last week, this dufus caught my eye. i found this idiot commenting on the public forum about SB 75, south dakota's answer to LEDY'S mauling free for all.

that's right. this bozo wants to make sure a mutant already living in the city will be grandfathered in, if south dakota passes a STATE law that PROHIBITS cities from enacting breed bans. seriously, how are we losing to people too stupid to read a fucking headline correctly?


and if that wasn't ridiculous enough, BRENT TOELLNER paid craven a visit.

By "stealth bombs" I suppose you mean that these initiatives are publicly available bills proposed and supported by nearly every expert in the field of canine management and similar to bills that have been passed in 4 other states in the last 18 months?! What this is is governments listening to experts to fight against ineffective and resource-wasting laws.That's not "stealth". That's practical.

i responded. an anonymous commenter responded. and TOELLNER responded again. woops! this time he was signed into his blogger account. ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!

TOELLNER copied his comment into the clip board, deleted the original comment and then re-posted the same exact word for word comment, but this time he signed in as anonymous.

too late. TOELLNER doesn't realize that only the pop up comment window deleted his name. his name is still in the blog post and in dashboard comments AND most importantly, in the email alert.

in the meantime, real pit bulldog expert tropical storms leaves a couple of comments and TOELLNER replies again, anonymously. he thinks he will "educate" tropical storms. lol. by now, my sides hurt from laughing so hard and my throat is raw and i start coughing from all of the laughter. then scorched earth, myself, and other readers respond to KC blowhard. it's a fun read. i will address his comments that were directed to me.

TOELLNER tried to give me a lesson in civics.

true, most laws are not put up for a public vote. most laws are either too mundane for the average person to be bothered with or too esoteric for the average person to fully grasp. i suspect the average person also does not want to be distracted from their video games and prime time tv shows. what percentage go to the public for a vote, i haven't a clue but it is common to take issues directly to the people, especially west of the mississippi. i found a website that keeps track of state initiatives and referendums. please note that this website is not current. for whatever reason, the organization who tracked these, stopped in 2001. you can click on the number and view the initiatives that were introduced. here is a small sample.

these numbers are nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider the fact that the population of the entire state of south dakota is less than the greater seattle area. glancing over the laws that were introduced by citizens you will find they are usually of a controversial nature, assisted suicide, gay marriage, marijuana, and a lot of animal related issues like declawing, puppy mills, foie gras, factory farming, the banning of steel leg hold traps. there is nothing esoteric about these issues, but they are controversial and ignite passions on both sides. seems to me that the regulation of dogs bred for the savage sport of dog fighting would be right at home in the citizen initiative process.

obviously taking the pit bull issue directly to the voters is not an option in the states that do not allow the initiative process but for those who do, this is the perfect venue to sort out this mess.

a perversion of everything normal dogs should do. What they've created is a canine psychopath.

First of all, passing breed specific laws are going to be useless if animal control is too under-funded or too incompetent to round up free-roaming dogs under a city's leash law (which almost every community has at this point). That would be a fantastic place to start -- enforcing leash laws. I don't care if the dog is a German Shepherd, a mastiff, a pit bull, a lab, whatever, it shouldn't be a nuisance running at large.

underfunded? true. and pit bull owners are the biggest scofflaws of licensing which animal control is dependent on to do their job. additionally, pit bulls consume the lion's share of AC resources. incompetent? yeah, i agree somewhat with you here. many ACOs have been "trained" by the likes of LEDY VANKAVAGE and JANE BERKEY. and in my book, that would automatically earn someone a label of incompetent. GSDs, labs running at large? no argument here. no dog should be allowed to run at large regardless of breed.

Secondly, which would you rather the under-resource Animal Control officers spend their time on: trying to determine if the family pet owned by one neighbor that has never been aggressive, or roaming at large is a pit bull? Or focusing energy on the chained dog that is showing all kinds of signs of aggression but is "just an Akita" so not worth the focus?

now you're just being an asshole. you've spent too much time reading white papers from hill & knowlton, er, i mean guerrilla economics.

