 31st, Vermont democrat David Potter introduced H 775. this bill prohibits local municipalities from banning certain breeds of dogs.

on february 4, Utah democrat Brian S. King introduced HB 97 to prohibit a municipality from enacting or enforcing a breed specific rule, regulation, policy or ordinance about dogs.

Georgia Republicans Knight, Roberts, Burns, Ehrhart and Shaw have introduced HB 409 to prohibit local governments from adopting certain regulations pertaining to animals; limit authority of local governments to establish dog control regulations; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
NO local authority will be able to:
1) require spay and neuter
2)  require higher licensing fees for "animals" not spayed or neutered
3) prevent the ownership, breeding, transfer, purchase, tethering, training or transportation of dogs used for the lawful pursuit of game, field trials, shows or disability services
4) ban the sale or ownership of any specific breed of dog or cat

Maryland HB 422 prohibits the discrimination of dogs based on breed, type or heritage

anti-BSL initiatives are stealthily being introduced in missouri and washington.

in december 2013 Rep Ron Hicks filed HB 1116. it has slowly and quietly gained support but a hearing has not yet been scheduled. the entire bill can be read here.

the following is the witness statement of the heroic man who came to the aid of the victim of the most recent fatal pit bull attack. he was also brutally attacked.

Driving southbound on SR7 from the American Lake VA Hospital I saw a middle aged heavy set woman jumping and screaming for help on the other side and then I saw two dogs mauling something in the ditch. Assuming the worst, her child I veered to the center land, hit the hazards and jumping out bounding across two lanes of heavy traffic at 0900 on October 30th to find two pit bulls mauled a senior Asian woman. This woman was clearly severely injured and unable to defend herself as the two dog had her quartered and ripping arm and leg. Her clothes were already half ripped off and deep lacerations were clearly evident. I immediately start growing, yelling and punching the larger male pit bull in the nose as both dog turned their attack to me. Punching both dogs to lured them into oncoming traffic, I focused my attack on the alpha male and kicked at the female dog to insure both pursued me into traffic to use the passing vehicles as weapons since I was unarmed due to visiting the VA and passing through Joint Base Lewis McChord, Russian Roulette being better than certain death. Unfortunately a white sedan missed me and stopped short of hitting the larger male pit bull. I advanced on the animal taking control pounding its head into the road as the small female got my left upper thigh. Once that female dog locked on my thigh I tried to through the larger male pit bull into the next lane of traffic as a desperate act but the collar broke. I knew I had to stop traffic to get help. When that collar broke I turned my blows to the female's nose to break her locked jaw on my thigh. With success I immediate lunged on to the white sedan that was blocking one lane of traffic to catch my breath and access the situation. The male pit bull got my leather sneaker and was trying to pull me from the hood on the car. I saw cars stopping and a truck driving up the side walk to the woman location and the female dog was back at the old woman again as I kicked the male in the nose. I jumped and run to the ditch for the female dog to get it off the woman again as the male dog pursued me. I laid into the female dog punching and two men approached from different direction to the woman and the truck that came up the side walk. The three men were able to distract the male pit bull as I attacked the female pit again to get it off the victim. The female dog pursue me back into the street as I continued punching hoping the two men and truck driver would be able to keep the larger male dog off me. I shouted orders to the truck driver to run that dog down and kill it while the two men kept it off as I fought the female back into the street. One man was bit by the male dog while I was fighting the female in the middle of the street. Bystanders were approaching and some woman actually screamed at me to leave that dog alone!!!! I was slowing with exhaustion and the male pit bull left the man, truck and victim and came to the female pit bulls aide. In total exhaustion and was unable to counter the attack and the male dog locked onto my right forearm and latched cracking bones and ripping flesh. The cracking of bone was an instant shock and an eternity of hesitation. I punched it nose and pulled to prevent my arm from elbow or shoulder damage as I was taken down. The female bit my left punching fist so I used her head to hit the male dog and break it hold. Only with God's help it worked and I crawled to the hood of the white sedan again with female dog pulling at my feet. Unable to continue severely injured myself, I scrambled to the roof of the car. The pickup driver on the sidewalk in his truck next to the victim fired a personal sidearm as the male pit bull return to the two men and victim. I thank the off duty soldier and promised to bear witness. The inured male dog fled. With the knowledge of backup I scrambled to the victim to access and triage but the female dog returned to me and the victim. I gave orders of assessment to a new male bystander for the triage of the victim as I had to fight the female dog again. Due to shock, injury and exhaustion the female dog was able to easy lock onto my injured right forearm and able to crack bone again. With a punch to the nose I was able to return to the victim and make a visual of the injuries, Deep laceration to the all extremities with bicep hanging. I order the victim covered from the cold until professional help arrived. I scampered to my vehicle to call Brenda Roman to get the kids to school and come to my location and help me back to the hospital. As police approached I directed and order them to kill female pit bull as I limped back toward the animal that the men were keeping abbey from me and the victim. Three Sheriffs isolated the dog as I directed paramedics to the victim not me. Once the police finally shot the last dog and I was answering the medic’s questions I provided the police with ID and initial brief. Medics recommend I go with them, but I choose to return to my clinic where I knew everyone. Injured soldier that helped offered ride to nearby Madigan Army Hospital. Again I declined choosing to return to my Urgent Care at American Lake VA Hospital where I know everyone.

