did someone say phlebotomy?

PHLEBOTOMIST DOG!

roger, we have translation.

A Pit Bull dog attacked its owner on Sunday night (22), and had to be shot 5 times by the Municipal Guard. The attack occurred at a residence on Wenceslas Braz boulevard, Vila Guaira, a neighborhood near the center of Curitiba [Brazil].

The supervisor of the Municipal Guard of Curitiba, Laurindo Filho Court, said the guards who arrived tried to separate the dog by shooting pepper spray at the pitbull. They hoped this would make the dog release the arm of the retired Dejail Cezar Gonçalves, age 54, but the tactic did not work.

"Realizing that the dog would also attack the head and neck of the owner, we fired two shots, which still did not stop the attack. Finally three more shots were fired into the pitbull, causing him to finally release the arm of the owner."

After losing so much blood, Goncalves was taken seriously ill and injured in both arms to the Worker's Hospital of Curitiba. There was a suspicion that he might have to have his arm amputated, but the hospital said the patient is doing well in the ward and performed a skin graft surgery on Friday (27).

The dog was referred to the Center of Zoonosis of Curitiba still alive, but succumbed to his injuries and died. According to Esther Lim's wife, Gill, the Pit Bull, named Jackal, was 4 years old. He was docile and even licked the feet of her husband.

"We treated that dog like a baby. We love animals. We've lost two mutts, who died of old age. Now we lost the Jackal. My husband never abused any animal. The attack is inexplicable," laments Esther.

Although docile, she confesses that the dog had attacked Gill's brother a few months ago, causing injury. Pollyanna Fernanda Souza, a neighbor of the couple and that appears in the video asking for help from the people who watched and filmed the attack, also recalled the first attack of the Jackal. According to her, the dog advanced on the face of Gill's brother and tore his nose.

The neighbor strongly denies that Gill was violent with the pitbull. "I never saw anyone abusing the Jackal, on the contrary. The dog was very well maintained, fat, vaccinated, fed with a quality diet and loved the owners. It was just love. In fact I did not know he was called Jackal, as Mr. . Cezar always called him "Baby."

The city police officers who arrived reported that they smelled alcohol on the victim, a suspicion denied by Pollyanna. "It only smelled of blood. My sister helped clean the yard after and said it was still smelling of blood."

thank you sharon

This is a "Responsible Owner"...Nice dog houses, Bowls to eat from...Nice fences and pens...He has such great control over his dog...Look at that dogs tail wagging like its doing nothing wrong...just playing...arm half eaten off and the owner sits there saying No !!! No !!! to the playful tail-wagging dog.....If it had been a child...It would be the owners fault...Who's fault is this ???

also note that the dog is not scarred and not starved like a fighting dog. in fact, he looks a little too well cared for.

Thanks to LiveLeak for this gem. I hadn't visited in some amount of time, but when I hit the old bookmark, BAM! - a pit bull vid at the top of the featured videos!

I wish I could understand what he is saying. Is it, "Look at his tail go - he's just playing - it's all in how you raise them!"

Quite a crowd hanging around just watching. I wonder what they were saying. Was it, "Sorry man. I don't wanna get my new shoes and dress slacks bloody... you just keep raising Ol Gator the way you see fit?"

Better him than somebody's lab, I say.

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

probably something like "all dogs bite" and "they were bred to be nurses aid!!!" and "there's no such thing as locking jaws".

i read a few of the comments on liveleak. one dufus was critical of the camera man for not helping. WTF?

"Better him than somebody's lab, I say."

or a stray cat.

DubV said...

That guy lost a ton of blood. It's unclear whether he would make it at the end. Liveleak video comment sections are much more fun than on youtube. The nutters have not yet infiltrated liveleaks as a pack, so you get a better sampling of the typical opinion/reaction than on nuttertube.

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

i am not sure if people realize this but you can not upload videos to liveleak for free - there is a monthly fee. that automatically weeds out a large portion of judgement proof losers right off the bat.

I say bravo to the camera man.

I am amazed, though, that no seems to be commenting on how fucking bizarre and perverse this attack is - and unique to pit bulls.

There are nutters on there saying bet the dow was abused and any dog will...

How can anyone look at that and not think pittie needs to go extinct?