There are a lot of ways to focus laws based on the behavior of the dog, not the breed. You won't read about those from "Dawn James" or Colleen Lynn, but they exist. And it's why we should listen to experts on how to write and enforce such laws. People deserve to be safe from dogs -- regardless of breed. And using resources to target specific dogs because of their breed even though they aren't aggressive is not the solution: regardless of what "dawn james" tries to persuade you into.

it is pretty rare to see me talking about laws, not my thing. i'm far too angry and abrasive to play the game of politics successfully. my thing is really about exposing the lies and liars and arming people with lethal weapons and knowledge about pit bulls and their advocates. but i will make an exception and discuss my personal views on dog legislation below. i doubt that you will like them.

#1) Pit bulls are not molasser breeds. Again, this is why you get info from real experts, and not Merrit Clifton.

yes. pit bulldogs are a molosser breed. i didn't learn that from Merritt and neither did tropical storms. i spend almost all of my time gathering information from experts like JESSUP and dog fighters. if you actually read JESSUP instead of AFF, BF and badrap, you would never make such an ignorant statement.

#2) The problem with your solution is that by the very act of singling out certain breeds you make it infinitely harder for people to get insurance.

i have mixed feelings on this. on the one hand, i feel that insurance companies should not be able to deny coverage without a good reason, ie, actual aggressive behavior (but then again, that good reason should result in a dirt nap) but on the other hand, i am not comfortable with the government telling private businesses they must insure someone. like you, i sometimes have a problem with the government dictating to private businesses. i also have a problem with the beltway dictating to missouri and missouri dictating to st. louis, kansas city and clayton.

Most people who have home owner's insurance have insurance from dog bites....so figuring out how to tag it onto renter's insurance and how to get all insurance companies to quit singling out certain breeds provides the most protection for victims. Instead, Colleen and "Dawn" actually advocate for the opposite.

"MOST people" is just not good enough TOELLNER, especially when it comes to the catastrophic injuries that require multiple surgeries and years of rehabilitation that pit bulldogs are oh so famous for. too many people fall through the cracks. they are left with physical, psychological and financial injuries. i have always advocated for compulsory insurance for all dog owners. (btw, that means homeless people can not own dogs at all) doesn't matter if you have a puggle or pibble, everyone pays, just like obamacare but better! of course, the insurance industry will be free to crunch the numbers and determine actuarial risk and thus set premiums. $50K @$5/yr for puggle, $100K @$100/y for labs, $100K @$500/yr for GSD and $500K @$1000/yr for frankenmaulers. seems fair to me.

i strongly favor the "ban stupid owners" approach and what better way than background checks! felons would be prohibited from owning fighting, baiting or guarding dogs. (fyi, you wouldn't have to twist my arm to extend that to ALL dogs). anyone with multiple misdemeanor convictions would also be prohibited from owning fighting, baiting or guarding dogs.

i favor licensing owners and registering dogs, just like we do with guns and cars. anyone caught violating the compulsory licensing, registering, vaccinating and insuring of their dogs would also be slapped with a felony and a lifetime ban on owning dogs.

pretending your dog is a service animal? felony and lifetime ban on owning dogs.

i also favor sterilizing all grippers, so they would eventually go extinct. i don't see this as an either/or issue, either target a specific breed OR implement tougher general dog laws. i think both strategies should be implemented.

off property attacks would result in mandatory depraved indifference charges and a life time ban on owning any dog. in home, intra familial attacks would result in mandatory domestic assault charges. you want these ugly things treated like family? fine. how about charges of elder abuse and child abuse. no exceptions. and of course, a life time ban on owning any dog.

even minor bites from an unvaccinated dog that results in the person having to undergo the series of rabies shots - felony charges and a life time ban on owning any dogs.

your pit bulldog mauls my pointer border collie mutt? felony animal cruelty charges and a life time ban on owning any dog. your GSD mauls my pony? felony animal cruelty charges and a lifetime ban on owning any dog.

the accused dogs would be housed in secure facilities. the owner must post a $10,000 bond to cover the cost of the quarantine and boarding until the trial and to deter from theft. anyone who fails to hand over a dog accused of attacking would be thrown in jail until the dog is surrendered to the authorities and of course charged with another felony.

