We’ve all heard the platitudes, Pit Bulls are the most loyal!…Pit Bulls were Nanny Dogs! Pit Bulls are highly intelligent! Dogfighters culled man biters!

How does the Humane profession ignore the Bloody Elephant in the room? One must go back to the mid-1980’s when Pit Bull advocacy was in it’s infancy… A decade earlier, the Animal Welfare Act of 1976 had criminalized the trafficking of fighting dogs. Prison-Sodomy avoiding Pit Bull breeders began selling dogs to the public and by the mid -1980’s, the maulings and deaths were skyrocketing. Around 1986, the humane profession set down a course that would make a tobacco lobbyist blush by pushing the “It‘s the owner“ and “unfairness to owners” meme which effectively took the onus off Pit Bull breeders to produce and sell reasonably safe animals.. First, there was the “Are Pit Bulls different?” analysis done by HSUS behaviorists Familiarity with the animal also seems to offer less protection in the case of Pit Bulls. Out of 143 Pit Bull attacks, 19 (13.3%) involved attacks on the owner; out of 135 attacks by other breeds, only 3 (2.2%) involved the owner. Then there was the 1987 “Pit Bull Summit” Veterinary/Animal Control Symposium at Tufts University which produced this slightly important public safety information: Pit Bull Bites are Worse. Later in 1993, The AVMA Professional Liability Trust published this document Do’s and Dont's concerning vicious dogs which was apparently used as a doorstop…

Since the 1987 Pit Bull Summit, 229 Americans have been killed by Pit Bulls and Dog Fighting, Pit Breeding and Pit Bull Advocacy has festered into a Billion dollar a year, codependent-tax free economy in which a host of individuals make their living. Thus far, “The Pit Bull Economy” has not faced liability for the lives. limbs and sea of blood they have cost the public, not mention the costs of housing and euthanizing an estimated 1 Million Pit Bulls annually.

A Pit Bull dog attacked its owner on Sunday night (22), and had to be shot 5 times by the Municipal Guard. The attack occurred at a residence on Wenceslas Braz boulevard, Vila Guaira, a neighborhood near the center of Curitiba [Brazil].

The supervisor of the Municipal Guard of Curitiba, Laurindo Filho Court, said the guards who arrived tried to separate the dog by shooting pepper spray at the pitbull. They hoped this would make the dog release the arm of the retired Dejail Cezar Gonçalves, age 54, but the tactic did not work.

"Realizing that the dog would also attack the head and neck of the owner, we fired two shots, which still did not stop the attack. Finally three more shots were fired into the pitbull, causing him to finally release the arm of the owner."

After losing so much blood, Goncalves was taken seriously ill and injured in both arms to the Worker's Hospital of Curitiba. There was a suspicion that he might have to have his arm amputated, but the hospital said the patient is doing well in the ward and performed a skin graft surgery on Friday (27).

The dog was referred to the Center of Zoonosis of Curitiba still alive, but succumbed to his injuries and died. According to Esther Lim's wife, Gill, the Pit Bull, named Jackal, was 4 years old. He was docile and even licked the feet of her husband.

"We treated that dog like a baby. We love animals. We've lost two mutts, who died of old age. Now we lost the Jackal. My husband never abused any animal. The attack is inexplicable," laments Esther.

Although docile, she confesses that the dog had attacked Gill's brother a few months ago, causing injury. Pollyanna Fernanda Souza, a neighbor of the couple and that appears in the video asking for help from the people who watched and filmed the attack, also recalled the first attack of the Jackal. According to her, the dog advanced on the face of Gill's brother and tore his nose.

The neighbor strongly denies that Gill was violent with the pitbull. "I never saw anyone abusing the Jackal, on the contrary. The dog was very well maintained, fat, vaccinated, fed with a quality diet and loved the owners. It was just love. In fact I did not know he was called Jackal, as Mr. . Cezar always called him "Baby."

The city police officers who arrived reported that they smelled alcohol on the victim, a suspicion denied by Pollyanna. "It only smelled of blood. My sister helped clean the yard after and said it was still smelling of blood."

My organization, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, never said we wanted to be "reasonably sure" the female wasn't involved before returning her to her owner. We wanted to be SURE, and we were following our examination of both dogs and from info given to us by the Medical Examiner and two odontologists who compared dental impressions from the dogs with the victim's bite wounds and conlcuded with no uncertainty that the male dog was involved and the female was not. We saw no signs of abuse or neglect on either dog. The dogs were licensed, they had a regular vets. No neighbors called our organization to complain about them. The female was spayed and the male was not neutered. Contrary to reports, he did not weigh 125 lbs or even close. His listed weight from multiple vet visits was between 68-77 lbs.We don't know what could have triggered an attack like this, but believe there must have been one. We do know that many owners either miss warning signs and behavioral cues or notice signs that their dogs' behaviors are changing and ignore them, figuring the behaviors will work themsleves out or get better over time. We know the opposite to be true...that puzzling/problematic behaviors usually become more pronounced over time if unaddressed and always advise people to seek help from a behaviorist. That said, I want to stress that the owner of these dogs said neither had shown any unusual signs or behaviors. Sad, tragic event!

i guess now we wait for rabies to be ruled out to hopefully satisfy all of nutterdom.