Miss Margo said...

GRUESOME!

Would it be possible to provide a link to where the video was found at liveleak? I'd like learn more about the video.

Thanks.

In shock and incomprehensible pain, I'd think. And if the attack was prolonged, I think that the dog would have worn the guy out by now. It's a big one. Also--hate to be gross--when you pull away from the dog, you're pulling back on your own flesh...ugh.

OMG - what effed up country did this happen in? Remind me never to go there. In the USA we have HEROS who will step in and actually HELP you. With a gun.

Jake said...

I think it was Brazil - whoever was filming it wasn't doing much to help, but the cops did come and kill the mutant from what I understand.

I've seen a couple other pit videos from Brazil - In one, a cop shot a pit bull that was attacking another dog, and of course everyone know, or should know Justice T Mule, a native practitioner of Brazilian mule Jiu Jitsu.

Jake said...

After watching the video more closely at home, I can understand why the onlookers didn't help the guy out - the way his property was enclosed with iron bars, it would have been difficult for anyone to even get into his yard. He had quite the fortress there - but apparently he didn't realize he was only locking himself in with a deadly creature.

DubV said...

Jake, you deserve an e-card for this one ;)

"of course everyone know, or should know Justice T Mule, a native practitioner of Brazilian mule Jiu Jitsu."

Yeah, old justice was all about the ground and pound, as they say in those circles. If I found myself in Brazil I might consider a small pilgrimage to Justice bearing carrots and other items a mule might need and appreciate.

DubV said...

Does anyone speak spanish or portugese well enough to translate what the guy is saying?

If I didn't have a gun, and couldn't get in there with a huge knife to stick the dog with while it was occupied, I'd at least throw the guy a knife. He seemed kinda of fond of the dog and not wanting to hurt it, or perhaps he was in shock and didn't have the strength.

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

i don't think i could come between an adult pit nutter and their darwin award, they worked too hard for it.

I agree with you on everything, except this one point: because of my Christian worldview, I believe the cameraman (and the others standing by) must do everything possible to help that man.

I do see justice in him being wounded/killed by his bad choice of dog; however, that's not my justice to deliver, and he's still a human being.

Most notably, a more righteous Man than me has died to save less righteous men than that Brazilian.

So, my conscience would compel me to climb that fence and land on the spine of that dog. Get back up and bring my knees down on him. Then stick my fingers in his eyes and pull them out.

When I first saw the headline of this posting, I read 'Lobotomy' -- thought it was a comment on the intelligence of this man.

For those who wonder why the neighbors weren't anxious to help... It seems this pit bull had already attacked several of them. Apparently this man hadn't found that a good reason to put the thing down. So I can well understand them deciding to stand around and watch the owner undergo it himself for a change. Or assuming less eye-for-an-eye motives, simply being afraid to engage with the pit bull again after their first encounter with its gripping jaws.

Meanwhile, re the cameraman... I've often enough saved a dog life from a PB, but I certainly wouldn't risk my own life to save that of a nutter who likely would then keep his undog anyway. And who probably would blame *me* if his beloved pit killed me while I saved his life. You know, shouldna intervened when my wiggle-but was so excited, after all, he was just playing, my own fault I'm dead.

If anyone had despite all this tried to intervene, likely they would've been badly hurt. The first three shots the police fired only triggered this wiggle-butt to finally release the owner's arm and attack his face and neck instead. Can you imagine someone trying to help without a fully loaded gun in their pocket? Can we ask that of each other?

More to the point, can a nutter who is in the process of winning his Darwin award ask that of the rest of us?

Not in my world, but of course that's just my way of seeing things.

Alexandra said...

Sorry, but I can't resist quoting that American icon, Dr Phil: If you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences.

Dr Phil's general message seems to be that it's not a good thing to 'rescue' people from the consequences of their own behavior. He calls that 'enabling'.

So isn't rescuing a pit-nutcase from his/her own pit enabling behavior?

Or is it just me...?

Tegenpitjes said...