i liked ohio's law, a lot. they simply said, pit bulls are different and should be treated as such. i thought ohio tried to meet the needs of both parties. but pit bull zealots like LEDY VANKAVAGE are greedy pigs. they wanted it all and they got it.

oh and if you think i am just hard on pit bull owners, think again. we also need tough DWI laws, they are way too lax. if i had my way, they would look very similar to the dog laws i briefly outlined above. americans feel far too entitled. americans regard literally everything as their god given right. i think that needs to change.

there is no such thing as a dull moment when it comes to pit bulls and their owners. last week, yet another damaged and disenfranchised pit nutter made the headlines of bizarro world. and once again, we have the real world version of events to compare to the lunatic fringe's interpretation of the events. skooch over DARLA, you have company!



leave it to pit nutters to exploit someone's personal tragedy to advance the cause of gripping dogs. the recent suicide of NICK SANTINO and the "forced" euthanasia of SANTINO'S pit bull mix ROCCO, are being blamed on grumpy neighbors and the evils of breed specific legislation.

here's what we know from mainstream media's version of events, for unspecified reasons, a condo association tightened up their dog policy in 2010 (i bet $100 there is a scary elevator encounter with a pit bull). one of their new rules included a pit bull ban. SANTINO'S pit mix was grandfathered in but SANTINO was restricted from using the elevator and he could not leave the dog alone for more than 9 hours. reasonable restrictions for the safety and welfare of both ROCCO and the other residents. we also know that SANTINO was facing fines for barking and more importantly, SANTINO'S own vet reported that ROCCO was becoming "increasingly more aggressive". rather than move or place his best friend in a new home, the struggling actor had his dog euthanized, called an ex-girl friend, then took an overdose.

here is what the pit nutters report, BSL took two innocent lives. the mean grumpy neighbors harassed a 47 yr old man to the point where he killed his "healthy, friendly pit bull" and then killed himself.

reality check: healthy, well adjusted people do not take their supposedly "healthy and friendly" pit mix to the vet to be euthanized, then go home, call an ex-girl friend and kill themselves. i find a few of the details significant.

first, he killed himself ON his birthday.
second, it appears that he had a prescription for a drug with the ability to deliver a lethal dose. (possibly already taking something for depression or to help him sleep)
third, he called an EX girl friend (possibly yet another failure contributing to his decision to end his life)
fourth, on his facebook page, he stressed how ROCCO saved HIS life, not vice versa.
fifth, despite the fact that this orphan had earned an MBA and started his own business (apparently successful), he was not happy with his career and wanted to become an actor.
sixth, he was not just struggling to make it as an actor, according to the imdb, he was failing miserably. between 1995 and 2011, SANTINO landed 8 menial roles, including "club owner", and "butcher guy". his billings were nearly dead last.

THE PIT BULL EVANGELISTS

the title of C MARABITO'S insane blatherings this week: Two unnecessary deaths due to BSL. MARABITO claims the "down on his luck actor" succumbed to the pressure of the condo bullies. a neighbor with the last name of CLEARY (any relations?) is quoted "People were complaining about his dog. It was open season on him." the BOTTOM LINE for MARABITO, "this man lost his life and his dog due to breed specific legislation." the bottom line, i have a bridge i'd like to sell MARABITO and her gullible followers.

surprisingly, CINDY MARABITO lost to the competition on this one.

Micaela Myers at stubbydog.org, where they are "reinventing the pit bull" lead with this, "This past week, the tragic result was two deaths – one of a 47-year-old man and the second a healthy, friendly pit bull. "

i am fascinated by the amount of effort that went into describing the pit bull and how little mention there was of the other half of the double tragedy. all of the nutters seem to think that BSL and his grumpy neighbors pushed this man over the edge and prompted him to kill himself. healthy, well adjusted people first of all would not kill their healthy, well adjusted dog over this and certainly a healthy well adjusted person would not kill themselves over this. you don't need to be a Durkheim scholar or have a PhD in psychology to grasp this simple concept.

Micaela Myers ends her tribute to a down on your luck, depressed pit bull owner on this note "The sad story of Nick Santino and Rocco also illustrates the need for public awareness toward canine housing discrimination so that landlords and complex management can understand the consequences of their misguided policies." MICAELA feels this tragedy illustrates pibble's plight. not a single word about the need for suicide intervention or the 100 american people who succeed in taking their lives and the 800-2500 that attempt but fail to take their lives EVERY day in the united states. that tragedy pales in comparison to the plight of dangerous pit bulls.

