The Problem with Pit Bull Service Dogs

Sue Manning, long-time pit bull promotor and journalist for AP, has written an article about rescue pit bulls being trained as service dogs.  (YIKES)  She mentions two organizations doing this -  Animal Farm Foundation, the best funded pit bull ownership advocacy organization in the world,  and Pits for Patriots in Chicago.  When we first blogged about Pits for Patriots in 2012, this outfit was less than a year old, and they had not yet placed any pit bulls as service dogs for veterans with  PTSD.  They noted that they started with four candidates, but that two had washed out.  There's a photo below of the two successful training candidates fitted with prong collars.  Today, three years later, they still haven't placed any service dogs with a veteran and the two candidates below both developed a case of the dog aggression for which there is no cure.

They are up for adoption.  The white one, Odie, had to have his CGC and Therapy Dog certificates revoked.  He must go to an experienced pit bull owner who will not "set him up to fail."  FYI: That means potential owners must set up strict containment and movement protocols with zero margin of error allowable or there will be a bloodbath.  And to think he was once a therapy dog.

Pits for Patriots cites as their inspiration two "successful" pit bull service dog organizations, one in New York, and one in Tampa Bay, Florida.

The Tampa Bay organization, called Pit Bulls 4 Patriots, was founded with the intention of training rescued pit bulls as service dogs for veterans with PTSD. Unfortunately, by the time the Chicago Pits for Patriots had cited them as their inspiration, Pit Bulls 4 Patriots had already been forced to abandon their original concept. They retooled and renamed themselves Hounds 4 Heros, a program that uses rescued greyhounds instead. Why? The pit bulls were not working out as service dogs. They took too long to train, and they found that pit bulls were too "sensitive" to work with handlers with PTSD because they "reflected" the symptoms of their handler's PTSD. Evidently, the pit bulls were exhibiting common symptoms of PTSD: anger, irritability, hyper-vigilance, and anxiety whenever their owners did. Irritable pit bull service dogs. N o  T h a n k  Y o u.

In addition, the wonderful pit bull "washouts" could not be easily adopted so the founders of the organization are now the proud owners of a boatload of pits. Rescue pit bulls, it seems, are not inherently (genetically), suited to service dog work.  Unfortunately Hounds 4 Heros not only took down the page the above quote comes from, there is no archive of it either.

However, Hounds 4 Heros has written in depth about just what makes rescued greyhounds such great candidates as service dogs for veterans.  Knowing that they were forced to scrap their original concept, it is not hard to read between the lines.  It seems that greyhounds possess inherent (genetic) characteristics that that make them good PTSD service dogs and pit bulls do not:

"In our search for the "perfect" PTSD service dog, we are very excited to have Murray join us. Greyhounds tend to be calm, loving but not pushy, caring but not overly sensitive, and are happy to relax and go wherever their person needs them to be."

This second quote speaks directly to their experience with pit bulls and they speak to both genetic and a reasonably knowable and appropriate early experience for the greyhounds:
Our dogs are carefully selected for having exceptionally calm and stable temperaments. We like working with greyhounds because we do not have to train over any strong genetically bred instincts and drives (such as protection/guarding, being territorial, herding, dog aggression, or hunting). It was surprising for us to learn that although some greyhounds have a strong prey drive, most do not. While growing to adulthood in preparation for racing, greyhounds remain in daily contact with their litter mates and other hounds. They are spared from the jarring loss of their pack at an exceedingly young age, unlike most other dogs, who are bred and quickly sold as pets. This continued companionship with their own kind is extremely healthy for balanced brain development and canine social skills. Since they are being groomed to become racing dogs, their lives are disciplined, with plenty of exercise, routines, and very clear guidance from all the humans they come in contact with. As a result, they tend to be peacefully submissive to people, and easily accept direction. This is very helpful in their new roles as service dogs for our PTSD veterans.

This next quote perfectly explains the very real dangers of trying to shape dogs bred for fighting into service dogs:
We can't overstate the importance of the balanced minds and good nature of these dogs for their job as psychiatric service dogs. It is critical that our dogs are going to be calm and stable "on their own" without the necessity of great guidance and leadership from their handler. When living with someone who has fluctuating weak energy and leadership skills, such as anyone with a psychiatric disorder, a dog will revert to its genetically bred instincts and/or to default behaviors learned in puppyhood. Skilled training can override weaknesses in temperament and high-drive instinctual behaviors, but our PTSD handlers will not be able to maintain training over the top of these things. The longer the team spends together, the more the dog's training would "unravel" and revert to the genetic predisposition of the dog. Examples of this would be an unbalanced German Shepherd who falls back inappropriately to his instinct to guard and bite when threatened, or a herding dog who neurotically begins nipping at the feet and heels of anything that moves around his person. With the greyhounds their default is to either relax, or quietly withdraw into themselves. As a result, they don't act out, become dangerously unbalanced, or create problems for their handlers or the public. They are able to maintain and return to their trained behaviors with relative ease. These gentle, intelligent, and malleable dogs respond very well to our positive training methods. They are able to perform the many kinds of tasks and work that most benefit people who face the daunting challenge of living with PTSD.

