Obama weighs in on pit bulls and public safety

pit nutter salute

We don't support breed-specific legislation -- research shows that bans on certain types of dogs are largely ineffective and often a waste of public resources.

In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at twenty years of data about dog bites and human fatalities in the United States. They found that fatal attacks represent a very small proportion of dog bite injuries to people and that it's virtually impossible to calculate bite rates for specific breeds.

The CDC also noted that the types of people who look to exploit dogs aren't deterred by breed regulations -- when their communities establish a ban, these people just seek out new, unregulated breeds. And the simple fact is that dogs of any breed can become dangerous when they're intentionally or unintentionally raised to be aggressive.

For all those reasons, the CDC officially recommends against breed-specific legislation -- which they call inappropriate. You can read more from them here.

As an alternative to breed-specific policies, the CDC recommends a community-based approach to prevent dog bites. And ultimately, we think that's a much more promising way to build stronger communities of pets and pet owners.

The president won't just be bubble wrapped on inauguration day. He and his family will be bubble wrapped on
family day

school day

work day

play day

church day

and garden day.  for the rest of their lives.

I bet Roy McSweeny would be still alive if he had armed men in black standing guard while he tended to his garden.

Divorced from reality and bubble wrapped in tax payer money.

Obama sounds awful detached when he can quote from a study by the CDC done in 2000. Even that CDC report shows pit bulls pose a danger to public safety even when extraordinary pro pit bull efforts to unclassify pit bulls as pit bulls, giving them the benefit of the doubt, to skew the numbers to their favor. Even then, pit bulls still show up as the top killers.

In 2013, 16 people have died by pit bulls, someone's pet pit bull dog and the year is not over. For all other breeds, there were 2 deaths by dogs of differing breeds.

Yes, Obama's dogs are kept safe by the secret service, but not ours. If we defend our dogs we risk criminal charges.

Obama's excuses and misusing the 2000 CDC report does not sound like the words of a "community organizer", it's the exact opposite. More like the ramblings of a pit nutter.

I'm waiting for him to say if he had a dog it would look like Gunner (Darla Napora's pit bull). Oh wait, he has Portuguese Water Dogs. A far cry from pit bull dogs.

You think if Obama owned pit dogs and they attacked someone or another dog, would the SS shoot his pits? Maybe they would be prepared and have break sticks on them. Probably not.

animalcop50 said...

I challenge Obama with his family by his side and SS agents trailing them to take his dogs for a nice long walk through the average DC neighborhood and watch what happens! He will change his tune soon enough! Rather than having a good grasp on what is currently happening to families in communities all over the country, he jumps on the nutter bandwagon and participates in the lie! Why Mr. President would you hurt the victims so?? I want an answer!

vintage said...

This isn't a revelation. Mr. Obama Co-sponsored the grotesque "Anna's Law" while he served in the Illinois State Senate.

There's been 8 Pit Bull DBRFs in IL since it passed.

Criminal Charges; ZERO!

Pit Breeders, Dog Fighters and the Rescue angels laugh all the way to the bank!

There's your hope and change for you. America's Dog gets the green light, while at the same time obama and his administration is trying their hardest to disarm the law abiding people who would like to defend themselves and their families against this growing menace. A gun is the most effective way to stop an attacking shit bull. Unbelievable.

Ledy Vankavage wrote the " grotesque "Anna's Law" and presumably had lots of contact with the co-sponsors of the bill.

Given the wording and the tone of Obama's statement, I strongly suspect Vankavage wrote that too.

Just when I think I can't possibly find another reason to have this race baiting douche... like someone said, this guy has done so much damage we won't have another black president for 200 years.

Way to go Dawn, you hit it on the nose. I echo what AnimalCop50 said -- Obama can't walk his two non-pit fluffballs in his own neighborhood, there are so many loose pits and pits filling the DC shelter (just last week in the Post there was an article about the overcrowded hellhole that is the Washington Humane Society) -- well the article praised the place even though it's an overcrowded hellhole. A pibble with one eye was the cover darling. Obama's pro-pit proclamation won't hurt him one tiny bit. What a tool.

i challenge OBAMA to move to detroit for one month.

in 1981, then mayor of chicago, jane byrne, moved into one of the most dangerous ghettos in chicago and probably all of america - cabrini green. she promised to stay until the crime and violence was under control. she left before a month passed. byrne served only one term as mayor but her legacy is still felt today in the city's gun bans.

i'll say it again, i challenge OBAMA to move to detroit for one month, with the secret service of course. i'd like to see michelle gardening in detroit. i'd like see sasha and malia in the detroit school system. i'd like to see OBAMA bicycling in detroit neighborhoods.

then, re-evaulate BSL and re-issue a statement.

