How long before this child get's severely hurt. How can this moron sit there and laugh has his dog shows all the signs of an accident waiting to happen."

Wow... I don't even blame the pit bull there.

That child is too young to be around any dog. That family should wait a few years before adding any pets to the house, let alone a pit bull.

And pit bulls are NOT pets!

Absolutely horrible parenting. How can a parent sit by laughing, and another be holding a camera, while their pit bull growls, curls a lip at, and gives warning bites to a kid? Well, this says plenty about the people who keep pit bulls. No common sense at all.

I feel sorry for kids who have idiots and pitiots for parents.

You always read nutter comments regarding just this type of situation: "Oh my kids play with our pittie all the time, they can even pull his ears and tail and he doesn't hurt them. They were once used as nanny dogs in England because of how patient and gentle they are with children :)"

No dog should be harassed like this but *especially* not a freakin' pit bull! The signals are right there, loud and clear... talk about clueless.

Or the ole "My kids ride our pit bull like a horse"...Then after a kid is killed riding one like a horse it's the ole "That's irresponsible ownership and bad parenting!" routine....

exactly vintage. these lunatics remind me of this scene in casablanca

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?

Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.

Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

Geesh, I just had a run-in with a pit nutter type person in the world of parrots.

I'm thinking of maybe, someday (unless I come to my senses first) adopting or buying a small parrot. A green-cheeked conure is on my short list, and I've been doing lots of reading about them.

GCCs are described by nearly all owners as "nippy," and by many owners as "bitey"--particularly during the period from 3-12 months of age. GCCs are frequently found in parrot rescues, despite being touted as one of the "easiest/quietest/cuddliest" parrots. I assume most are given up during this biting phase.

My personal experience with 4 GCC youngsters at a bird fair last week are that they all bit me (and the breeder) non-stop during the 5-10 minutes they each spent on our fingers. These were flighted birds who could have flown away if afraid (which they weren't), but chose to hang out and have fun by pinching and twisting at our skin until we were covered with blood blisters. (We didn't react).

I found a video of a gentle-looking GCC today hanging out with a young child, playing with Legos, etc. The video description consisted of:

"This video gives you an insight into what Green Cheek Conures are like! They are Very Smart, Cute, Playful, and very Cuddly."

I wrote a comment mentioning the bitey period I'd read about and asking for the poster's experience with this. (I didn't mention it, but I really liked his bird and planned to follow up by asking for contact info for the breeder.)

The bird owner replied to my inquiry by saying I was an idiot for insinuating that parrots EVER bite. He then repeatedly said that "I must think the video is CGI" because the parrot didn't bite anybody in the 3-minute edited video. He claimed the bird in the video had only bitten, lightly, on one occasion in three years--and that every parrot he'd ever had was equally perfect.

(Note for people who haven't had parrots--most deliver a hard bite every week or two, if not more often. That's even parrots in good homes with experienced owners using positive training).

I wrote back a friendly-worded PM saying that there are 1 million parrots in rescues because buyers don't realize that parrots are NOT 24/7 gentle, domesticated animals, and that they can be both bitey and noisy despite enormous amounts of training.

I then mentioned that on my own parrot videos, I had added detailed information to the descriptions explaining the less-than-wonderful parts of parrot ownership, and that I think it's always a good idea to have some kind of disclaimer on videos that present parrots as easy-going, completely quiet and completely non-aggressive.

When I mentioned I was a semi-pro animal trainer, he claimed to be a pro animal trainer (which I don't believe) and a breeder (which I totally DO). Then he blocked me from commenting on his channel.

I hadn't made a single nasty comment about his bird or video--just mentioned that it is common for parrots to nip or bite and that it's good for potential buyers to know that. But I had to be blocked, because I might scare away future customers!

Nutters--you can find them everywhere, and even outside the world of pit bulls.

That poor kid. Being set up to fail, and with a shit bull as their choice of dog it will be a horrible life altering failure.

S.K.Y. have you considered Cockatiels? My Mom raised them, and ours were gentle and friendly. They are probably not as bright and personable as Parrots, but I had one that would sit on my shoulder or head and groom my hair--very relaxing, and very pretty little birds! And no biting, at least not ours

SKY: FWIW, I heartily recommend a Sengal parrot, or one of the other Poicephalus parrots.