Lucy is a 2 year old spayed American Bulldog that needs a loving home where she can run and play. Lucy has had one incident since we had her where she jumped a baby gate and got into a dog fight in her yard and bit the other dogs owner as she attempted to break up the fight. Lucy has never displayed this behavior and was only protecting her family and home. Kitsap Animal Control says Lucy is a danger however she is not. Lucy does not stand a chance at a good life if left in Kitsap County. If here she must be isolated and not able to go on car rides as she so much loves. she loves to play and go to the lake and swim and chase after sticks thrown in the water. Lucy also is very funny and is very entertaining. She is very protective of her family and her home. Lucy is a 2 year old American Bulldog that we are wanting to re-home out of Kitsap County. Lucy jumped over a baby gate and got into a fight with another dog in her yard and bit the other dogs owner. Per Kitsap Animal Control Lucy is a danger and has to be isolated, away from other people and has to be muzzled when leaving the house. Lucy was protecting her environment and she is being punished by it. Lucy is fun, lots of energy, very lovable and funny. She was named after Lucille Ball as she has that goofy funny disposition. Lucy loves to give smooches and sit on your lap. She needs to have grain free food as she has a sensitive tummy and sometimes needs rice and yogurt if her tummy is bothering her. Lucy is updated on all shots. She does have allergies and takes Benadryl everyday and we keep a bottle of liquid Benadryl for bee stings. Lucy loves to go for car rides, does not care for the dog park because she wants to make sure her family is taken care of and she loves the lake but hates having a bath (silly girl) Lucy can self entertain but loves to be around her family. Lucy goes no where without her blankie and will drag it around if she is tired. Lucy likes to be placed behind the baby gate when it is to busy in the house or she wants to sleep. She also has been kennel trained but likes to just be outside mommy's door at night with her blanket and gait up. There is so much to say about Lucy. She has been a great addition to our family for the last year.

Hello. My name is Frank McManus. I need to rehome my pit bulls as soon as possible. The State of Pennsylvania has deemed them "dangerous dogs" for attacking another dog.

Mor is 14 months old and is a pure bred old family red nose pit bull. She is about fifty pounds. She does have problems with other animals but not with Finn who she lives with. She has been toy aggressive with Finn on two occasions. She is not food aggressive and loves people. Super high energy. Needs spayed.

Finn is 3 years old and is well socialized, very mellow and a great boy. He is around 75 pounds. He is a rescue from the Harrisburg Humane Society. He is fixed.

Rehoming my dogs is my only option. Being considered dangerous dogs they will never be able to go on a walk again and my landlord will evict me if I do not remove them. I must seek an out of state rescue so that they are not considered "dangerous dogs" which they are not. Finn has never had a problem before. Plays well at the groomer and dog park. Mor needs socialization which has always been a challenge.

I am devastated about having to give them up. I have already been to court for it. However if they were to get out of the gate again they may be put down. And as I said before, as of now, they cant go for a walk ever again and I may be evicted. I am in a terrible position. I never want to leave them but I am being forced to.

i had a lot of questions. i hoped to find the answers on facebook but it just left me with more questions. questions like, why did this mangina drive all the way to georgia, fork over $1500 for an OFR when the shelters in pennysylvania are bursting at the seams with pit bulls? especially in light of the fact that even his friends were saying he needed ANOTHER dog like he needed a hole in his head, indicating that he was struggling with the one mutant. why is this dufus surprised that he can't handle a dog that has been intensively bred for combat for almost 200 years? why does a successful tattoo artist, who can afford to drive to georgia and pay $1500 for a FREAKING DIME A DOZEN PIT BULL, need to trade tattoos for firearms? why doesn't he just purchase them? unless of course, he legally can't. why is he moving? why did his june pride in his little mutant's first kill turn into a desperate need to unload her in august?