Looks like "not screaming" doesn't make much of a difference. Another pit myth bites the dust.

if you feel u need a gripping dog for protection or crime deterrence its good to ask yourself if the risks to innocents or yourself are really worth it. whatever you have in your house is probably not worth somebody being eaten alive by your "hound from hell". get a normal dog as a watch dog , a gun , a machete, an alarm or surveilence system but leave the dangerous dogs for the people with "open" minds.

@Sputnik2009 - What you said made me chuckle. It's just wrong, though, because it places no value on human life. A society that undervalues human life is going to apart. (I'm relating this to abortion and other Darwinism-inspired cultural decay.)

@Jake - Saving a man (or dying trying) is worth more to me than saving myself from being sued. But again, this is a difference of worldviews.

@vintage -- there is some logic there. But I still think it's better to save him and then press criminal charges or otherwise educate/punish him and expose these realities to the world. We don't need to stand by and watch him die in order to expose the crime of owning these dogs.

to help or not to help, that is the question. it CAN be a tough call if you don't know who you are dealing with.

i personally know two people who bought into the propaganda, got pit bulls and then were shocked into reality and quickly kicked pittie to the dirt nap curb. i think there are quite a few of these people.

you also have people who think that their proven dangerous dogs possess the equivalent to human rights. they fight to keep their dogs alive after they bitten others, sometimes severely or have multiple offenses. these people live in my neighborhood and i will be perfectly honest, i wouldn't tear my self away from the camera to call 911 for them because let's face it, a proper mauling is what it will take to get these freaks to do something about their dog, they have PROVEN themselves to me unworthy of my help or life. they are definitively on their own.

and then there are the darla an greg naporas who are in class all by themselves. i hope they are the rare individuals.

typically, it is only after the tragic "accident" that you know what kind of nutter you were dealing with. so, if people want to help, i won't criticize and if people don't want to help, i will understand.

Dawn James, re: your last comment--

One of my best friends and her BF recently adopted what they were told was a 'lab mix' from the pound. They were also told it was a nice dog, maybe a little shy, friendly with dogs and kids.

In fact, it really just might be a "black lab mix." but it sure as hell had some pit bull in it--it's obvious in the head and the chest. It's aggressive towards dogs, they have to keep their cat in the bedroom now, and it BIT a repairman on the hand and broke skin.

After the bite, my friend called the pound and wanted to return the dog, but the pound said that the dog would be put down if returned bc of the bite. My friend felt guilty and is keeping the dog.

They've invested in dog training videos and books and are, responsibly and dutifully, training the hell out of the dog. The dog does tricks for treats now, but it is NOT friendly. Fucking thing walked across the room and growled at me while I was sitting on the sofa talking to my friend, not even looking at it. She was so embarassed.

I am, obviously, very concerned for her. I don't know how to share my concern in a way that will not imply, basically, that the animal is a liability and she is unwise to keep it around. I mean, she's invested a ton of love and effort into the dog, and she's protective of it.

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

the dog has a bite history and continues to behave aggressively so i would place the owners into category number 2. i don't know what to tell you except avoid the dog, even if that means avoiding your friends.

bleeding hearts & aggressive dogs is a bad combination.

Paul, if you cannot argue for the morality of an action/inaction without invoking a divine authority, then you cannot argue for the morality of an action. To do as you are doing is to reduce morality to fiat and it is not convincing.

Anonymous said...

DubV, it's impossible to convincingly defend any ethic at all without invoking a divine authority.

DubV said...

Paul, I'll reply once more and then stop in order not to hijack this blog posting. I can understand why your sentiment is commonly held. People are sometimes taught that something is not immoral unless morality is absolute and objective, and this tends to stick with us. However, absolutes and total objectivity are not necessary. Does this sound silly? "We cannot have a position about the worthiness of action X unless the author of the ENTIRE Universe is somehow involved." All that is necessary is some start premises and a mode of thinking. I'd suggest looking at social contract theories of morality and also the Euthyphro dilemma.

Jake said...

@DubV - I'll say this one thing and leave it at that, so as not to hijack the conversation. I really understand what you're saying, logic and reason should operate just fine in a vacuum. I think Paul comes off a bit strangely, but I understand something of his point. If we're all just meat sculptures moving in the darkness, what is the standard by which we can judge whether anything is good or bad? And by extension, whether we could logically find anything repulsive, or abhorrent - I mean, if we're all just protoplasm doing what protoplasm does, then whatever is, is right - right?

