In a very ambitious campaign to bully the residents of Tehachapi, Tia Torres has spun a wicked fairy tale to incite frothy rage in thousands of pit nutters across the US. The fantasy features "an individual on a witch hunt" ...who is... "spewing hatred" against the victim supreme - the pit bull. "Never in my dreams would I think that such an angry and hateful woman co-existed there." Torres has the pit bull posse signing petitions left and right demanding that Tehachapi comply with the nationwide nutter population's demands to allow Villalobos to open a shelther there.
In reality Torres' "individual, angry, hateful witch hunter" is Merle Carnes, a woman in her late 60's and in poor health who just lost her husband a few months ago.Carnes is president of the Old West Ranch Property Owners Association and was acting as such when she wrote a letter to her neighbors in Old West Ranch. In the letter she urges her neighbors to weigh in against the dog rescue for many reasons. Most of her concerns would be applicable to a 100 dog rescue for any breed, though the fact that many of these dogs are no ordinary pitties, but demonstrably aggressive pit bulls already judged dangerous and removed from owners by court orders is a significant factor.
Carnes and 7 out of 8 of her neighbors are concerned about the impact of a large population of dogs will have on the community for a number of reasons:
· A much smaller rescue on the same site posed quality of life and safety problems for the community.
· Torres' rescue will be 12 times larger than the previous rescue.
· Concerns about the quality of supervision of both the dogs and the parolees
· High number of fighting dogs when dog fighting has been a problem in the past in the area.
· Negative environmental impact of 100 dogs with regards to water pollution and air pollution.
· Increased potential for air-borne dust spread disease Valley Fever
· Negative impact on roads and increased road maintenance costs.
· Concerns about 100 barking dogs diminishing community's quality of life.
· Torres' assumption she will have free access to her neighbors' properties with her dogs (trespassing)
Carnes is not making any of these concerns up. In June of 2010, before the community was aware of Torres' plans, Ken Mixon wrote a letter on the Old West Ranch Owners Association facebook page enumerating some persistent problems that needed to be addressed in the community:
· Stray dogs and owners not following the law
· Trespassing
· Speeding on dirt roads - The Air Pollution Control set the speed limit for dirt roads at 15 mph. This is a health and environmental issue
· Tight budget
Ken Mixon has since decided to support the 100 dog rescue in the neighborhood. He transmitted portions of a letter sent to him from Torres to the OWR HOA facebook page in which she states that she has had "ZERO barking dogs complaints."
That directly contradicts what is reported in an interview with her that was printed Nov. 4, 2010. 'Torres not only contends with her neighbors, who don’t like the barking dogs, but with law enforcement. “It’s a tough battle here. We get harassed by law enforcement a lot,” she says, waving her black-tipped nails in the air. “We get phone calls from law enforcement from all over the country. They love us, except right here in our own county (Los Angeles County.) They hate us.”'
Carnes is not alone in voicing her concerns, however; Don Olsen on the OWR POA facebook page raises the following issues:
· Quality of life deterioration when triple chain link fencing and concrete perimeters and multiple storage containers create an eye-sore like the one in Agua Dulce
· Potential danger if dogs were released in the event of a wildfire
· Increased traffic from parolees and workers, visitors, and camera crews
· Unreliable "promise" that road maintenance will be paid for by the TV production company only so long as the show lasts
· Rumors of expansion to other properties
And in addition to the issues raised by community members, it would be wise for the community to question Torres about these additional issues:
· Reliability of supervision of the facility in light of the fact that there have been legal problems at the Aqua Dulce property both with drugs and stolen property
· Who owns and who will be responsible for the property since Tia Torres does not own it?
· How big will the rental cabin venture be? What kind of facilities will be provided for the renters?
· How many animals will actually be there including rescues, pets and exotic species?
But back to Merle Carnes, Tia's scapegoat created to bully an entire town. When a devastating wildfire broke out last summer, Merle Carnes delayed her own evacuation to make sure her neighbors had been alerted. When her car wouldn't start, a neighbor rescued her.