Animal Farm Foundation will lead a peaceful vigil to remember Nick Santino, Rocco the "pit bull" dog, and all victims of canine discrimination. We are devastated by the inhumanity and injustice that Mr. Santino and Rocco experienced prior to their deaths.

Our goal for this vigil is to end the unnecessary, fear-based discrimination that some "pit bull" dogs and their owners face, particularly with regard to housing matters. We wish to empower community members with information and resources to replace fear with facts, and to advocate for equal treatment and opportunity for "pit bull" dogs and their owners.

Dog bites are a serious public health concern in the United States and across the world. They result in substantial emotional and physical trauma and in a substantial economic cost to the victims and to society. Fortunately, fatal dog attacks are rare, but there seems to be a distinct relationship between the severity and lethality of an attack and the breed of dog responsible. The unacceptable actuarial risk associated with certain breeds of dogs (specifically, pit bulls) must be addressed.

DECEIVE, INVEIGLE, OBFUSCATE

“You find out a lot of information when you deal with the circumstances. That leads you down a different road on what causes the bites and attacks and it's not the breed of dog. It's usually the people who are involved and the surrounding situation that's involved.” Brent Toellner

BRENT TOELLNER, the man who makes his living convincing people to purchase things they don't need, can't afford and are sometimes harmful, told nbc action news, 'it's not the dog, it's the owner'. There's one way to test that theory. Take any serious pit bull mauling and substitute other breeds. Take 85 yr old Rosie Humphreys for example. Rosie and her small poodle were killed by BRIAN PENNINGTON'S loose purebred american pit bull terrier during a routine daily walk. Now try substituting golden retriever in that sentence. How about dachshund? collie? Absurd, isn't it? If breed is truly irrelevant and the problem is truly irresponsible owners, then ANY breed of dog owned by BRIAN PENNINGTON would have yielded the same deadly result.

TOELLNER'S criticisms go into more detail on his blog. One of the criticisms is valid but that does not invalidate the study. My issue with the study is the citing of AKC registered dogs. The APBT, the breed that makes up the bulk of "pit bulls" is not recognized in the AKC registry and not all pit bulls involved in fatal attacks are purebred. The inclusion of AKC numbers only opens the door for pit nutter criticism. Though their method is accepted in academic circles, I would have preferred the authors left that data out.

TOELLNER has a long list of complaints; lack of peer review, small sample, the use of animal people and dogsbite.org data (congratulations guys!), and the fact that the authors failed to consult with animal behaviorists and with ms dog bite herself, KAREN DELISE. These are major flaws in his mind that invalidate the study, in HIS mind. TOELLNER praised the authors for stating the obvious, pit bulls do not have locking jaws or an exceptionally powerful bite, but then admits that he is puzzled that the authors still came to the conclusion that pit bulls posed a greater danger than other dogs. At the end of this blog post, pit bull experts DIANE JESSUP and CARL SEMEMCIC will explain why pits are more dangerous.

I find it rather amusing that TOELLNER vigorously condemns the San Antonio University Hospital study, yet he finds no fault with the self report questionnaire study that found dachshunds to be the "biggest biters".

KAREN DELISE (a former vet tech), the great neo cortex's official condemnation of the study begins with the fact that SURGEONS have dared to express an opinion about dangerous dogs. Those opinions are reserved for herself and handful of highly trained gifted supreme beings endowed with mystical powers. DELISE thinks surgeons should stick with surgery. I can certainly relate to that sentiment, I always find myself thinking along those lines whenever the nutter lawyers like LEDY VANKAVAGE, DEBRA BRESCH, LAURA ALLEN, NATHAN WINOGRAD, KEVIN THOMASON open their mouths about animals. They should stay out of the animal AND medical business.