Senegals are not as beautiful or flashy as many other pet-parrot species...but they are relatively low-maintenance, they are very QUIET compared to any conure/New World parrot. My Senegal only makes a racket for 30 minutes, twice a day--once in the morning, and once in the evening. Otherwise, she's pretty quiet.

Also, they seldom pluck and they are not very destructive (my bird does love to shred books...I sacrifice a few garage-sale hardback to her).

My bird doesn't talk much, but she does mimic mechanical noises, like the sound of the microwave and the cell ringtone of her last owner, or a truck backing up.

I'd LOVE to have an Timneh African Gray or an Ekkie, but I am unable to care for one adequately at this time...and I am also having doubts about whether those species of birds should be kept in captivity at all outside of an aviary environment. The PetFinder ads for parrots rip my heart out...and the cockatoos have it the worst. Every time I see a cockatoo chick in a Petland Discount store, I wince.

I think that most parrot breeders are awful. I did buy from a breeder once, but if I knew then what I know now...I wouldn't have done it.

That said, I remember that video of your African Grey Clover (?). She looked great! I enjoyed watching her figure out all those scavenger toys.

Thanks,

MM

The pit bull or child needs to be removed from that home.

SadFalada,

Thanks for the cockatiel recommendation--several people have suggested they would be a good match for me. I've always thought of them--and parakeets--as too "easy" and too common: suitable only for children and the elderly. Not a "cool" parrot to take out in harness riding around on my shoulder. Geesh, maybe I have a version of the pit nutter gene that causes them to adopt dangerous dogs rather than Beagles and Golden Retrievers! Okay, I promise to look into cockatiels!

Miss Margo,

The Poicephalus, particularly brown-headed parrots are at the VERY top of my list (followed by linnies). I'd heard brown-headed were sweeter and quieter than Senegals, and am trying to meet some to find out. I've e-mailed a local rescue to ask if they ever have Poicephalus parrots that could use a long-term foster home--I thought that would be a good way to get acquainted, and could lead to me adopting one.

In the meantime, I was investigating green-cheeked conures, since they are fairly common in rescues.

I agree that African Greys and Cockatoos are a lot of parrot, and belong in an aviary situation. They are obviously out of their element living as sole parrots in a home environment, even when uncaged.

and the parent needs to be charged with reckless endangerment.

Wow just wow.

You can not pick your parents.

Poor kid probably has a life flight in his near future.

I agree this should constitute reckless endangerment.

SHOCKING is all I can say.

Reminds me of the now famous baby and the Mastiff photo.

Hang on to this vid. If the kid gets mauled, it should be used in evidence against its parents.

I could swear I hear the asshole adult making the annoying Cesar Millan tsch! sound over and over. I want to leap into the video and grab that baby -- I even feel sorry for the dog. Fucking morons.

tropical storms said...

As much as I despise the fancy they at least are not this fucking stupid.

Anonymous said...

Dear god. The dog was giving all of the warning signs of "leave me alone" and the fucktard parents thought it was funny! 1 the child should NEVER have been allowed near a dog like this. And 2 as soon as the dog (pit bull or any other dog/ animal) sent out those warning signs the parents should have pulled the child away and told them 'NO" and taught them respectful behavior. This is a serious accident waiting to happen for the child, and/or death for the dog.

I really hope someone found a way to contact this family and tell them the truth about pitbulls. Now, it's highly possible they have already seen the facts and chosen dogma over responsibility and reason anyway.... (In which case I eagerly agree with this vid being used as evidence against them later on) but would want it mentioned on the off-chance these people are duped and even more impossibility that they would respond appropriately.

Given the stupidity and recklessness of this video.... That hypothesis/possibility is a snowball in hell :(

The owner is at fault. I have two dogs and they don't dare leave the bathroom after being washed. They resist the urge to run around like crazy. Rather they wait for me to be done with them.

They are not pit bulls, but large, powerful breeds. Mastiff. Not English.

They know they are bottom of the line. And my kids, they don't dare do anything to my children, or any child. It is my house. My children's house, not the dogs' house. No 'tsch' needed.