After the fire, "as board members of the POA, Buzz Grantham and Merle Carnes (led) the team on the Ranch working with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross and doing the coordination between them and the fire victims."
While supporting a large 320 wind turbine project by Terra-Gen, Carnes brokered an agreement to move or remove three turbines that would have been placed too close to the Old West Ranch area.
Carnes was publicly thanked for providing hospice care for a neighbor.
Merle was not alone in helping out after the fire. "Merle Carnes, said it’s the type of community where everyone checks on everyone else to see how they’re doing. Carnes, who is president of the local homeowners association, said they will be taking care of people who have suffered losses."
Not only is Torres attempting to scapegoat Merle Carnes, she is trying to create a rift in a community that has been able to be self-sufficient because they have helped each other out and taken care of each other.
Torres, talking out of both sides of her mouth, first condemns Merle Carnes as a meddling, disinterested person, suggesting that "(t)his woman lives nowhere near the new place yet she, for some reason wants to shut down an organization..."
Then Torres turns right around and threatens to bring in people from hundreds or thousands of miles away to somehow legitimize her cause.
'A hearing has been set for March 10th where the community and Torres will get a chance to speak their minds.
Torres and her friends have been spreading the word that if the county board denies her a permit and a variance, Villalobos will be destroyed.
If villalobos is moving to Tehachapi and leaving Agua Dulce, then Torres needs to explain what she is going to do with all her animals. At Agua Dulce, she has over 120 pit bulls, uncounted dogs of other breeds, about 20 wolves, her own pets - dozens of cats and dogs, and a couple of bears.
On the other hand, if this is an expansion, then it is an outright lie that Villalobos will be shut down if they aren't successful in bullying their way into this community. And if it is an expansion, who is going to be supervising 100 pit bulls and parolees at the Tehachapi rescue, her daughters?
In addition to Torres, the actual owners of the property should also be present at the hearing on March 10th because they will be legally responsible for the maintenance and any accidents that occur there. That's right, Torres' name is not even on the deed to this property. The deed holders are Tia's daughter Mariah Harmony Kaye, a 19 year old judgment-proof girl and a real estate agent named Veronica (RoniR) Raczkowski. Raczkowski is also the "California Team Leader for Best Friends Network."
The town of Tehachapi should know what kind of people are bullying their way into their town. Tia Torres, mother of two daughters and "adoptive mother" to twin boys, describes herself this way:
"I'm a rebel, I'm an advocate for the underdog and I've become disenchanted with the "system." (don't count on her to care about traditions,rules, or laws). My kids are my pride and joy even if they don't think that's the way I feel about them. I have a husband (in prison) who adores me more than life itself (she's got no competition) and I am overwhelmed with his heart (but his brain that put him back in prison, not so much). My dogs have been my life saviors and I wouldn't be where I am today without them. My life revolves around all of the above. And though I'm am perceived as a thick skinned, hard as nails, don't give a shit kind of person, its' only because of what our family has had to endure (it's the world's fault if she's a selfish outlaw). We are true believers of Karma and feel that because of all the good things we try to do as a family, that she (karma is not a goddess, but whatever) will protect us and if need be...become one hell of a bitch (the gods are on her side, not yours). Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. Fuck me a third time...watch what happens (did this suddenly get literal?)."
Aren Marcus Jackson, Torres' currently incarcerated husband on the 3 strikes rule was arrested for possession of stolen property which was found at Villalobos and which he blames on one of the other parolees.
The twin adoptive sons, Kanani and Keli'i, "started off by just working here on weekends...and they're still here. And they fit right in with the rest, getting speeding tickets and getting their cars impounded...and you know, they're now part of the moll's extended family." Remember, people, 15 mph for the environment and the neighborhood! yeah right. The twins fit in even better with the parolees when one of them got busted for meth and heroin at Villalobos.
Both of her daughters are following in Tia's footsteps, pussyfooting way past independence into the land of the outlaw.