And that is the crucial issue for safety - what instincts (genetically controlled behavior) does the dog default to when not under guidance or under the guidance of someone who is not an expert dog handler.

Animal Farm Foundation is the other pit bull service training dog organization mentioned in Manning's article. They are going at it the right way. They have put out a nationwide call for pit bull service dog candidates that they will evidently transport to the Farm at their own expense. They must figure that by casting an enormous net, they will be able to find one or two pit bull outliers with the temperament of a lab.  But the best news is Animal Farm Foundation now admits that anyone can identify a pit bull, because they will accept any dog that was identified by anyone at a shelter as a pit bull for the program.  They have evidently already placed five pit bull service dogs with handlers, but stopped promoting their feat after blogging about the first three.  The serviceman with PTSD and his dog are not listed as being one of the pit bull service dogs placed by AFF.

Stunt pit bull service dogs are dangerous for the reasons Hounds 4 Heros outlined above.  And Animal Farm Foundation's efforts to promote pit bulls as service dogs and to emphasize that you can train your service dog yourself makes them even more dangerous.

Here is a video of a rottweiler service dog.  The owner/handler/trainer of this dangerous breed dog was billed as South Africa's Dog Whisperer  - a supposedly Ace dog trainer.  The Rottweiler is supposedly his service dog.  Watch the service dog launch a predatory attack on a little girl in a restaurant.

In many respects, pit bull service dogs are silly stunts.  If it takes 4 years to train a dog to be a service animal, one can conclude that dog is not really suited to the job.  This is just like BFAS crowing about a fight bust dog getting a CGC certificate after 6 years of training when normal dogs need only 8 to 10 weeks of basic obedience classes to become a good citizen.  But, even if all of Animal Farm Foundation's pit bulls are truly cream puff pit bull outliers, they are encouraging everyone to pick up a rescue pit bull, train it up themselves, and seat it under the restaurant table next to yours.  Bon Appetit!

BADRAP surrenders to facts

"A lie can run around the world six times while the truth is still trying to put on its pants." ~Mark Twain

on May 20, 2013 @ 9:00 am PST, BADRAP made the following proclamation:
It's Dog Bite Prevention Week. Did you know that there was never such thing as a 'Nanny's Dog'? This term was a recent invention created to describe the myriad of vintage photos of children enjoying their family pit bulls. While the intention behind the term was innocent, using it may mislead parents into being careless with their children around their family dog - A recipe for dog bites!

INNOCENT? the phrase 'Nanny Dog' was never used innocently. it was a very deliberate, very deceptive campaign to manipulate people into accepting a FIGHTING bred dog into the community.

manipulation is never innocent.

BADRAP (or JANE) has employed a talented public relations specialist. they have managed to put a fantastic spin on the reversal of the 'Nanny Dog' myth and back peddled right out of that sticky mess. or so they think. but trying to flush this lie from internet will be a herculean task, similar to trying to remove pee from the pool. the damage is done. this LIE will never be erased and the truth will still be trying to put its pants on long after DONNA'S big announcement has fallen from the top of the page.

flip flopping is nothing new for DONNA REYNOLDS. years ago, she said things like "pit bulls are naturally dog aggressive" and advised people against taking their pit bulldogs to dog parks. now she talks in terms of "individuals" and "dog selective". i think the change happened right around the time BADRAP became JANE BERKEY'S pet project.

let me be perfectly blunt. i'm calling shenanigans on BADRAP. i have a theory. rather than try to explain "the myriad of vintage photos" as DONNA claims, i think the likes of BADRAP, AFF and the utah cult BEST FRIENDS, aggressively sought out vintage photos of pit bulls with kids in an attempt to reinvent the pit bull into something that didn't scare people.

pit zealots like to point the finger of blame to the famous 1987 sports illustrated article for ruining the reputation of their pit bulldogs. but media coverage works both ways. after the famous vick bust of 2007 and the "rehabilitation" of his grippers, pit bulldogs, especially vick pit bulldogs were constantly being paraded in the media. there was a massive surge in all of the myths: nanny dog, it's all how they're raised, ATTS, man biters were culled etc.