I need to find my puppy a home. Her name is Mor. She is one year old and about 45 pounds. She is an old family red nose pit bull. So she is not a rescue. She is a very rare bloodline. It is because of high prey drive and energy. She lives with another male dog now and they are great friends so she has the ability to be good with other dogs. I do not want to give her up. She is amazing. But I have had a difficult time training and socializing her. She needs much more time and effort than I have experienced with my other dogs. the spate of attacks in the seattle area prompted an interview on a local radio show with a seattle dog trainer and pit bull owner. this is an unusual break from the routine which typically lines up pit bull apologists for monday morning quarterbacking and damage control. STEVE DUNO had this to say
"The dogs that participated in these attacks weren't Pekingese. You don't have herds of Pekingese roaming the city attacking people. When someone says all breeds are created equal, well then they're denying the definition of what a breed is. Breed serves a particular purpose."

"I like them. They're eager. They're athletic. They're aesthetically pleasing. But even if they're bred perfectly, they can be problematic, particularly with other dogs."

"When you combine the breed specific behaviors ... with owners who either don't give a rip, or with owners who (have) too much dog, you have a problem."

four dogs wriggled through a weak spot in the fence, two pit bulldogs, a "mixed breed" and a pomeranian. after entering and exiting a strange home, the "mixed breed" bit a man who was painting a house. firefighters/medics were called to the scene. the dogs swarmed the firetruck and became aggressive towards the first responders, preventing them from treating the victim. police and animal control were called. the police tried pepper spray, then a fire extinguisher but had to shoot one of them when they charged them.

the reporter stated that KIM PACE identified herself as a "veterinarian" and said that she lives with the mutants which are certified "therapy dogs" who visit the elderly. PACE also stated that she has never had a problem with the dogs.

"I've lived with them, I've had many situations where these dogs could have done something to me and they rolled over and licked me. So, it's not the breed. It's the situation."

contrast the "veterinarian's" statement with reality.
1) the dog that was shot and killed, had a bite history.
2) the veterinarian's linkedin page states she is a vet tech.
3) one of my secret squirrels contacted a previous employer who confirmed PACE worked there as a vet assistant, ie a glorified title for a pooper scooper & dog walker.

later for the seattle times interview, PACE offered up the following:
1) the shooting was unnecessary because the police KNEW that she was on her way home.
2) it's the fault of the police and firefighters because they pulled into her driveway by mistake. had they gone to the neighbor, the dogs would not have felt compelled to protect their property. (considering the dogs ran into the home of another neighbor, i suspect these mutants would have protected anything in their sight)
3) the victim's injury consisted of "barely scratched".

MICHAEL STEVEN VEIDT'S two dogs escaped his yard and joined up with another neighborhood thug and attacked a 66 yr old man. the victim was trying to fight off the attackers with a pocket knife when another neighbor came to his aid.

VEIDT states that his dogs, SAVAGE and MV are "loving" and "family oriented", and blames the mystery mutant for initiating the attack. VEIDT also claims his dogs are a bullmastiff and a boxer.

this doesn't look like any bullmastiff i've ever seen. in fact, it looks a lot like that ugly "mixed breed" pictured at the top.

VEIDT has a colorful past. in 2007, he and one of his home boys were scooped up in a prostitution sting. VEIDT and HUTTON were charged with first degree kidnapping. VEIDT also picked up a second degree rape charge, while HUTTON was charged with pimping women.

Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations

on may 6th, a concerned citizen of washington sent me an email about a scandal involving STEVE MARKWELL of the olympic animal sanctuary. you might remember MARKWELL, he was the featured pit nutter of the month in december 2009 after an aggressive pit bull in king county named SNAPS was spared his dirt nap and allowed to live out his life at the OAS. i am opposed to sparing the lives of aggressive dogs. i am also opposed to warehousing them.

before i could launch my attack on MARKWELL, ANOTHER tip came in from ANOTHER concerned citizen of washington about ANOTHER rescue scandal in washington. as i began looking into ROSE ADAMS and her associates, as well as MARKWELL'S, i discovered there is some interesting overlap among the scandals. most of these rescue freaks are connected. the situation in washington was beginning to resemble a dog rescue / pit bull advocacy crime syndicate. but first MARKWELL...