The vet tech writes "Those, whose professional lives are spent with pets and their owners, have been consistent in their recommendations: education of adults and children concerning dogs and dog behavior; and humane care custody and control of all dogs." This cited quote from DELISE is attributed to Texas vet BONNIE BEAVER who under oath testified in 1991, "By its origin, a pit bull is a fighting dog that takes very little stimulous to initiate aggression, and it will continue to fight regardless of what happens" and "Pit bulldogs have been responsible for about 70 percent of the deaths of humans killed by dogs since 1979."

No critique of this study would be complete without the classic pit bull sleight of hand trick, Find The Pit Bull. "There is robust evidence that guesses even by animal professionals of the breed or breeds that make up dogs whose ancestry is not known to them correlate extremely poorly with DNA analyses of the same dogs." Rule number #2 in the pit bull advocacy handbook, ALWAYS cast doubt on breed identification!

The vet tech continues "The authors seem to have begun their research with a belief regarding “pit bull” dogs, and then exploited the tools of epidemiology to legitimize that belief." ALL science starts with a belief. The belief that scientists go into research without any preconceived notions is absurdly naive. The former vet tech/"research director" fails to recognize that ALL SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY BEGINS WITH A HYPOTHESIS which states a belief or expectation. Without a belief, expectation or hypothesis, it is impossible to conduct scientific inquiry!!! Karen, objectivity in science is an illusion and only unethical researchers lie to their audiences and themselves with fantastic claims of absolute detachment and neutrality.

The evil genius makes a big deal about the percentage of children in emergency rooms. She claims only 2% of all child visits to the E.R are for dog bites, not 20% as the San Antonio University Hospital surgeons suggest. But the vet tech's only accomplishment is exposing herself as JANE BERKEY'S hired gun and the vet tech only succeeds at fooling her gullible drones with the attack on the authors' one in five visits. A 1998 AMA study, (which you can find at dogsbite.org along with lots of other studies and great information), found that 23% of the children who visit the emergency room, are there for dog bites, in other words - roughly one in five.

*I was extremely disappointed that KAREN DELISE didn't take this opportunity to expand on her theory of the meteorologic effects on dog aggression. Oh well, maybe next time.

JIM CROSBY also had plenty to say about the study. The most surprising criticism came in the form of doubting the number of pit bulls shot and killed. The authors of the San Antonio University Hospital study claim that 1.5 pit bulls are shot and killed each day. I tracked shootings/stabbings from 10.07.09-10.19.10 and came up with 631 shooting/stabbing incidences. (Dogsbite.org tracked pit bull shootings from 2008-2009 and has come up up with similar numbers.) The overwhelming majority of incidences that I documented were shootings opposed to stabbings and the overwhelming majority of dogs were "pit bulls". Of course not all were killed but I don't have a hard time believing that 546 pit bulls are shot to death each year, especially when you consider that only a fraction of the shootings receive media coverage. Pit nutter PAT MILLER states the media reports 250-300 dogs are shot by police each year and estimates another 1000 shootings that are not picked up by the media. That is 3.56 per day, shot by JUST the police! MILLER credits her data to ASPCA's RANDALL LOCKWOOD.

uncharacteristically, WHITEWASH JIMMY expressed empathy for the human victims when he criticized the authors for including the "flashy but irrelevant" statistic; 94% of the attacks were unprovoked, adding "Small children do not have the capacity to knowingly provoke a dog. Older kids should be given the benefit of the doubt unless observed tormenting a dog."Traditionally, pit nutters search desperately outside of DNA to explain and excuse pit bull aggression. Their first line of defense is always - the dog was provoked. Congratulations JIMMY, I believe this is a pit nutter first! And i will be sure to credit you in the future.

WHITEWASH JIMMY'S analysis of the surgeons' study goes above and beyond the picayune by pointing to an age error of a victim. The authors claim a victim was 11 months old while the "well covered" attack by the media reported the victim to be 7 months. "A small error-but a factual error that knocks one more pebble from a crumbling edifice. You would think that an attending physician might just know how old his patient was." Funny how the nutters always caution us against believing the media when it comes to dog attacks and pit bulls, yet JIMMY is steadfast in his belief that the media reported the victim's age correctly and the suregons reported incorrectly. laughable.