trend in DBRF:
2009 - 14 people were killed by pit bulls
2010 - 22 people were killed by pit bulls
2011 - 22 people were killed by pit bulls (DARLA NAPORA)
2012 - 23 people were killed by pit bulls (REBECCA CAREY)
2013 and now in the first 122 days of this year, a whopping 13 people have been killed by pit bulls, 14 if you count the man who was struck by a car while fleeing a rampaging gripper. at the current pace, grippers are on target to claim the lives of 42 americans this year.

a very small sample of pro-pit bulldog media coverage:
12/2008 with the help of JIM GORANT, sports illustrated redeems itself in the eyes of nutters by publishing a sickening pro-pit article (page 2 paragraph 3 references the nanny dog)
09/2010 NPR story about the vick dogs
01/2011 (uploaded to youtube) PBS cashes in on the feel good vick dog action.
many of the vick dogs have their own facebook pages, websites and blogs

2010 lost dogs

miscellaneous crap

2013 jonny justice plush toy

i'm sure that i missed a few.

media blowback
you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the impact that of all of this positive media attention has had on the number of dog bite related fatalities. whether positive or negative, too much media attention on a breed of dog is never a good thing. media hype always appeals to people on the most superficial of levels. too much negative press attracts the thugs & criminals and too much sugar coated press attracts the naive and politically correct fur mommy crowd who think their love supersedes genetics. both of these groups compromise the safety of the rest of us.

slick public relations tricks fueled by a guilty conscience and BADRAP thinks they can back out of this mess with their reputation intact and pretend as if nothing happened. not if i can help it.

"Nanny Dog" was the pit bull breed booth theme at multiple booths at Americas Family Pet Expo in Orange County, CA.
Paid attendance 30,000.

thank you pmic4od!

in search of "innocence"
i briefly surveyed the presence of the nanny dog on the internet. here is a small sampling of nanny dog references. what do you think, are they innocent?

first stop 'in the company of dogs' where you can show the world your pit bull pride with a t-shirt or pillow.

which words jump out at you first?

here's what jumps out at me.
1) babysitter
2) pit bull
3) misunderstood
that's no accident.

GEORGE TAKEI (star trek's sulu) thinks pit bulls get a "bad rap". nutters really hate facts. i posted the link to badrap's big announcement, you know, cuz i'm all about educatin' but this little weasel deleted my comment.

BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY  gets in on the 'nanny dog' action with one of the vick cash cows - HANDSOME DAN.
"When our daughter, Josephine, was born in 2010, we knew Dan would be great with her. We just had no idea how great. When she was a baby, he would sleep next to her crib. Now that she is a little older, he is so calm and patient with her. Sudden movements have always startled Dan, but the craziness of a toddler doesn't seem to bother him at all. Dan can truly be considered a nanny dog!"

JIM GORANT my understanding of his book is that he was personally spoon fed by DONNA and TIM. this pdf sports illustrated article written by GORANT is hosted on NCRC :-)

JAMES SULLIVAN  this fresh faced punk journalist is described as a culture critic.
"In 19th-century England, one dog breed was known as the “nanny dog’’ for its exceptional relationship with children. One probable member of the same breed, writes author Jim Gorant, was a beloved World War I mascot; another was the Little Rascals’ constant companion."

ELIZABETH A BROWN  journalist writing for the christian science monitor.
"If readers are surprised to find an entire book devoted to these dogs, here’s another upset: Our image of pit bulls couldn’t be further from the truth. The Staffordshire bull terriers, from which the American pit bull terrier descends, were known to be so gentle that in the 1800s they were called “nanny dogs,” ideal to be left alone with babies."

JOE WOESTENDIEK  (a pulitzer prize winning journalist - LOL!) the omidog blogger wrote a puff piece about one of JANE SAUL ROTROSEN BERKEY'S literary clients.

BRENT TOELLNER  pit zealot, blogger and marketing/advertising slime ball.

ANDREW ROZSA  psychologist, irresponsible pit bull owner and a very bad neighbor. his comment about the 'nanny dog' is actually comical.
"A Google search of the phrase “nanny dog historical fact” yields 1.5 million hits, much of it “”noise.” However, the vast majority of hits on the top few pages will be supportive of the idea, while the minority who calls us “nutters,”  holds the opinion that this is a myth."
witness proof of assertion in action.

YONAH WARD GROSSMAN  this idiot is just way too confident in his position. he reminds me of another Mark Twain quote, "It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so." GROSSMAN wrote about the nanny dog, not just once but twice. his blog posts went viral.