MARKWELL earned his BA in "youth work" from a christian university and then acquired an on-line masters degree in "non-profit management" three years before launching OAS. despite the fact that he has no training in dog behavior, he began marketing himself as some kind of über dog whispering lion tamer magician on steroids and scooping up dogs, dangerous (and not dangerous) to live out their lives on his bucolic "sanctuary" on the washington peninsula while aggressively seeking donations in the hopes of one day expanding his rescue operation to include wolves and big cats. MARKWELL boasts on linkedin that he specializes in:

Habitat design and construction

last april, Inside Bainbridge did a three part series on MARKWELL'S "sanctuary". since then others have come forward to complain about the horrendous conditions at the "sanctuary". dogs were photographed emaciated and severely neglected and in need of basic maintenance like nail trimming and serious veterinary care of open wounds. some dogs were found spinning in circles in their small filthy cages with disgusting bowls of water or living in crates, stacked on top of one another in a dark building with no heat. MARKWELL has also had his share of yard accidents. three dogs that were killed in just over a week from dog fights, their deaths were shrugged off. MARKWELL said that while not an ideal situation it is how dogs function in the wild. a slow painful death at the hands of humans or being savagely killed by other dogs is acceptable but a humane death at the hand of a human is an abomination. and obviously in his feeble mind, alive and spinning is preferable to no life at all. despite the outcry, local law enforcement has been unwilling to pursue charges or even force him to COMPLY WITH STATE LAW. it seems that the lion tamer is well connected. you can see all of the ugliness at the olympic oasis for yourself - HERE. MARKWELL'S facility looks more like a third world shanty town than an animal "sanctuary". and he brings in $150,000 a year in donations.

the most famous resident at OAS is SNAPS, a pit bull mix sentenced to death after he was ordered to attack the woman who tried to stop a group of juvenile delinquents from beating SNAPS. instead of a dirt nap, pit nutters managed to have him spirited away to OAS.

i'm sure MARKWELL raked in boo coo bucks with this rags to riches story.

this is SNAPS today, after his sad story fell from the headlines and MARKWELL no longer had any use of him.

the animal cruelty charges have brought unwelcome attention to MARKWELL'S financials and raised questions about the potential for misappropriation of funds. he raised money specifically for pit bull housing, small dog housing and the clearwater hounds housing. interestingly, he met the goals for small dogs and hounds but the pit bull fundraiser fell short, yet those facilities were never built.

the most recent OAS 990 shows that OAS brought in over $150K, yet the dogs are emaciated and living in filth.

i would like to know how this huge man, who works 80 hours a week, maintains his "beefy body" on NO INCOME? i can't even begin to wrap my brain around the amount of money needed to provide the necessary calories to maintain his weight while doing 80 hours of hard labor he claims to do each week. and what about clothing? personal items? medical care? if he is not drawing a salary, MARKWELL is treating the OAS checkbook as his own personal funds. unless he is living off of a trust fund, there is no other explanation.

concerned activists have launched a facebook campaign to have MARKWELL shut down as well as an online petition. usually i shun on-line petitions but i occasionally get involved, like this one.

here is an eye witness account of the "sanctuary" from Jason Victory:

Myself and 3 other Animal Advocates (all who have nothing to do with the creation of this page) who live in the Seattle WA area found the Olympic Animal Sanctuary through animal rights newsletters and other activist, we visited the facility inside and out a total of 12 times, from the very first day Steve Markwell was an odd character in our minds, we've all done work parties on numerous sanctuaries and something wasn't right from our very first visit! Steve wouldn't allow us entry to the building (ok fair enough), in fact unlike every sanctuary we've been too Steve never gave us a warm welcoming or a tour, instead he talked a lot about himself, how he carries a gun strapped on his ankle and even took the time to show us, he had one person bring dogs out individually, all the dogs we met were friendly or shy, when we finally gained access (legally) to the old windowless metal building we instantly knew this sanctuary was not good! we were hit in the face with a smell so enormous and foul it made 2 people in our group exit the building and vomit, here's what we documented:
Dogs living in travel crates stacked 3-4 high, animals on the higher crates defecating and urinating on the animals below, animals to big for their crate, they couldn't turn around, rotting urine soaked hay, some hay soaked with bloody diarrhea/vomit, some animals in kennels had dead rodents in their bedding, dogs with broken teeth from trying to escape via chewing their way out (you can see in one of my photos where a large dog chewed a hole in the side of his crate), animals with open sores, worms living around the anus of one animal, some animals shivering from being cold in a building without heat, animals living in the cold in a metal horse trailer without water, food or bedding and sometimes in the dead of the heat during summer, many animals with water buckets had filthy greenish/black water, dogs living in crates under a staircase in total darkness and scared! animals in an upstairs room we we're never able to gain access too, rotting raw meat intended for dogs setting out without being properly stored, some of this raw meat had turned color and rancid smelling, dogs with bald patches, dogs covered in fleas, Dogs not getting socialized, animals not getting exercised, no plan for training or rehab, no schedule, no paid workers, no staff and on Steve's own admission to us, several dogs were killed due to fighting in less than a weeks time, some animals being kept in rooms sealed with a glass partitions, filth everywhere.
Steve and his supporters have stated these conditions happened due to a volunteer not doing their job correctly, NOT TRUE! Steve actually lives in this building in a room on the lower level just across from the dogs in crates and kennels, Steve and the OAS board of directors are the only ones to blame! Some of his supporters keep insisting nothing can be wrong since the police did an investigation and found nothing wrong, well we all should know by now that animals wellbeing aren't always on the priority of the police, and we've got word that the police are now blocked to the premises by Steve's high paid attorney and the Police are admitting to possible overlooking the situation! 
We ask any reader to look into Steve's behavior, the facts, tax records, and the articles recently done by poor journalism, in these recent postings from either journalist who have never been to OAS or went with scheduled announced arrival, you'll see photo's of animals, and sure some of those photo's seem reasonable, but in those photo's you may see about 10 animals, lets see the other 120+ animals and lets see a article written by a reporter who hasn't arranged an arrival and visits OAS unannounced, lets see an article of the full access of OAS, we guarantee a completely different story! a story of abuse, neglect and horror! Steve and his supporters keep saying "Donate, Donate" and "Volunteer", people have donated 100's of thousands of dollars, people have tried to volunteer, Steve has a secret and if you can't keep that secret, you won't be allowed entry! and why donate to this new property that promises to be larger with more room for the dogs, if Steve failed these animals in his care for the past several years at this smaller location, what in the right mind of any smart common person makes you think he'll do any better with a larger piece of property (keep in mind this new proposed property has no buildings on it)?! if he couldn't provide basic care and safety to these animals on a smaller scale, and if he's struggling with money on this smaller project, what makes it better or different to make it a larger situation/problem, at the end of the day, the only one's paying the price is those animals, period! this is all happening in Forks WA in a windowless, non heated, non cooled, non ventilated, old Logging Truck maintenance building

let's take a look at some of MARKWELL'S own words. 

"I didn't really understand animal welfare as a movement. It was a way to get free snakes."  this is one clever opportunistic parasite. he now understands the animal welfare movement and he knows there is much more to be gained from the bleeding hearts than a few free snakes.

"In a town like this I've been able to get my reputation established and do a lot of things I'd have a hard time doing in a place like Seattle." yes, things like fly under the radar. it's no accident that MARKWELL landed in forks, a remote rural area surrounded by indian reservations and armed hermits fanatical about everyone minding their own business. animal rights and welfare types are scarce and law enforcement tends to be run by redneck good old boys that drink beer and hunt together on the weekends.

He scoffs at "dog whisperers" and rejects potential volunteers who say they have a "spiritual kinship" with animals. "I have absolutely no place for people like that because they're dangerous," he said. "What it takes is common sense and experience. That whole 'animals like me' -- well, animals like me too. But I take a really bad bite about once a month. Let's not rely on that as our safety mechanism."  12.11.09

"I use my magical affinity for animals and my mystical connection to them to reach into their souls and become one with their spirits."  12.24.09

MARKWELL currently has somewhere between 120-150 dogs. and he is still on the SAME half acre property.