WHITEWASH JIMMY attempted to bring his small band of zealous devotees to their knees in awe. Thumping his superior on scene fatal attack investigator chest, he points out that the dog responsible for the december 2008 death of 62 yr old Chester Jordan in Muncie, Indiana was in fact a Dogo Argentino gripping dog. But hey, in his generous spirit, he would give the authors the benefit of the doubt and call the dogo a pit bull. I don't track fatal attacks and I don't follow them closely, so I consulted with people who do and who I value the opinions of, Merritt Clifton and Colleen Lynn. The attack was in fact in November, NOT December. A small error-but a factual error that knocks one more pebble from a crumbling edifice. You would think that an on site investigator might just know what month he traveled to Indiana. Colleen's memory of that attack was just as clear as if it happened yesterday. She remembered seeing the news footage of an unbloodied white dog running around in the background while the authorities removed the two bloodied brindle pit dogs from the home. Colleen also remembered BRENT TOELLNER first positing that the "killer" white dog may have been a dogo or an ambull. And sure enough, there it is. And here are the two bloody brindle bulldogs.

LEDY VANKAVAGE'S attack on the San Antonio study was addressed in detail HERE, but I have a few thoughts of my own to add. LEDY is very good, maybe the best at rallying the pit nutter troops over at change.org and stretching or misinterpreting the truth, I can't tell which. Perhaps a poll is needed to help me determine whether she is morally corrupt or intellectually bankrupt. to quote LEDY, "One glaring example of the report's shoddy work that they cite is that the authors state that one in every five children visits an emergency room because of a dog bite." That is quite different from what the authors ACTUALLY wrote, "One of every 5 emergency room visits by children is related to dog bites." If you do not understand the difference between these two statements then you must immediately leave this blog and go back to school. I also have to wonder if we just witnessed the birth of a lie or if researchers should take this as a sign for the need to dumb down the language of future studies for easier consumption by pit bull advocates.

VANKAVAGE, DELISE et al feel that doctors are not qualified to make statements about dog dangerousness. I think emergency room medical staff, plastic surgeons and first responders are the MOST qualified to make these statements. We are talking about HUMAN injury and death after all.

MORE TEXAS DOG BITE STUDIES

The results of the San Antonio University Hospital dog bite study validates previous Texas dog bite data. The state of Texas has a decent history of documenting dog bites. in 2000, Dr David Blocker presented a paper on dog bites from Bexar County (San Antonio - the exact same region that involved the University Hospital study) found the Odds ratios for each of the five most commonly biting dog breeds versus all others presented similar findings (Table 30). The odds of a Pit Bull in Bexar County causing a bite were 5 times greater than the odds for all other breeds combined, at 4.9 to 1. Chow Chows and Rottweilers also had odds ratios significantly greater than the average, at 2.9 to 1 and 1.8 to 1, respectively. The odds ratios for German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers were significantly lower than the average, at 0.67 to 1 and 0.26 to 1.

Medical doctors Stephen F. Viegas, Jason H. Calhoun and Jon Mader published an article on the savage pit bull attack of an 83 yr old man that resulted in extensive injuries requiring an amputation and later died in the Volume 84 November 1988 issue of Texas Medicine, Pit bull attack: case report and literature review.

"During the one-year period between June 1986 and June 1987, 14 people were killed by dogs in the United States. Ten of those 14 deaths are attributed to pit bulls. Thus, 71% of the deaths during that period were attributed to a type of dog that accounts for 1% of the US dog population (8,10,22)."

"Most breeds do not repeatedly bite their victims; however, a pit bull attack has been compared to a shark attack and often results in multiple bites and extensive soft tissue loss (3,10). Hmmm, 71% of the people killed by dogs from june 86 - june 87, were killed by pit bulls is consistent with DR BEAVER'S 1991 sworn testimony. Weren't the 1980's supposed to be the decade of the doberman?

The Texas Department of Health used to track animal attacks and submit yearly summaries.

As well as the number and percentage of each breed for attacks so serious, hospitalization was required.

Did you notice how the pit bull was number 4 for dog bites but jumped to the # 1 spot for hospitalizations?

I don't have the summaries for 2000 and 2001 but at some point the Department of Health stopped parsing out the percentage of breeds that required hospitalizations. Pit nutter tantrums, I suspect. Those tantrums most likely put an end to this tracking of animal attacks/bites altogether, as 2002 seems to be the last year for these bite summaries.