JOSHUA HOLLAND  this idiot calls himself the truth vigilante.
"For most of the 114 years since the American pitbull terrier was first recognized by the United Kennel Club, the breed was rightly seen as the perfect “nanny dog” for children because of its friendly nature, loyalty and stability. As the ASPCA notes, the pitbulls were “once considered especially non-aggressive to people."
(shame on you alternet, i expect more from you!)

PAMELA KRAMER  "Although pit bulls are still suffering from discrimination, this book will go a long way toward the day when they will no longer carry the stigma of "fighting" dog, but rather the appellation "nanny" dog, once again (as they were known years ago)."

i expect this crap from the examiner. afterall, they provide CINDY MARABITO and PENNY EIMS with a platform to spread their lies and propaganda. but the christian science monitor? boston.com? alternet? c'mon!

PIT BULL RESCUE CENTRAL 'faq' LOL!
They are often referred to as "nanny dogs" because they are excellent with children.

JASON MANN (pitbulllovers.com)
4. Pit Bulls are great with kids. They weren't referred to as the "nanny's dog" for nothing that's for sure.

CELIA SUE HECHT a best friends groupie

COASTAL CANINE MAG fall 2012

IAN DUNBAR you'd be hard pressed to find a more spectacular display of stupidity from a so-called expert. DUNBAR doesn't actually mouth the words NANNY and DOG but his meaning is undeniable as he tells viewers that pit bulls are his first choice for child psych wards because pit bulls don't care if kids pull their tails. ISYN.

SHERIDAN FRENCH
"Below is a great, short article that gives a brief history of Pit Bulls and brings to attention that the breed has become very misunderstood and misrepresented. Please, please read in order to educate yourself on this wonderful dog, a breed that used to be known as the Nanny Dog."
scroll to the bottom for the photo of her toddler hanging on her pit bull while the pit bull is eating two feet from her other dog who also has his face in the food bowl.

KEITH L. KENDRICK a pit bull fanatic in oregon
"So despite being known as the "nanny dog" in the early 1900's, as well as in the United States as a well regarded all purpose family dog good with children, because of such highly distorted journalism Pit Bulls immediately became the top demon dog."

i have pdf copies of all of these (and more) just in case the FTC comes a knockin'.

“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
~John F. Kennedy

so, to recap - BADRAP, i don't believe you and i don't forgive you.

Act five: HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

PINEY the "pit bull".

last december, DIANE JESSUP got wind of the IRA GLASS "pit bull" scandal and sent out an SOS on her pit bull forum to find out where this 7x biter came from.

YES DIANE. I CAN HELP YOU WITH THIS INFO!

please note that STACEY JACOBS-COLEMAN sees absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a seven time biter alive and living in an apartment in NYC.

STACEY JACOBS-COLEMAN?

now why does that name sound so darn familiar?

oh, that's right!

just recently i caught STACEY JACOBS-COLEMAN'S, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of ANIMAL FARM FOUNDATION greasy fingers in the Klonda Richey murder.

no wonder Diane's burning desire to find out this information fizzled out. she certainly doesn't want to alienate Old Money Bags Berkey. you never know when you might need a hand out.

Bloody Money Trail

Last October, a pit bull from the Longmont Humane Society attacked a neighbor and his dog. The investigators discovered that the pit bull had a history of biting both humans and animals and had been declared dangerous in Mesa. The investigators also realized that a disproportionate number of dog bites were from dogs adopted out of LHS.

I decided to look into this further and I found that the humane society was an hour drive north of Denver and Aurora, two cities despised by pit bull zealots for their breed bans. I also discovered that LHS had an interesting benefactor: ANIMAL FARM FOUNDATION.

Between 2009 and 2012, LHS received over $35,000 from the AFF. The AFF paid $50 for every pit bull LHS adopted out and $150 for every pit bull that received a CGC plus there were several large lump sum donations for "adoption incentives".

Click here to read the ANIMAL FARM FOUNDATION'S version of LHS rags to riches story.

AFF 990s can be viewed here and here.

Last Friday, Klonda Richey was killed by her neighbors' gripping dogs when she took out the garbage. It didn't take long for word to leak out that the victim had made numerous complaints to animal control. Dogsbite.org has uploaded all of the complaints against the owners, ANDREW NASON and JULIE CUSTER and AC's pathetic responses. Some of the more chilling complaints, indicate that NASON and CUSTER used their mutants to threaten and intimidate the victim. Klonda Richey was so frightened of the dogs that she sought a protection order with the court. Magistrate KRISTI WUEBBEN refused to grant it.