In addition, there are the parolees. Torres assures the neighbors she doesn't hire sex offenders but I guess apart from that anything goes. She also claims to have forgotten one of her current parolees offenses...FANTASTIC supervision and very reassuring to the community.
The town of Tehachapi also should know the kind of people Tia has whipped into a frenzy of hate and spite and will be coming to Tehachapi from all over the country for the hearing on March 10th.

I think what Tia is doing is great. I have owned a pit bull for the last 7 years and he is nicer then my lab or my hound dog. I would have no problem letting h im around children of any age but would not let my other 2 dogs around children. My pit sleeps in bed with me everynight! My mother owns a boarding facility and pit bulls are the nicest dogs we board. I would rather deal with a pit bull then a chi or dach. Infact I have never been bitten by a "bully breed" but have been sent to the hospital for a chi bite. We help the bully rescues in the area and that includes a pit bull rescue and gladly help them any day if they need for a dog to go somewhere fast. Pit bulls are not the fighters its the owners they are trying to protect. Have you ever seen a bait dog or even the scares on a pit bull from fighting? I have and those dogs are the ones that need to be shown what love is again. I agree with everything Tia does and support her in everyway I can. People need to take the time and spend time with such a wonderful breed and not listen to everything they hear on tv. More power to tia, her daughters, and the workers!
Jessica Kutler, pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs to the death in a pit. They are likely to have high dog-directed aggression and kill more people than any other breed. I'm glad your little world is different from that the rest of us inhabit.

With all due respect, do you see how your post makes you look?
You ignore the mountain of evidence that pit bulls are the most dangerous breed (not surprising since they were bred specifically for strength, violent aggression and indifference to pain) and claim that pit bulls are all harmless little misunderstood wiggle-butts, and yet you claim to have been mauled by a chihuahua.
I know about a lot of people who talked just like you do, about their sweet little pibble - before the "pibble" mauled them, a family member, or a neighbor, without warning.
Most of the pro pitbull postings I've seen in this thread are similarly suspect rants.
I admit, I have seen intelligent and responsible pit bull owners - they readily admit that pits are not for everyone, and that pits can be dangerous and must be properly managed - to those responsible pit bull owners I tip my hat and say "I salute you, respect, go in peace".
But as for the others, the naive, passionate, deluded, irresponsible pit bull nuts, who blindly defend the breed at all costs, care nothing for the victims, and insist on placing these dangerous creatures into unsuspecting homes and communities, I can only say, please stay far, far away!
I hate that the writer of this blog uses the when woman's age, health status and the fact that she lost her husband. These things have nothing to do with the subject at hand. As a 3 time cancer survivor I hate people who use their trauma in this way. These dogs have just as many sad stories and their trauma I'm sure is worse then all of us will ever endure.
The rest is not worth commenting on because people like this stay judgmental and they are impossible to educate. Thank goodness the world will turn over and the new generation has a better outlook on life as a whole. To include animals, parolees and anyone else who needs a chance.

Really? Is that why when the three pit bulls that live on my end of our apartment complex strain at their leashes snarling when they happen to see each other during walks are doing? Protecting their owners?
The behavior of these dogs is suspect enough that I carry a hunting knife with me when I take my 2 year old out should one of these dogs get free and make a go for her (one has already lunged at me while I was walking into our building). I only hope I'm fast enough to protect my child should the unthinkable happen. At the very least I hope if one of these pits tries to fulfill it's genetic potential it goes for me and not my toddler. I might survive, my baby probably would not.
Kind of pathetic that I have to feel this way and arm myself against dogs in a nice, middle class suburban area but thanks to the influx of fighting dogs in our complex I feel I have no choice.

Now, I am a Pitbull owner & I do agree with this statement. I have always said that these dogs are not for everyone. They have the potential to be very dangerous, especially if you don't have the time to properly socialize & train them. I also feel that too many irresponsible, dangerous, stupid people get their hands on this breed & don't do the appropriate steps to raise a well behaved, social, loving dog, & it's those people that give Pitbulls like mine a bad rep! I feel that in order to own ANY "aggressive type" breed (Pitbulls, Rottweilers, Boxers, Bulldogs, German Shepards, etc) the person should have to fill out a very detailed/extensive application to see if they are even qualified to own such a powerful breed! My 3 Pitbulls have been going to doggie daycare since they were all pups. My oldest, Shamaya/6 yrs old, has been attending daycare since she was 7 weeks old, Hazel Havik/5 yrs old, since she was 4.5 months old, & Nylla Wayfer/4 yrs old, since she was 5 weeks old, & they have never attacked/bit anyone; but they all have been attacked & did not fight back at all! I can even give you the names of the 2 daycares & the will tell you the same! Hazel is even a therapy dog! Pitbulls are definitely NOT FOR EVERYONE, but they do great with/for me!!! :-)