"Marketing to a younger demographic is something few charities try to do, but it’s a big part of our marketing philosophy." 12.24.09
with his educational background in "youth work", religion and non-profits, MARKWELL is perfectly suited to target the young gullible idiots with no real world experience and of course the pit bull demographic. that's where the real money is.

despite the obvious contradictions, slippery MARKWELL has many bamboozled. he is well connected and has loyal supporters. they claim a single disgruntled individual is on a hate campaign.

DIANE HAWKINS, treasurer and mommy. she apparently owns the property that OAS currently occupies and draws monthly rent income, well until he can find a larger property where he can torture even more dogs.

MATTHEW RANDAZZO, vice chair of MARKWELL'S little house of horrors. RANDAZZO is also the special assistant to the state commissioner of public lands and has been involved with local democratic orgs. he is in a position to curry favor with local government. last december, RANDAZZO and his wife MELISSA were named as defendants in what appears to be action taken against them for unpaid debt. RANDAZZO claims to be a successful author of crime dramas and his wife MELISSA polishes turds for a living.

ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND thinks highly enough of MARKWELL to invite him to speak last year at the university of washington law school continuing education: The Pit Bull Public Health “Problem": Myth Not Menace. the non-profit, christian youth dude appears to be the only non lawyer in the lineup.

and now things get interesting...

BRANDIA TAAMU dedicated a facebook page to defending MARKWELL. TAAMU chides his critics who have not seen OAS first hand, and while she admits that she hasn't actually visited the "sanctuary", she is convinced that MARKWELL is being unfairly persecuted. she states that the photos are real but the filth, emaciation and spinning behavior occurred under the watch of volunteers while STEVE was out of town. some of the photos of the "sanctuary" are dated june, july, september and october 2012. i guess STEVE travels a lot. and when he does, he takes the dog food with him?

it comes as no surprise to me that BRANDIA TAAMU would defend MARKWELL for neglecting his animals. the state has taken TAAMU'S children and animals from her due to neglect. i don't think i have seen anything quite like TAAMU. she is definitely one of the screwier no kill kooks that i have come across. she has more websites than KRIS CRAWFORD and TAAMU definitely gives off con artist vibes. TAAMU has uploaded her protracted legal battle with the city of everett for animal cruelty onto facebook. it's ALL there. nothing has been redacted, not her address, not even her social security number.

while TAAMU fights for MARKWELL'S right to neglect 100+ dogs, she is also railing against another rescue abuse case. enter lice infested ROSE ADAMS, the second rescue scandal to hit my gmail box in may. TAAUMU has been instrumental in bringing down this white trash nutter welfare queen. why? cuz ROSE ADAMS reported TAAMU for neglecting her dogs and cats! tit for tat. TAAMU was staying with ROSE and keeping her 2 cats and 3 dogs (i think) IN HER CAR. hell, i'm not sure how many animals were living in her car. i got dizzy trying to ride her crazy train.

instead of giving BRANDIA TAAMU what she really needs, intensive psychiatric treatment, the state of washington gave her non-profit status. brilliant!

ROSE ADAMS is a train wreck in her own right. according to BRANDIA TAAMU who apparently has written ROSE'S unauthorized biography, ADAMS has an extensive criminal history including theft, forgery, assault, child abuse, animal cruelty.

ROSE ADAMS was critical of another animal abuse case I blogged about, SERENA and JASON LARSEN. ADAMS didn't think these two fucktards suffered enough at the hands of the courts for keeping dogs in crates. you really can't make this shit up!

ANNA LUDWIG thinks "STEVE is just a nice man in need of some help". she is trying to rally the troops for food donations. i think ANNA LUDWIG is just another miscreant. the washington courts database reveals LUDWIG as another frequent flyer of the washington court system.

When this first broke last weekend I was just like most people and all spun with emotion and the urge to "do something" because I am so close to OAS , then when my feathers unruffled I began thinking how much this person has done. For years he has been running a sanctuary under less than ideal conditions and ran it very well. He has been on a one man mission, literally for the underdog of dogs.

what a convoluted mess. how the hell do all of these miscreants know each other? did they bump into each other in the waiting room of their probation officer?

when i look at all of these rescue angels' court profiles, the first thing that comes to mind: PARASITES. these people are nothing but social parasites. they fed off of the system before finding their sweet spot in animal rescue then the host shifted from the tax payer to gullible donators and helpless animals. this is despicable. animal rescue needs to be heavily regulated by the state to ensure that animals do not suffer at the hands of people of poor character who are either looking for an "easy" living or are trying to work out their issues.