You can read all of the gory details at dogsbite.org.

The state of Ohio is of special interest to me, so I looked further into the Montgomery County Dog Warden, MARK KUMPF.

His facebook page was a regular pity party, with KUMPF whining about his worst day ever. His friends and coworkers rallied to show their support for the pudgy slug. The entire discussion has since been deleted but I copied it below. It is a sickening display considering a woman who repeatedly asked his department for help and protection is dead because of KUMPF'S lack of action.

Apparently, when the Montgomery County Dog Warden comes a knocking, all you have to do is ignore him and he goes away. Unfortunately the problem doesn't. It's impossible to feel one iota of sympathy for KUMPF'S worst day in his life when you consider the details of Klonda Richey's slow brutal agonizing death.

Back to the pity party.

There were a few familiar names; JEAN KEATING, TAMIRA CI THAYNE, DAISY BALAWEJDER, but one particular supporter of KUMPF is worthy of highlighting.

STACEY JACOBS - COLEMAN is the executive director for the ANIMAL FARM FOUNDATION.

I dug deeper into KUMPF'S facebook page and found a photo of him posing with old money bags herself, JANE SAUL ROTROSEN BERKEY, the grand poobah of the AFF.

It is important to note that KUMPF, along with another Ohio Dog Warden MATT GRANITO, local pit bull activist JEAN KEATING and LEDY VANKAVAGE were instrumental in overturning Ohio's pit bull law in 2012 which has been addressed in depth at Scorched Earth. Both GRANITO and KUMPF are known to have close ties with the Utah Cult and LEDY VANKAVAGE. VANKAVAGE also occupies a seat on the AFF board of directors. And now we see a direct connection between Ohio and the New York Cult. It's a small world.

Been in animal control since August 1989. Today counts as the hardest day I have ever had and the worst case I have responded to in my career. Can't say enough good things about the professionals at the ARC - ACCO's Torbin Peterson, Brian Baker & Kandi Angi Broadus & Dr Kelly Meyer and all the folks who helped work our case today.

  • Christie Montgomery I hope I never have to endure that pain ... I am so sorry you have had to ..... may you find peace and comfort
  • Andie Lloyd You have an awesome crew... and AWESOME one!

  • Joann Hughes Such a tragedy. Thank you for your service. As the mother of a first responder I can tell you that most everyone pauses when a tragedy happens and then they I go right on about their business never thinking what first responders go through day after day. It is the aftermath, the images in their heads of what they experienced and saw that make their jobs so much different than the average person. Sleepless nights, bad dreams etc. The community does appreciate you and some of us empathize and appreciate more because we have a loved one that has survived an event that changed their lives. Take care of yourself and staff.

  • Sharon Harvey So, so sorry, Mark ...
  • Mindy Moore Bacon So sorry this has happened in your community, or anywhere for that matter. I also know that there are few who can manage this crisis better than you.
  • Michael Martin My heart goes out to the victim in this crime. She was taunted and harrassed by these dog owners and appealed to agencies for help for months. And, Mark, you said today that this was unpreventable? Wow...
  • Mark Kumpf Our agency responded to every call we received. We had no legal grounds to take any action beyond issuing warnings as we never witnessed a violation. Our citations cannot be issued on a complaint, we have to see a dog in violation. The criteria for declaring a dog dangerous requires a bite (never bit anyone), killing a dog (never killed another dog), or convicted of 3 at large violations (never cited as neither the ARC or Dayton Police have witnessed them at large). Dogs are personal property and we cannot confiscate them based on a complaint only. With no legal basis to remove the dogs, our agency had no way to prevent this from happening. As noted in my press release this evening, our office never received an identified complaint from Klonda as our calls a(12 of 13) were anonymous. We received no calls from September on. The calls were not all dogs at large either. Several we're for conditions or barking. I agree that this is a terriBle tragedy, I spent the day at the scene with my officers and the Dayton police. We all wish it hadn't happened but in the end, the only people who could have prevented this are the two under investigation by the Dayton police.
  • Tina Kauchak Oh my goodness!!

  • Scott Giacoppo Mark, you and your team are top notch, it's a part of the job we all pray we never have to deal with, the community is lucky to have such trained professionals like yourself. You're in our thoughts, stay strong.

  • Laura Gonzo My thoughts are with you and your team, Mark. Also with friends and family of the victim. It's just awful.

ONE lone voice called KUMPF out. And ONE person agreed. I was compelled to join him.

The comments at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center facebook page are not so warm and fuzzy.