"she left before a month passed."

LOL classic.

Self-proclaimed "progressives" are so enamoured of their utopian fantasies that the (often ugly) real world barely enters their field of vision. As Thomas Sowell would say, "They replace what works with what sounds good."

Why is it that making a public statement against puppy mills, factory farming cruelties, pet overpopulation--too controversial and too potentially upsetting for the President, yet parroting the lines of the pit nutters a-OK?

Imagine if we had a President who stood up against gestation crates for pigs, for example, or canned hunt facilities--these are disgusting practices most normal people oppose. Yet this is his "animal friendly" statement?

Dawn, when was this statement made?

Anonymous said...

He can't come out against any of that animal cruelty stuff because he won't even use his authority to get due process to Gitmo prisoners and stop wasting govt funds force-feeding people who would rather die than be held prisoner for eternity without a trial. His idiotic pro-pit proclamation is about as fluffy as his two goddammned normal dogs. Yeah, move to Detroit for a month, Mr. President.

packhorse, i linked the whore house's BSL statement to the source. wouldn't that be funny if some nutter forged this?

for the record, i voted for OBAMA in 2008. it didn't take long to realize that he was just another whore for wall street and corporate america when he appointed TIMOTHY GEITHNER in the first days of his presidency. IF he wanted to fix the economic problem, there was only ONE choice, Brooksley Born. IF she would have refused, he should have enlisted her to help find the right person. i have zero respect for the man. his decision on BSL does not come as a surprise. he is consistent in his ability to disappoint and endanger americans. OBAMA is a whore through and through.

whore |hôr|

FYI, in 2012 i voted for the black socialist dude.

a stunningly brillant comment from vintage over at dogs bite decatur.

When Obama was an Illinois state Senator he co-sponsored Anna's Law which was named after a woman rendered and killed by two pit bulls while horseback riding. Anna's Law is a perverted pit breeders Bill of Rights.

For instance, when Rosie Humphries and her dog were killed by a chain breaking pit back in 2009, the owner received an obscene $150 ticket. Illinois Pit DBRFs have also skyrocketed since Anna's Law passed.

To his credit, never heard of a DBRF associated with the Portuguese Water Dog...the breed he keeps around HIS family!

There are a lot of congressional elections next year and Obama is trying to appeal to the white trash vote on behalf of the Democrats. According to the website "Stuff White Trash People Like," pit bulls are second on the list -- even higher than "settlement checks" and "gettin' on disability."

Obviously Obama wants to be hip and contemporary and his admin has some nutters on staff. Violence by pitbull is not a lesser violence than violence by guns, or knives. In fact violence by pitbulls is more traumatic. He needs to get a grip on reality.

He is just saying what the conventional wisdom says. Its bullshit, but I don't know how he could be expected to have the time to look into this stuff.

Here's an idea if we are going to allow the unregulated breeding of pit bulls at the current breeding standard and the White wants to meddle in a local matter:

We could fill the skies with armed drones...Then, when a group of kids are being attacked by a pit bull at a bus stop, the drone takes it out.

PS...I hope this doesn't mean pit bulls will soon be voting in elections without ID.

I shy away from politics, usually. My father's blood boils when he talks about Obama, and till now, I just felt a bit uncomfortable about it. Now, I will join him in that reaction. I so wish I didn't have to.

I don't know why the pit bull issue stabs straight to my heart; I stumbled across it last summer doing research for a dog paper. I've never had any experience with pits outside my sisters dog trying to get on my lap and pushing me around with her pretty pink nose. I'm not a crier anymore. Not usually. I cry maybe 1-2x a year, even when depressed or stressed. I've spaced myself emotionally (after experiencing domestic violence it was the only way to get through it all with some sanity) and it never really came back.

Until pitbulls.
I cried for little Dax. I cried for his dad and mom and his duped babysitter who now must live with crushing pain and guilt and nightmares and PTSD all because she had a good heart and good intentions but false information. I.cried reading his dad's recollection of the baby's mutilated body. I cried most of all for little Daxton... And nearly come toit every time the issue is on my mind and I look at my toddler, not much older than he.