@fourshoes: Good point. This fellow had obviously not previously thought this through. There are three simple things he could have done:
(1) with his free hand, plucked out the eyeballs of the beast;
(2) stood up (early in the process) and planted the weight of his body on the animal. (Repeatedly, if necessary.)
(3) brought the animal's head close and used his free arm to create a headlock for the purpose of choking the windpipe.

There are more of them then any other type of dog, this equals more attacks...simple. But even w/ that in mind, do you know what your actual chances of getting attacked by one of these dogs are? S.K.Y. said...

Happy I could help with the translation.

The dog's attitude is unfathomable, and I've been a dog trainer and behaviorist for years. The tail wagging and general attitude seems as if the dog was just "playing" and the owner's arms were the tug toys. This shows how messed up a breed it is, when the dog keeps on tuggin' on the owner's arms while blood is gushing out and the owner is howling in anguish.

And the 5 bullets thing is par for the course with pit bulls.

I'm preparing to move back to the USA in the next couple months, and am already planning to get a conceal-carry permit solely for pit bull defense if they come after me or my dogs.

I'm trying to figure out if a gun or Tazer will be more effective. A gun seems to eventually work, if you empty every round into the dog. Does anybody have footage or anecdotal evidence if a Tazer is effective against a pit bull attack? Do the police use Tazers for this?

I read on the Tazer website that wildlife biologists are even using them now to immobilize moose and bear when they need to remove an object stuck on the animal's head (such as a can, etc.) To me, that seems like it might be more effective than bullets, though without the long-term satisfaction of giving a dirt nap to a seriously violent animal... (Hopefully, the government will take care of that part after the obligatory quarantine).

DubV said...

Not sure I'd trust what Tazer says as promotions.

There are several handgun aficionados here, so I'm interested in their input.

Why not one first and then add the second later, if that makes you feel better? Carry a gun and taser.

scurrilous amateur blogger said...

the following comments do not refer to NORMAL everyday easy peasy dogs.

i HATE tasers for dogs and here is why.
cop tases rott

sure, the taser saved the cop's ass but now there is dangerous rott in an agitated state running through the neighborhood! can you imagine if that thing crosses paths with your grandmother walking her poodle. THEY SHOULD JUST SHOOT THESE FUCKERS! instead they put others at risk.

same with pepper spray, just pisses them off. years ago when i was in training for one of my jobs, the LE giving the training talked about encountering 2 aggressive rotts. he and his partner emptied their pepper spray (i believe it is stronger than what the public can buy) on the 2 rotts, it only enraged them.

it is a crap shoot with gripping dogs (and rotts). it might work, it might buy you a few seconds to escape and it might not. it might just make the situation worse.

DubV said...

Sharon, there are many other articles where a bullet or two put pitties lights out. You're right though, the ones where they absorb lead like a sponge, leaves one a bit shocked and tends to stick out in the mind. Of course, caliber, bullet construction, and shot placement are paramount here. I would suggest a caliber that you can shoot comfortably. Most people can shoot a mid-size frame 38 special that holds 6 shots relatively well. You can also get 7 and even 8 shot versions now. I wouldn't be afraid of any pit bull with that gun. If you're nervous, carry a speed loader to get another 6 shots in and also a knife for back up.

Miss Margo said...

I concur with DubV. Before I moved to NYC, I had a concealed carry permit (still do, actually, but it's no good in NY). I had a .32 longnose wheelgun and I was very fond of it, but I have to tell you, I think a bigger caliber would be a better bet. I have small hands and could handle the .32 well as it had minimal recoil, but I do not think that it would necessarily stop a big jacked-up guy high on drugs, unless I hit his head or a vital organ. Much less a pit bull.

I agree with Dawn James: pepper spray is useless against dogs and probably against someone who wants to kill you, too.

Re: tasers...not on a dog. And they move so fucking fast!

If you get a gun, practice. Practice practice practice.

The dog was obviously well fed and in great condition. Doggie DNA at it's finest. Also - I don't feel this was an "attack" at all - this was hold on, shake, don't let go".....what other dog attacks like that? Maybe Rotts?

Never underestimate the power of DNA.