PIT BULLS ARE DIFFERENT!

the pit nutters just can't let this one go. every time i turn around there is another website, petition, memorial, candle light vigil, protest or moronic blogger venting and speculating about this shooting. most of the focus is on PARROT and how he was only killed over this "scuffle" because of the way he looked. there is no shortage of idiots on this front. and most of them either want to blame the poodle mix or place equal blame on both dogs. the nutters describe it as "a scuffle broke out" and minimize the damage to the victim. but some of the complaints center around the police shooting a gun in a crowded street fair. this is a complaint that surfaces from time to time. whether it is law enforcement or a private citizen, pit nutters seem very concerned about the danger of firearms. their fear seems to border on, dare i say it, hysteria. i think for the most part, they are attempting to deflect the focus and blame away from their dangerous frankenamulers but sometimes, i think it is just good old fashioned naiveté about what their wiggle butts are capable of.

FIVE SECONDS. one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, four one thousand, five one thousand. a lot can happen in 5 seconds. i could shoot 15 photos and freeze 15 raw gritty moments in the time it took you to count 5 seconds.

SHIRLEY THISTLETHWAITE has two issues with the cop. first she claims he unnecessarily endangered the public by firing his weapon at a crowded street fair, despite the fact that the officer had the presence of mind to throw the dog down a stairwell before shooting it, and she claims that Officer Fisk knocked down the mutant and "then put a knee in the dog’s back and pulled his forelegs behind him as one would do with an armed criminal. i believe that if this had actually occurred there would be a photo of it, there would be outrage from me as well, and there would be a different story altogether. i believe that twisting a dog's leg behind its back would render it inoperable. the dog would not have been able to walk away. if you want to see what this looks like, go here. what really bothers me about this particular blog is the notion that guns are somehow more dangerous than dogs. i would argue that dogs are more dangerous as they can be unpredictable, difficult to physically control and impossible to reason with.

consider the story of a 6 yr old girl who stepped outside of her home to go to school and was attacked by her family's 2 pit bulls in the yard. the mother attempted to pull the dogs off. called for help from the father. when the police arrived, they shot the dogs and accidentally hit the girl. compare the raw grittiness of these photos:

in an attempt to clear up confusion, kc says that requiring proper containment, ie FENCES, is a "ridiculous restriction" and that only after attempts are made to rehabilitate aggressive dogs will they be euthanized.

No Kill relies on having un-restrictive animal control laws. Pet limit laws decrease the number of foster homes that are available. Mandatory spay/neuter laws, Breed Specific Laws, and many tethering laws only encourage animal control officers to confiscate animals from homes — increasing the number of animals that need to be found homes. The first option should always be to keep an animal in the home it is already in and improve its life there vs confiscation.

Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion out there.

kc also feels that there are already enough homes for all of the dogs and cats in shelters. i would agree but i would qualify that. if you counted all of the of people who are allergic to them, all of the people who can not have them because of lease agreements, all of the people who choose not to have a dog because they either don't like them or are afraid them, all of the people who choose not to have a dog because they are smart enough to know they don't have the time, money or skill to properly care for them, all of the people who already have pets but have no fucking business owning them in the first place (you know, we read about them all of the time on the paper) and of course all of the people who already have dogs, sometimes over the legal limit, then SURE there are plenty homes.

what really pisses me off, these nokill fanatics always frame the argument in such a way as to make everyone else look kill happy. the number of animals that we kill each year because of human greed, error, stupidity and selfishness is unacceptable and extremely disturbing. but what is more disturbing to me than a humane death, are the dogs/cats housed in above ground pet cemeteries (i stole that phrase from diane jessup) sometimes in filthy and unhealthy conditions. the number of dogs/cats that are turned away at the nokill shelter for lack of space and then are abandoned and left to fend for themselves or killed outright in a less humane manner by their owners, and the number of dogs/cats living with their mentally ill owners aka hoarders.

there really is an easy solution to this problem and that is to prevent the litters in the first place. but the true libertarian kooks and those who ride the libertarian wave out of convenience always cry foul. they claim we are crushing their (selfish) constitutional rights.