Reading reading reading. The emotion is fierce and unabating. I get pissed. I cried for Daxton. An old childhood friend posted some disgusting meme with a toddler surrounded by 6-8 muscular pitbulls, captioned "safest little girl in the world". It was all I could do to keep myself in check and tell her she was propagating a very false and very deadly myth, and begged her to read up on a couple of links I provided. She recently posted one of those annoying "viscous dog attack!!" photos, with a child and Rottweilers. Different dog, but same underlying idiocy. She had facts served on a silver platter and responded with snark, dismissing any humanity, compassion, concern, caution, or thought for real victims... For the sake of anthropomorphizing animals that would eat her face as soon as take a dump.

Never defriended anyone for politics before. Pretty open minded that way... But this issue steams me up so bad I don't know if I can hold myself in check if she recklessly posts such bullshit one more time. There will be profanities, at the very least. I tried reason and appealing with kindness. If she throws that in the garbage, I'm sorry, but my vitriol just might rival the nutters.

Pardon the rambling. I have insomnia, am exhausted, and just... Don't have anywhere else to vent my feelings about so much pitbullshit.

The nutters are already taking to social media with the false claim that Obama's statement means that all US BSL laws have been nullified.

I am echoing the opinion of another "anonymous" above @12:40 p.m. --- there are great blogs on this topic (this one, dogsbite.org etc but as far as I can tell, there is no organized lobbying effort to fight back against this lunacy. Is anyone on this blog a community organizer, or wealthy and able to start funding organized efforts? It's crazy that no one is fighting back in an organized, effective manner.

april 29 said...

Anon 9:44, this is the problem. Pit bull advocacy is, to a great degree, funded by super wealthy pit bull owner Jane Berkey. She spreads her money around through her Animal Farm Foundation and the National Canine Research Foundation, which she also owns. Public safety advocates, frequently pit bull attack survivors, spend their own money. Donations to DogsBite.org a 503c are tax deductible and do make a huge impact on the problem. DBO is organized, effective, is cited in peer reviewed research, and submitted an amicus brief in the recent Maryland Court decision which still stands. I donate to DBO regularly and hope you will consider doing so as well.

That statement will please a greater number than it will piss off. "Haters" will be pissed, nutters will be pleased, and most in between won't even know it was written. It was a rather safe political move.

It also squares with the standard political pablum from the left (the right has it too, but it is a different sort).

Maybe I missed it, but I don't know why he even needs an opinion on this. I suppose politicians do that all the time: have an opinion and express even though they should be doing something else.

How long until nutters start citing Obama as one of their rank based upon this? That's going to be really annoying.

hell was going to freeze over before a black man took presidency , now he has pit bulls taking their place in society .

"Maybe I missed it, but I don't know why he even needs an opinion on this. I suppose politicians do that all the time: have an opinion and express even though they should be doing something else."

OT, but this is a pet peeve of mine: presidents/federal-level politicians making PUBLIC statements about municipal-level policy issues over which they have no control, no ability to legislate policy, and, most importantly, no constituency.

A national tragedy or struggle is one thing--like Sandy Hook or this awful Yosemite forest fire, which is really stressing me out--but comment on, say, a murder trial? Or BSL from Obama?

I chalk a lot of the phenomenon up to the media. They are selfish self-promotional morons who want a sound bite and ask inappropriate politicians inappropriate questions.

I almost majored in journalism. OH THANK GOD I switched.

Yes, this is going to be annoying having the nutters throw this is our faces until kingdom come, or until their pit bull expresses its genetic traits. Even then, they will want the mauler back. But what does "community based" mean? I'm taking that to mean that we, the people, the community, should put any pit bull we see expressing its genetic traits out of our misery.

I just looked over DBRFs since President Obama was inaugurated in Jan 2009....

He is sitting at 152 Deaths....96 of them by pits and 16 deaths by rottenmaulers. 73.6 of DBRFs will be the two breeds. Heavily regulated Wolf-hybrids produced just 1 DBRF.

Normally, one wouldn't associate DBRFS as a federal issue since Canine Safety is a State and Local matter...but he injected himself, so he owns it.

On the bright side, 164 Americans took life flight rides after pit maulings on his watch...The vast majority survived.

Just something to chew on...

Auntie Erica turned her back for a minute and her nannies happened to render him.

After pleading by the mommy who dropped him off in the reckless situation, the DA decided to drop all charges.

The are many others deemed "Accidents"

*Update: After the elderly man was killed by yard escaping pits in Houston last week, Prez Obama has now presided of 97 Pit Bull DBRFS. He is on pace for nearly 200 on his watch!

Maybe we should airdrop our excess pit bulls on the Syrians?!?