I am not a bully owner but I support Tia and what she is doing. I know that what we see on tv isn't the whole story. My daughter use to rescue dogs in Las Vegas so I know what the rescue is all about. I also support her efforts to help the parolees. Everyone needs a champion and if it isn't your thing then leave her alone and let her do hers. If the parolees or Tia screw up you have a prison right there in Tehachapi for them. Live and let live. No one is telling you you have to clean up your place or putting restrains on you. Eveyone can worry about the what if's but we life in the right now. If it's a problem figure out away to make it work not just say no way. We all need to help one another. If Merle Carnes is this wonderful person then she needs to be working with Tia to hammer out an agreement that will benefit everyone.

Any do can bite it isn't exclusive to a breed.....we has a society fear what we don't know. Some people exploited the pit bulls by fighting them. It doesn't make the whole breed bad. Merle Carne's husband was a wonderful wonderful person. He would have been one of the doctors trying to put the body of a child back together after a pit bull attack. He worked in the emergency room, seeing the results of what a former fighting dog could and would do to a child.

It doesn't matter what the earliest bull & terrier did. In England, dog fighters began over 100 years ago to craft a dog genetically fit to fight other dogs to the death in a pit for no good reason. Some of these made their way across the Atlantic, and the selective breeding continued. Wouldn't it be better to advocate for stricter breeding laws that breed out the aggressiveness of the "Bad Pitt Bulls" and keep the breed. One thing I admire about the Japanese culture is that they do not over use their word for "love". To them it is the highest word and is not vulgarized by kids constantly saying "i love mcdonalds" or Vanessa expressing her deep love for pit bulls. People who are judged negatively all of a sudden become hypersensitive to the whole concept. Earth to pit nutters, judging things is absolutely necessary and you should do it all the time.

I have a theory why a good chunk of people do body manipulation, and it may be why they get pit bulls as well. They want to externalize their feelings of being judged. If they put a friggin' steel screw through their nose and connect it to their nipple, then all those feelings of inadequacy and being judged are no longer about how they behave or what they think and say, no it is all because those a-holes are judging me for my nose-nipple spike. Very similar for pit bulls I believe. That's why these people scream about stereotyping, judging, and generalizing so much. They've been judged, and they don't like the jury's outcome.
I will never own a pit bull nor do I want one living anywhere near me, and I think there should be laws regulating them. I came to this conclusion by reading pit bull rescue web sites and the comments of pit bull owners like the ones here. I am not a hater, I am not ignorant, and the media had nothing to do with it. I read these three things and it was all I needed to know:
1) Pit bulls are not the right pet for everyone and need a strong, experienced owner
2) Responsible pit bull owners should also own a break stick to pry their pit bull's mouth open in the case it bites on to something
3) Responsible pit bull owners in a multiple dog household must practice the "crate and rotate" method or risk dog fights and possible pet death.
I have never seen any other type of dog come with these warning and stipulations, nor have I seen a bunch of breed owners so vicious and clueless in defense of their dogs. Common sense told me I want nothing to do with these dogs or their owners, and real life experience reinforces it on a daily basis. The home owners association in question clearly uses common sense, and seriously feel for these people who are now targeted.
If you really love pit bulls, learn about them, own them safely, and for God's sake push for some regulation to mandate education and safety. Your rights end where others' rights begin, and no one has a right to own a pit bull.
As far as those spay neuter clinics, she's not using any of the money people have given her, that is a separate grant, that was not given to her, and that she administers.

German Shepherds, Dobermans, Chow Chows, all have been breed to be guard/attack dogs over time and they can be just as vicious. You say you are familiar with the dogs, and you believe you are a responsible pet owner then you should know that a dog behavior is only as good as its owners training. I've witnessed how the media can take an event involving one of these dogs and twist it around making the dog look vicious. I witnessed a neighbors dog who moved toward the sidewalk while it was playing in the front yard with the female owner while she waited for the cops because her husband beat the shit out of her, not aggressive at all, tail wagging and ball in mouth and with no warning one of the cops drew his gun and blew her fu#$ing dog away in front of all the neighbor kids, just so that night the news could feature a story about how an officers life was in jeopardy as he was attacked by a pitbull while going to a domestic disturbance call.
